I just found your channel a few days ago and I really like the way you discuss books and characterize them. That made a lot of sense and I also agree that this way of recommending books is way more valuable than just saying "this is a great book" hahah. Also, I love your voice!

love this video!! A semi recent booktok book I LOVED was the invisible life of Addie Larue. I think it has a lot of what you love in a book :)

I love how you separated the books in a more in depth critique style! You put so much thought into this and I will definitely keep these in mind when I pick up some of these! Thank you ☺️

I think you’re spot on with all the elements that make these books good! I’m biiiiig in the characters have to be good for me to enjoy department. I would say I usually don’t even enjoy books with great plots that have poorly written characters.
I 100% agree on the miscommunication trope… but for some reason I loved Normal People. I think for me it worked because their miscommunication seemed so realistic-I could perfectly imagine it happening in real life. That made me interested to put myself in the characters shoes and understand each of their perspectives. Compared to books like Ugly Love-which i loathed-their miscommunication not only moves to plot along but it directly relates to their character growth. Miscommunication in books like Ugly Love feel ridiculous 99% of the time, like the author just couldn’t think what to do next. But I also understand why someone might not enjoy Normal People and that’s perfectly okay too!
Loved the video, loved the discourse 👏

the normal people love makes sense to me and i wish i agreed. there was something about ugly love that kept me reading which is so interesting as someone who is a DNFer!!
thank you for watching and your well thought out comment!!

what you said in this vid is so real, anyway normal people is one of my fav books but ifl you have to 1. really be in the mood to read normal people AND 2. connect deeply on a soul level with at least one of the main characters to appreciate what sally rooney is putting down. also i think theres value in some of the booktok books that don't have as much depth or exploration of the human experience, because sometimes that's just what you need especially if you're in a slump and that's what pwmov did for me (definitely my least favourite emily henry though), and sometimes that's why they become popular and are deemed overrated by others, hence the random colleen hoover surge in quarantine when everyones mental states were frazzled. worst booktok recs would probably be the hating game, twisted series, song of achilles (controversial i know) or the spanish love deception, and best booktok recs would be know my name, magnolia parks, seven husbands, invisible life, gideon the ninth, and six of crows

oh my gosh we have differing tastes but this is so valid!!! agreed on normal people, i can totally see the appeal if the characters are relatable in some way. i do agree on the piece about book slumps but as someone who LOVEEED book lovers, i still think PWMOV was just not a great book (for me) because of the characters. not what i’d consider an objectively bad book! just a bad one for me. i do love how fast paced and easy to read coho is even though i don’t think her books are well written at all; i also think there are *better* fast paced options.
i LOVEEED the song of achilles i am SHOCKED! & i haven’t picked up magnolia parks but im thinking about it! & invisible life is high on my TBR!
thank you for watching & for this comment!!! loved hearing your opinions💌💌

i think it mostly came down to the characters & how they did not feel relatable to me personally! i also don’t typically like when miscommunication in character’s relationships is a large part of the storyline

i don’t think i am fully qualified to speak on this & i don’t have a lot of context to your question; but i don’t think it’d be unsafe to assume based on what we know about america’s track record
