- Acute kidney injury is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days. It is caused due to low blood pressure, vomiting, loose motions, blood or fluid loss, organ failure, etc. Symptoms are decreased urinary output, swelling due to fluid retention, nausea, fatigue and shortness of breath. Treatment includes medications, dialysis, ureteral stent, fluids, etc.
