This song was written when they were in their teens and expresses their dissatisfaction with their school system which had focused almost entirely on academics and didn't allow for the pursuit of creativity. Interestingly, in the last few years, Indonesia has been instituting the Kurikulum Merdeka (Freedom Curriculum), that gives teachers the freedom to design quality learning that suits students' needs and environment, replacing the previous, rigid, national curriculum. And, also interestingly, VOB has been given positive mentions by the Indonesian Minister of Education! And you can say Bah - chay- prot or just VOB!
This song was released on National Education Day (HARDIKNAS) in Indonesia. HARDIKNAS was named after Ki Hajar Dewantara, a pioneer figure in Indonesian education, who fought for access to education for ALL Indonesians, not just a privileged few that were chosen by the Dutch colonialists. His view of the ideal teacher was this: Be a model when leading, give inspiration when alongside, and give encouragement from behind. He was imprisoned by the Dutch for his activism, but he lived to see Indonesian independence.
