  • Segment-4 Moe Norman Was My Friend Moe Norman’s Trunk
Moe Norman’s material possessions were kept in his car and the hotel rooms he rented (Canada in the summer - Orlando in the winter). His clothes were hung on a clothes-bar over the backseat. His golf shoes, clubs, balls and articles about his accomplishments and photos of his golf stroke were in the trunk. This segment is about the photos Moe gave me in December of 1992 that were in his trunk.
Here’s Moe at address. Moe played the ball outside his left foot and teed very high. This is the optimum position for launch angle and maximum clubhead speed.
The back of his left hand and the clubface ALWAYS pointed in the same direction. His stance was wider than the width of his shoulders. The arms were fully extended.
He started with the clubhead substantially behind the ball. Moe stated:
    1. I can’t pick the club up
    2. I can’t take it outside
    3. I am already in my right shoulder turn
    4. Which eliminates that much of the backstroke.
Moe started his backstroke by pulling his right elbow straight back; this eliminated body swaying. He would then pick the club upward to the top of his backstroke. Moe’s clubhead did not move on a single plane during his backstroke.
At the top of his stroke, his left arm was parallel to just above parallel to the ground. Moe NEVER took a big backstroke. His right hip moved backwards, but he maintained the same angle of the right leg that he had at address. His wide stance and keeping both feet flat on the ground provided optimum balance!
During the first 0.033 seconds of the downstroke (one TV frame), Moe sat straight down. This forced his left knee to move directly over his left big toe. It is what Moe called “his move”. This motion forces the hands to move backward and downward; another optimum motion.
At waist high in the downstroke:
    1. Moe’s head is over his right knee.
    2. His left knee is over his left big toe.
    3. His back is still angled away from the target.
    4. There is NO spinning of the hips; his body is in a superior support position.
    5. His wide stance provides optimum body balance.
    6. Because Moe’s grip was in the lifeline of his right hand (Single-Axis), the shaft is in line with his right forearm; the optimum position.
From waist high to the position in these photos, the only obvious thing moving is his hands and arms. There is around 10 more degrees of body and hip rotation.
Impact is the major advantage of a Single-Axis grip and why Moe was considered by many to be the best Ball Striker to ever play the game:
    • Moe’s head is still over his right knee.
    • His left knee is still over his left big toe.
    • Both arms are straight and extended.
    • The back of his left hand and clubface point in the same direction.
    • Right palm is pointing in the same direction as the clubface.
    • Both feet are firmly planted on the ground.
    • Moe’s balance is optimum for the human body.
    • Shoulders, hips and knees are very close to parallel to the target line.
These three photos show the same positions as above from the rear view. The majority of tour players over 30 years old have seen Moe Norman hit golf balls. Close to 100% of them were awed by his ball striking ability. I say close to 100% because there are always authority figures around to set your incorrect thinking back to the belief system of the authority figures. Here is a statement by Bob Toski, Quote “Moe’s swing is not fundamentally sound." "He gets away with it because by instinct he played that way when he was young. He has great hand and eye coordination, and he has great hand and arm strength. But he doesn't have the posture of a good player, where the arms look more relaxed and hanging from the body. He has very little bend from his waist. I think he's another Lee Trevino--he's a freak. He learned his golf swing by trial and error. He didn't understand the fundamentals.'' Unquote.
After impact, Moe immediately rotated his right forearm over his left forearm. Moe had a perception that his clubface was square to the target line 20 inches past the ball. This, however, is scientifically not possible. If you place yourself in Moe’s release position and close your eyes, you will experience Moe’s perception that the clubface is still square to the target line.
Notice that Moe’s chin is firmly pressed into his right shoulder. Moe had a short neck. He wore a hole in the right shoulder of his shirts from hitting so many practice ball (around a 1000 a day).
When Moe’s hands were shoulder high in the follow through:
    • Both feet were still firmly on the ground.
    • His Left knee is still bent and over his left big toe; you can only achieve this position with a Single-Axis grip.
    • The shaft of Moe’s club always stayed inside the width of the fairway from the top of his stroke to the finish.
This is a photo of Moe and Lee Trevino at a PGA tournament; most likely the Canadian Open.

You will see most of these photos "used without permission" on all the sites promoting Moe. NONE of them teach Moe's mechanics; they all teach the Tour-Injury-Prone mechanics.

Thanks for the "insider" insights into the best swing ever. I adopted this 5 years ago due to back-pain issues. ( I was going to quit...). I now play over 100 rounds a year (sometimes 36 holes in a day) and have a 6 hdcp on a 6300 yd. course. When I get his motion right, I understand what he meant by the "Feeling of greatness". The result is also great.

Golf is so much fun when you become a good ball striker! My synaptic connections are jumping with joy on virtually every stroke! Glad you are having success!

@@scienceofgolf As I begin my 8th decade, I am glad that my physical form is still able to undertake the activities that I enjoy so much. Considering quitting golf after the layoff from 40 to 57 and then 8 years of retirement golf pain was not my preference. Moe was an eccentric genius and I only wish that I would have been able to thank him for his contribution to my enjoyment. (I actually played a couple of times at Foxwood during my university years so maybe I was in the same vicinity...)

Thank you for uploading these videos and your specific analysis of the golf swing. Did Moe workout for his golf swing ?

Moe routinely hit around 1000 balls a day on the range. His workout was on the range.

I’ve seen he’s saying he never hurt his muscles . Hitting 1000balls every day build his muscles for golf swing . Much makes sense. Thank you so much. I can quit the gym !

Calling Moe a "Freak-of-Nature" is such an insult to such a gentle man and great talent

This seems different then what Todd Graves is teaching.

The money backing Todd Graves is a MARKETING company. They have brainwashed a lot of golfers into believing that Todd is "little Moe" and does and teaches Moe's mechanics. Todd does not have a clue about Moe's mechanics. Graves teaches his version of traditional golf mechanics and makes the claim that they are Moe's mechanics. Every claim he makes is an easily provable LIE! This will be the only replies I will make about Todd Graves. I refuse to spend any time or effort on what everyone can easily see that what he babbles about is not Moe Norman mechanics.
