Have to agree. Coming up 50 years playing guitar, still intermediate at best, can't understand why I can't hear anything except the note Steve wants us to hear. I'm thinking, apart from insane skills, noise gates, compressors who knows what some sort of noise supressor in the signal chain. Not an effects guy. Can anyone help me out?
@@paulstirk4964 He's got a few things going on for sure, but just look at his fretting hand he's able to use his fingers and palm to mute while also using it to play, pretty amazing stuff. Certainly a few pedals in play too, he has a complex effects chain almost always, but effects don't hide mistakes.

I got to attend a Steve Vai concert in Louisville Kentucky two days ago on the evening of Sunday November 13th 2022 and it was a great experience. It was so calm, everyone got along, no trash left on the floor, no one got hurt, nothing was broken, and it leaves you at peace. It's probably at least in part because of Steve's philosophy. I enjoy listening to him speak about life. I got to meet his son Fire at the concert as I was buying Steve Vai merchandise. It was a great experience. I'm looking forward to seeing Steve Vai in concert again.

I have watched this video many times. I just can't get over how nothing can stop this guy from playing at a level that is beyond almost any other guitar player. I have no idea what planet vai came from, but I am pretty sure everyone on that planet plays guitar. :) Beyond his amazing abilities, and control of hammer-ons and pull-offs, this composition is incredible. @@afronprime51 He plays clean enough that constant muting is not necessary, and he does mute them here and there. SERIOUSLY. I am actually moved to near tears for reasons I can't even elucidate. Absolute inspiration, and I am so glad to live in an age where i can see a bit of the kind and generous persona this man has.
One handed Steve Vai is still the best to ever grace the instrument!! I don’t say that lightly either- SOOO MANY greats, BUT, Steve is the master of the masters. And, For The Love Of God will make me cry every time I hear it. God Bless
What kind of trickery is this. No muting pads. Heavy sound gate perhaps? No notes are ringing from the open strings. I love you Vai ! Surgery on his fretting hand for trigger thumb and still does this. Vai, you have an incredible sense of focus and a "can and will do" attitude. Recover your thumb without damaging it. You have nothing more to prove to us. You are a guitar GOD.
A gate would only help if it were active on each string seperately. In this case if any string generates sound exceeding threshold, the gate will open and let all the strings through (since a pickup is mono output, not 6 separate channels for each string). It's a testament to how good his technique is, no trickery needed.
Read the description, he did put a piece of cloth to dampen some noise, and a few parts are edited from other takes. Still, it's an amazing display of skill.
I met Steve Vai in Austin TX at a radio station KLBJ. He was the nicest and most modest person I have ever met. He saw a picture of Stevie Ray Vaughn and said "Wow, Stevie Ray Vaught" I said "yes, but you are Steve Vai". He was friendly, kind even talked to me for about 2 or 3 minutes. One of the nicest people I have ever met. that was in 1996 with Fire Garden as his album. He knew he was one of the best in the world and still he was so NICE, FRIENDLY and MODEST
I’m a multi-genre electric violinist but be warned; I follow the guitar community religiously and the title “maestro” is frequently given to a fella called Yngwie Malmsteen. Lightning fast neoclassical shredder but not a nice man. And his fans basically make excuses for every shit thing he’s said. Even though the evidence here is that Vai can literally play better than him with an arm chopped off. I know it’s just a torn tendon or something, but seriously, the analogy applies here.
@@MusicissuperiorEVHROX316 Out of curiosity I listened to this person play, I don’t know if it is because I just don’t know enough about rock music to appreciate it or he is just kinda… bad? Definitely did not sound musical to me from a classical musician’s point of view, but again, could be just because I am not knowledgeable enough about rock music. But Steve Vai definitely sounded musical to my ears so maybe he is just bad… Edit: also I don’t understand why he is considered “neoclassical.” I was expecting something like Stravinsky when you said “neoclassical” but all I heard was him running up and down scales…
@@zihanwang4078 I think people in rock use the term "neoclassical" incorrectly, for the most part. I am not a classical musician, but I play guitar and listen to classical music regularly. And there is no comparison between Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai. Malmsteen plays notes in succession very fast. Vai is an artist.
His expressiveness just shows his mind is beyond the realm of notes, chords, beats and measures, the music is literally just flowing out of him. Even one-handed, it is a true extension of his mind and soul. You are a genius, and my greatest inspiration to never stop improving. Thank you, Vai!
Always thought it was his guitar technic. It isn't. It's Vai's music that creates these magical sensations within me. Vai is a genius. End of the story.
Steve Vai. 100 times better than my best... WITH ONE HAND! I'd like to joke and say that he inspires me to take up tennis - but nah, he actually inspires me to be more fluid and to enjoy my playing no matter how... errrr... average it is.
I can't wait to see this live. The visuals of what I am imagining him doing with his picking hand while playing this are killing me. Juggling, shadow puppets, sign language lyrics. Brushing his teeth?
I love how Steve has brought the same epic guitar 'faces' from his live playing that we know so well to these intimate pandemic-era clips - it's just an absolute treat, Steve!
That just blew my mind! The best thing about all of this is he's really, really, just enjoy what he's doing. And he most definitely knows what he's doing. Very inspirational. :)
Ever since I first saw you play for Frank, you were 18 (so was I), crew cut mirror aviators and full of 'tude but this will eclipse any previous admiration I have had for your incredible career. Ill just hold my chai latte with my right hand and play with my left.
Now that's just showing off Stevie....Absolutely fantastic,.
Steve is a magician. I hope he will get well soon.
Omg, the mat-black Pia with gold looks magic, and Steve to.
Just when you thing he’s shown us everything, he blows our minds again! Still taking us to school after all these years
If there is a tears of joy, there is also a tears of amazement. The most incrediblle guitar player alive! Thank you Steve.
Dave Grohl: "I broke my ankle but we are going to keep playing!"
Vai: "Hold my pick."
Outstanding!
😂😂
Steve should get together with Rick Allen from Def Leppard.
@@diannehogan7605 You “ain’t” right.
🤣🤣🤣
Appears he’s had recent surgery.
Tendonitis maybe? IDK
Anyone?
Literally, we will be showing this to our grandkids and saying “this is what the GOAT looks like”
Yeah, I did that already. My granddaughter now wants a pink PIA.
Grandkids reply : 'but poppy... the GOAT was Eddie Van Halen'!
I can't see jimi hendrix!
Brilliant. You continue to inspire and amaze.....
so do you Pete
God Bless
A musical genius, a humble person and fortunate to have met him in person on the generation axe tour .... an inspiration to us all.
I don't think there's anyone else more phenomenally productive during this pandemic than Steve vai
Turning difficulty into opportunity. Sounds like the exact definition of a Master. 🙏
Steve Vai: suffers a serious hand injury.
Also Steve Vai:
No seriously, get well soon Steve.
What happened to him?
@@ricardotijerina886 Read the description.
Also Steve Vai: 3:03.
@@noahschenck6715 👍
It seems the older Steve Vai gets, the more immortal he becomes.
I am a classical pianist who doesn’t know anything about rock music, but after hearing this guy, I must now refer to him as “maestro.”
But Steve Vai definitely sounded musical to my ears so maybe he is just bad…
Edit: also I don’t understand why he is considered “neoclassical.” I was expecting something like Stravinsky when you said “neoclassical” but all I heard was him running up and down scales…
@@CycloneJack I have to agree with you on that last point.
Guitarists: I broke my arm, I can't play.
Vai: Hold me a beer.
He doesn't need it. He can hold beer himself, and can play guitar with it.
Hold my cast
Next time he might broke his left arm... and still record new songs...
Hold my LSD......*
His expressiveness just shows his mind is beyond the realm of notes, chords, beats and measures, the music is literally just flowing out of him. Even one-handed, it is a true extension of his mind and soul. You are a genius, and my greatest inspiration to never stop improving. Thank you, Vai!
"So, that covers my left hand warm-up routine."
This performance should be shown to those who say that perfection is not of this world.
Always thought it was his guitar technic. It isn't. It's Vai's music that creates these magical sensations within me. Vai is a genius. End of the story.
Guitar pick factories be like : aight, shut it down boys.
LMAO
lol
Steve, I think you just reached the pinnacle... This is the most inspiring playing I’ve seen in years
Agreed! He pushed his playing even further in the midst of a physical setback. Such an inspiration!
Fixing his hair the whole time. Tender surrender style
We need newer words to describe this man, I´ll never forget the first time I saw Steve Vai in Spain and He always mesmeraze me. Thank you Steve
Unstoppable..thats the power of vai...
It's official, he actually is a guitar. Bravo!!
wishing you health, steve. grateful for your lasting creativity and passion.
Why? What happened?
@@TheDoneroll seems like there is an arm injury
Ever since I first saw you play for Frank, you were 18 (so was I), crew cut mirror aviators and full of 'tude but this will eclipse any previous admiration I have had for your incredible career. Your quote at the end is probably the best quote I ever read in my 60 years on this planet and sums up what life is all about. That's it dude...". You just have to not make any excuses in your head and all your inspirations will be met beautifully."" Yes indeed. God Bless Mr. Vai!
I just LOVE my Steve VAI all the time...
My inspiration 🙏🏼🤗
Same man, Steve vai's the goat
Bang fildan idolaku jg.. 👌👌
😭😭😭😭😭😭
Steve technically could have held his own beer.
Underrated comment! You win
LMAO
Weeell, I can play all of that using only my right hand while holding a beer AND a pick
👍🏾👍🏾😂😂😂
🔥
This is one of those rare treats were an artificial limit placed on a master produces something even more exceptional. Get well soon Steve!
je ne sais pas quoi dire tellement je suis abasourdie devant tant de virtusosité , de simplicité , de puissance et de créativité ...d'humour et de sacralité tout en même temps...UNBELIeVABLE
In a world where so many "virtuoso" guitar players are being left in the dust do to the availability of information from the internet, guitar pro tabs and the rest (time) Steve vai still some how remains relevant to this day, he still stands tall among all the other modern players, it's super impressive
Has more talent in one hand than most guitarists do with two, subtle flex, well played
I am so glad my dad saw you play in Nijmegen before he passed away... after the concert he said to me... i never knew someone could make such beautifull music from a guitar....
This just shows how motivated Steve is he will always find a way
This is a song also call: "no excuse"
I have an excuse: I'm not Steve Vai
@@BlutigeTranen 😅😅 me neither!!!
The pickups and the effects and the guitar quality REALLY help you able to legato and hammer on and pull off like this tho tbh. 18 years playing myself
Called*
This reminds me of "Skyscraper". In 1989, I was in school at BYU and skiing at Solitude and Brighton a lot. I had the new Walkman cassette player with headphones! Imagine getting off the lift with the cold air and the mountain view and hitting play, "I'm a Skyscraper" and into Steve's lead as you cut moguls or speed down the middle of a blue run!
This has so much Zappa in it. And I couldn't be happier about that.
Yeah, I noticed that too..
which album in particular ?
@@DerekHundik Check out the “Läther” album! Or failing that, the Warner Bros. albums “Sleep Dirt” and “Studio Tan”.
And then the entire 3 album “Shut Up ‘n’ Play Yer Guitar” release.
That should get you started....
And that is f***ing right!
This man lives on another plane of existence and somehow transports between dimensions to visit earth. This is the only explanation.
I totally agree.
