My only problem is that ghosts don't work the way they should. At 2:22 Blinky starts circling the top left instead of going towards the top right like he does in the Arcade. It seems they switched Blinky and Pinky's target zones because she starts going to the top right, where Blinky should be. Also not really useful info, but Pac-Man doesn't munch as fast as he does in the arcade game. I've played this so much I noticed his mouth isn't as fast. 1 more thing, the ghosts eyes look huge in these ports Edit: Forgot to mention this, the screens too tall because some pixels seem doubled. It kinda gives the scared ghost sprite a bigger forehead
@@GenXGrownUp Well the only major one. Gameplay is the biggest thing so the screen and other small things don't bug as much, but that audio is legitimately gross. It's way too noticeable
@@GenXGrownUp From a gameplay perspective, that is the only major problem with the ROM. - Ghost scatter targets are flipped on X axis - Frightened/Fleeing ghost do not pause scatter timer, meaning they can reverse in this mode. - Ghosts do now update their directions while in the tunnels, if a reverse is scalled it will not go through until they reach the end of the tunnel which means they get in a strange loop of going back and forth through the tunnel - Audio buffering is nonexistent, but not the worst - Pinky and Inky's starting positions are flipped. This means Pinky takes longer to exit than normal and Inky takes less time, which desyncs it from the actual game. You could go on and on about the differences, but the gameplay itself is pretty solid. Yes the sounds are a big factor. Also 02, the reason Pac-Man's mouth doesn't 'munch' as fast is because the original game uses the exact pixel location to determine what frame it uses. Basically the faster Pac-Man moves from pixel to pixel, the faster he advances through his frames. This one doesn't seem to use that system, but I could be mistaken.

So many Pac Man collectibles available, so much inconsistency! I play it on the Arcade1up countercade which seems to be the arcadeport or at least very close to it
For sure, M00SE. The A1U models are using the arcade ROMs, and as long as they don't have processing problems (I'm looking at you, generation 1 Partycade), they play pretty well. They're in a much higher price bracket, though beyond what I'd call "collectibles" (though I know many people do collect 'em).

@@GenXGrownUp They hadn’t put anything out lately? Huh, hadn’t noticed. But then, a lot of stuff has been slowed down quite a bit lately. Hm, I wonder why. I guess we’ll never know.
Honestly, in my opinion the micro player sounds better than the pocket player just because the pocket player audio sounds really squeaky and loud and high pitched
Wow, that really surprises me. Despite it being a completely different pitch you prefer it to the one that's technically closer to the original? Fascinating!
I really love this video, because this reminds me of the early to mid 2000 plug and plays. The differences between the two to three revisions are stark and I would love to know how they were programmed. Apparently the 2003 version was written in assembly and the 2005/2008 revision was in C? Do you know anything about the hardware in the Jakks Pacific pnps like I grew up? Five year old me could tell the vast changes between the arcade and the plug and plays, but I still enjoyed it.
@@GenXGrownUp A very fair warning; the original 2003 version isn't arcade accurate at all (the sound chip seemed to only produce square waves); in fact, neither of them really hit the mark. In terms of still being fun? They hold up beautifully.
@ 2:29 oh that’s weird, the title screen on my pocket player actually says “pac-man 1980 BNEI” 😮 so even within the pocket players there’s revision differences?
The ghost munching noise is wrong in both of those games, to the point of distraction. However, I'd generally agree that the handheld sounds better than the cabinet. I heard that the handheld is running a custom made Genesis version of Pac-Man... has there been any effort to extract the ROM and port it to the actual system?
I'm pretty sure they're both running on a Genesis core, Jess. I expect the 40th cab just used a different (read: worse) sound chip which was unable to accurately reproduce the sounds required. No ROM extraction efforts done by me.
I think the ROM is probably the same (except for the date text). The units are most likely using two different "One Chip Genesis" ICs as well as different timing crystals, filters, and audio chips...
Not identical (shown by the date revision), but based on observation it's quite likely that the bulk of the functional code is unchanged. As I've discussed with some other commenters, it could just be a different chipset; but to choose a chipset that changes the pitch and timbre as to make it so far off? That's an oof.
I really wonder if this is a software issue. It's almost like they transposed the audio down an octive. It's not like it's the wrong sounds or the wrong music, its just played in the wrong key. The music itself all sounds exactly right, just played at the incorrect pitch. Huh.
Can you review the Space Invaders Basic Fun game? I got it last week at a mall and while it isn't as accurate to the actual Space Invaders, it changes some stuff up like in the asteroids like how in the later levels, the invaders get faster.
