One of my earliest memories in science was of the Foucault's pendulum in the London Science Museum, it was suspended down the stairwell in the entrance. Sadly no longer there. Many years later after taking a physics class on a visit, and finding it was gone, we set one up in a stair well in the science block.

    To the doubters:
Step 1: sit in office chair
Step 2: make pendulum using a string and weight (or just headphones).
Step 3: sitting still, hold the string end up and drop the weight so it swings freely (it goes back and forth in a plane)
Step 4: repeat step 3 but this time spin yourself in the chair first. When u drop the weight this time, the plane of the pendulum's motion will now rotate (at least it will appear to in the "chair" frame of reference) and the pendulum motion will appear erratic.
This is analogous to the earth-pendulum subject.
Note: if the pendulum motion in Step 4 results the weight hitting u in the face, just know that's physics hitting u in the face.

It will stop eventually, its just very heavy and the air doesn't slow it down fast enough to notice. I imagine there will also be some friction at the top of the cable where it is hanging from.
Now, if you could encase this inside a vacuum chamber, reducing air friction, it will swing much much longer.

It is a question of integrals, in effect. Which level are you looking at determines what factors you measure. The rotation of the Earth on its access? The wobble of the Earth as it orbits the sun? The orbit of the Earth around the sun? The influence of the other bodies within our solar system? The rotation of the solar system around the galactic center? The rotation (presumably) of the galaxy around a universal center, whatever that may be? Seems like each of these could be measured independently as long as you know what motion of pertubation to evaluate.

One question on the North Pole situation. Since the pendulum is hung from a structure connected to earth and initially the structure and pendulum are all rotating with earth, shouldn't the plane of oscillation also rotate and for an observer on earth, it should appear as if the plane of oscillation appear to be static?

    • @johnpurefeeling6258
      @johnpurefeeling6258 Рік тому +2

I would like to say a few words about the pendulum and explain in detail why the pendulum is complete nonsense and obviously cannot work.
First.-When a pendulum, constructed according to the plan of M. Foucault, is allowed to vibrate, its plane of vibration is often variable-not always. The variation when it does occur is not uniform-is not always the same in the same place; nor always the same either in its rate or velocity, or in its direction. It cannot therefore be taken as evidence; for that which is inconstant cannot be used in favor of or against any given proposition. It therefore is not evidence and proves nothing!
Secondly.-If the plane of vibration is observed to change, where is the connection between such change and the supposed motion of the Earth? What principle of reasoning guides the experimenter to the conclusion that it is the Earth which moves underneath the pendulum, and not the pendulum which moves over the Earth? What logical right or necessity forces one conclusion in preference to the other?
Thirdly.-Why was not the peculiar arrangement of the point of suspension of the pendulum specially considered, in regard to its possible influence upon the plane of oscillation? Was it not known, or was it overlooked, or was it, in the climax of theoretical revelry, ignored that a “ball-and-socket” joint is one which facilitates circular motion more readily than any other? and that a pendulum so suspended (as was M. Foucault's), could not, after passing over one arc of vibration, return through the same arc without there being many chances to one that its globular point of suspension would slightly turn or twist in its bed, and therefore give to the return or backward oscillation a slight change of direction? Let the immediate cause of the pendulum's liability to change its plane of vibration be traced; and it will be found not to have the slightest connection with the motion or non-motion of the surface over which it vibrates. I tested it and I would like to invite anyone who is interested to do so. If the earth's rotation were real, the pendulum would swing by itself and would not need a suspension point. In addition, the rotation of the earth in orbit and the speed at which it should fly through nothing are not taken into account either.
Now a few words about the pendulums that are currently in museums all over the world. These have completely different properties because they run with a prepared electronic mechanism. The size and weight of the ball also has an influence. Anyone who is interested should like to look at such a pendulum and read the warning sign in front of it and realize that I am telling the truth. The pendulum proves nothing because it's a sleight of hand!
Finally I would like to add a quote from 1861 from the notes of Prof. Dr. Samuel Birley Rowbotham to show that Leon Foucault was not only a liar but also a thief: "At a recent meeting of the French Academy of sciences, “M. Dehaut sent in a note, stating that M. Foucault ( whose experiments on the pendulum effected a few years ago at the Pantheon, are of European notoriety) is not the first discoverer of the fact that the plane of oscillation of the free pendulum is invariable; but that the honor of the discovery is due to Poinsinet de Sivry, who, in 1782, stated, in a note to his translation of 'Pliny,' that a mariner's compass might be constructed without a magnet, by making a pendulum and setting it in motion in a given direction; because, provided the motion were continually kept up, the pendulum would continue to oscillate in the same direction, no matter by how many points, or how often the ship might happen to change her course.” The cited work dates from 1861 and is called "Zetetic astronomy, Earth not a globe! An experimental inquiry into the true figure of the Earth."
The tricky part is that the plane of vibration has nothing whatever to do with the meridian longitude nor with the Earth’s motion, but followed the plane of the magnetic meridian. That's why you can use it to determine latitudes. But it would be like hanging a compass on a thread and then saying that the earth rotates. Furthermore, the pendulum swings infinitely long thanks to a prepared mechanism. This is a kind of magnet in the ball, which gives the apparatus a push for more momentum every now and then, and a so-called Charron ring, which simply eliminates the variances of the vibration level. You have to imagine this. It's pure scam!

The pendulum measures rotation relative to a frame that is not rotating. This may sound circular, but there is actually a fundamental difference between a rotating and a non-rotating frame. In a rotating frame, for example, you can feel the effects of a centrifugal force, which is absent in a non-rotating frame.

@MilitantPacifist allias tested and repeated his experiment getting the same results in both 1954 and 1959 and published his findings from two different eclipses. Now I'm not saying it's a forgone conclusion, however of the times it has been tested it has shown allias effect more than it hasn't meaning there is at least something to it. Even if it effected 2 out of 6 times (which the numbers are actually closer to the opposite) it means the earth's movement is not the cause of the pendulums movement. A simple loss of momentum and wind resistance will make the pendulum slowly lose its path. If you let the thing keep going eventually it stops, it's not like it's got infinite energy moving in the exact same direction. If you were to swing a pendulum the exact same speed 20 times and didnt record the exact same movement as the earth's movement is constant then it's not being caused by the earth's movement.
This has listed at the bottom times this was repeated, it was observed on numerous occasions, not observed only two times and one put maybe as results.

  • @SnoverDS

I took the liberty of paraphrasing the Professor's question, a bit:
"How does this pendulum, here, on our little spinning planet, going around its sun, going around the Milky Way, etc, know something about the wider universe?"
It doesn't. Like the ratio of pi (or any other constant you care for), it only illustrates the nature of the universe itself. By building the pendulum, we just gave ourselves a tool to see what the universe is doing; what is otherwise too small an effect for us to perceive in our daily lives, but, nonetheless, has been there all along because it's just the way the universe works. Foucault gave us a brilliant way to illustrate the action of the universe.
Maybe that's why these Foucault Pendulum exhibits commands such attention? Because at some instinctive level we know we are seeing something amazing, even if we can't explain why. Watching a ball swing back and forth? Not most people's first idea for something interesting to do. But set one up and watch: most people will stop and observe, at least for a few minutes. Or in my case, hours.

2:30 - Suitably placed Foucault's Pendulum is sensitive to rotation of any gravitational force capable of influencing it. Indeed, the Foucault's Pendulum in this video is responding to the gravitational influence from the Milky Way's center, however since the rotation is over hundreds of millions of earth years, it's seems non-existent, but in reality the pendulum is changing direction on a extremely minutiae level, the length of change is approximated to many fractions of a sub-atomic particle. Or in other words we must remember, BARY-CENTER, is always at play, even at the grandest of scales like galaxies and superclusters!

    • @BenGrem917
      @BenGrem917 3 роки тому +2

It's not responding to gravity, is it? Rather, the Pendulum remains fixed in its plane of inertia. That merely allows us to measure other motions relative to an inertial reference frame.

    • @0LoneTech
      @0LoneTech 2 роки тому +12

It sounds like you're demonstrating a misunderstanding of what the experiment shows.
Firstly, about setting the pendulum swinging. The experiment isn't somehow adding energy to the pendulum; it's about showing the consequences of the energy it already has. At its most active points, the poles, the pendulum would never start on its own, and even where it could, it would simply take too long and be a ridiculously subtle motion. So we do actively add energy by raising the pendulum; for precision we drop it as predictably straight as possible, originally by burning a string that was pulling the pendulum aside. The key is that the swing starts back and forth, straight through the center below the attachment point, not around in an oval.
About air pressure. Yes, the pendulum is affected by air; specifically, air resistance slows its motion. Usually a very heavy and long (thus slow) pendulum is moved to reduce this effect, but it's still enough to stop it in a matter of hours. Air currents would also disturb the experiment, but as it's swinging back and forth, a consistent stream would not change the result. Originally, this was simply a factor unreasonable to eliminate, but today we have a few options.
We could run the pendulum in a low pressure chamber, like the ZARM drop tower. Or we could device a means to add more energy without redirecting the pendulum. The latter is what museum demonstrations will tend to do, so the pendulum is both accessible and visibly operating for each visitor. It's a tricky subject in itself to make the motor not affect the pendulum's direction.
Now, all that said, this is an experiment easy to replicate. You need string, a bob, a tall place (e.g. a spiral staircase with some space in the middle), and a lot of patience. It has been done many times, but doing it yourself is a great way to verify. You might learn something, if only that it's challenging to eliminate variables.

    2) starting the swing parallel to the spin, does not prevent drift, there should be no drift if Coriolis is the cause of drift

So if you put such a pendulum in a house on the north pole, then the earth rotates the house and what you observe is the pendulum swinging in the same position, and everything around it is spinning (just like water in a glass after you spin the glass). Hillary the two things can't really be compared. The pendulum is hanging from a frame that is fixed to the ground and has nothing to do with movement of the atmosphere as it is moving through space with the earth. The only thing it has freedom of is rotation. Because of its free pivot point the pendulum can maintain its plane of motion whilst the hanging frame, the room and the earth rotate. This is not the same as an aeroplane/atmosphere thing. An aeroplane sitting on the ground is travelling over 1000mph along with the earth's surface and the atmosphere above it, as it takes off the aeroplane conserves that 1000+mph momentum in an atmosphere that is also travelling with the earth and has to use thrust to speed up to gain ground over the surface of the earth. We can't actually see the movement of the earth and atmosphere so it appears that the only thing moving is the aeroplane.

eman Since the atmosphere is moving with the Earth's rotation and the plane has the momentum of the Earth's rotation from where it leaves, the only thing that changes is the difference in rotational speed between Alaska and Florida, which causes it to have to change it's flight plan slightly. As it flies south the atmosphere is moving faster along with the Earth, so will increase the planes speed as well. Remember when a plane is flying, it is air speed that matters not ground speed.

Lamborghini Live Not sure why you think it spins too fast? The rate at which the pendulum swings back and forth is determined by the length. The plane that the pendulum is swinging in will gradually change throughout the day. Depending on the latitude that the pendulum is at will determine how long it take for the plane of swing to rotate a complete 360 degrees. At the poles it will take exactly one sidereal day (23 hours 56 minutes and about 4 seconds) to make one rotation. As you get further from the poles it takes longer to make one rotation, until you get to the equator, where it does not rotate at all, but will continue to swing in the same plane.

that's not how it works, the atmosphere also rotates, just like Earth does. Things suspended in the atmosphere also go at the same speed as earth's rotation. If your helicopter went up beyond the atmosphere (if helicopters worked in space), then your logic would work. With a pendulum, it isn't suspended in the atmosphere the way a helicopter would. It rotates because the plane it goes back and forth on stays the same in an absolute kind of sense, regardless of how the earth spins.

This simple explanation really helped me understand this business of the Foucault pendulum , even better than some of the ones I've seen using the impressive graphics . And a most fascinating extension of the concept of the Foucault pendulum to the cosmos is something that I have never considered before , although perhaps I should have , being familiar with Newton's so called ' bucket ' experiment , and the concept of absolute space . But your explanation of how the Foucault pendulum is connected to the pivot , and the difference between how such a pendulum should oscillate and a pendulum in a grandfather's clock greatly helped me understand this . Of course , one must think abstractly , as although the material might be simple in terms of only needing a special pendulum , conceptually it is not simple ... i.e . one must put the thinking cap on ! I like it .

Several questions. If the pendulum's movement is caused by a rotating earth, then can it start from a stationary position on its own? Seems like it should after a matter of time.
Also, what does earth's rotation have to do with the way it swings? Maybe it's just going around on its own path from the certain way the swing started?
Another thought, why doesn't it work at the equator since the earth's supposedly spins 1,000 mph there and that's definitely a movement that would affect a swinging pendulum?

Yes, the Foucault pendulum "proves" that the earth rotates, but that doesn't mean that it's necessarily True that the earth rotates. We have to be honest and not refuse to admit that there are other feasible explanations and that our selection of the rotating/moving earth model is based on certain untestable philosophical assumptions. For example, an alternate explanation is that the earth could be fixed and the entire combined mass of the universe (planets, stars, galaxies, etc) could rotate around the fixed earth approximately every 24 hours. The Foucault pendulum also "proves" this explanation. The only reason to "prefer" the rotating earth is because of philosophical principle of Ockham's razor - which is not without criticism itself. However, I think that what is the "simpler explanation" of Ockham's razor has a lot to do with the opinion of the person evaluating the simplicity. And just because it's a simpler explanation doesn't mean it is necessarily a True explanation.

Why is the Foucault's pendulum experiment a fake?. This is the reason. If the earth was spinning (in reality it's not), then this Faoucault's pendulum experiment would make sense. But let's continue now with our learned knowledge, Airplanes fly from continent to continent, why does it take more or less the same amount of time to fly from Sydney to South Africa as it takes from South Africa to Sydney. The earth rotates at 1600 km/h at the equator, flying from Sydney to South Africa is with the spin and should takes significantly faster than back, which is against the spin. In fact it would be faster to fly with the spin across the glode the other way round than to fly straight to Sydney.
According to the math it should take 4 times faster.
Why is this not happening? Because the earth is not moving/spinning.
You would say, but the planes is moving with the earth and it's relative position with respect the the earth doesn't change.
And I would say, but how can only Foucault's pendulum experience the rotation of the earth and planes which is also suspended in the air not.
The supposed experiment and practice doesn't match up.

When your airplane takes off, it moves ~800 km/h relative to the Earth. So you're actually moving, say, 1800 km/h, the 1000 km/h of the Earth's speed + the 800 km/h relative to the Earth.

The “Coriolis Effect” is often said to cause sinks and toilet bowls in the Northern Hemisphere to drain spinning in one direction while in the Southern Hemisphere causing them to spin the opposite way, thus providing proof of the spinning ball-Earth. Once again, however, just like Foucault’s Pendulums spinning either which way, sinks and toilets in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres do not consistently spin in any one direction! Sinks and toilets in the very same household are often found to spin opposite directions, depending entirely upon the shape of the basin and the angle of the water’s entry, not the supposed rotation of the Earth.
The Coriolis Effect is also said to affect bullet trajectories and weather patterns as well, supposedly causing most storms in the Northern Hemisphere to rotate counter-clockwise, and most storms in the Southern Hemisphere to rotate clockwise, to cause bullets from long range guns to tend towards the right of the target in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere. Again, however, the same problems remain. Not every bullet and not every storm consistently displays the behavior and therefore cannot reasonably be used as proof of anything. What about the precision of the sight aperture, human error, and wind? What about Michelson-Morley-Gale’s proven motion of the aether’s potential effect? Why does the Coriolis Effect affect most storms but not all? If some storms rotate clockwise in the North and counter-clockwise in the South, how do those storms escape the Coriolis force? And if the entire Earth’s spin is uniform, why should the two hemispheres be affected any differently? Coriolis’s Effect and Foucault’s Pendulum are both said to prove the Earth moves beneath our feet, but in reality only prove how easy it can be for wolves in sheep’s clothing to pull the wool over our eyes....dont be fooled folks...its all BS

If Earth diurnal rotation caused the 360 degree uniformed diurnal rotation of pendulums, then there should not exist a stationary pendulum anywhere on earth..

Please look up axial precession. The pole star changes on a cycle of about 26,000 years. 14,000 years ago the pole star was near Vega back then. Also, strictly speaking, if you take a time lapse photo of the pole star today you will see it trace a small circle, very small. You need a telescope for this. Polaris is a trinary star system as there are three stars there, close to 0 RA and 0 Dec. Close .. very close. Please search for Polaris as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope.

Of course, this is assuming that your Foucault Pendulum is in perfect running order, to eliminate any defects of friction or wind resistance that would affect the pendulum's path.
In saying the possible influences, I should have said "partial relative motions" of the earth about its axis, the earth about the sun, the sun about the milky way. In theory each of these relative motions could be calculated and summed together to predict the hypothetical path of the pendulum bob.

Life is2 inertia, if you want to calculate lifespan, you should find where/ how/ what/ which is the source ( the energy) , or force which caused the inertia

To detect rotation, do you start the pendulum perpendicular to the rotation?

You can start it in any direction, as long as you're not on the equator, it will appear to rotate due to it's plane of inertia being fixed, but the Earth rotating under it. It works best at the north or south poles, doesn't work on the equator. You can measure your latitude on the planet by how quickly it appears to rotate. (The pendulum itself doesn't rotate at all, it just appears to. The Earth moves. That's what the Foucault pendulum proved.)

It's interesting that it is connecting to many objects at the same time.

It doesn't! Air resistance (and even the very small resistance in bending the cable where it swings) will slow it down, mostly in the beginning where it moves most. But because it is so heavy compared to the air resistance, it can swing for a looong time, days, for sure.

I understand how a foucault pendulum appears to rotate its plane of swing at the poles but I get lost thinking about why it does so away from the poles.

It's not the pendulum relative to everything else, it is everything else relative to the pendulum that is shifting.
