Age of myth is amazing! I’m currently reading Age of Legend (#4); I love how he builds the world and myth. The series is long, but the books are short and quick. I love how he writes so many strong female characters, one of the few places the women outnumber the men as main characters.
Yup, GGK has a Tolkien connection, though not to the professor directly. He helped Tolkien’s son Christopher with The Silmarillion. Not sure exactly what his role was, but considering GGK is a fantasy author, and Christopher’s the son of one, I imagine Kay did some of the heavy lifting. Read Tigana aaages ago, and enjoyed it, but I also have the Sarantine books on my list and looking forward to them! 🙂
I'm in the middle of Legends of the First Empire currently and loving it. You won't regret starting Age of Myth. I've been pushing back Stephen Donaldson's Mordant Needs series for far too long. Also need to have my first reads of J.V. Jones. Everyone I know that has read either of her series absolutely loved them.
I almost feel like you are calling me out because so many of these are TBR vets of mine as well 🤣🤣 Though Age of Myth and An Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors are already firm favourites of mine, and I think you will be kicking yourself for putting them off so long when you eventually get to them. Happy reading ;)
Sure, there's lots of stuff I've desired to read since discovering booktube, dozens of series that look interesting and get a lot of talk (any Brandon Sanderson). Or there's the Song of Ice and Fire that I've wanted to read since the show started. But all that pales compared to the veterans from my childhood: Wheel of Time - I read five and determined to wait for the completion before restarting (which happened over a decade ago). Or the Stephan Donaldson/George Macdonald/Anne Mcaffery/Mary Stewart/Kay/etc/etc from my Mom's collection that she's been saying are great since I can remember - stuff booktube doesn't mention often. I read some of her books, and my older brothers books, but I got so lapsed with reading for 2 decades, and so used to the idea of "maybe later", that it can be easier to address these new arrivals, even though I still feel the weight of the veterans in the back of my consciousness. It'll be real good to deal with some of these at last, while that family is still here to discuss it with.
Awesome stuff Tori! Tigana is definitely a TBR veteran for me. I’m hoping to tackle it this year. I DNFd Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors. 😬 I love Mistborn era 2! So much better than era 1 for me. I’m two books in and hooked.
8:50 I love how my mind immediately went to the Beast Slayer 😆I bought it for the same reason, although I have a different edition 😁 (I love both of them but the colors really sold me)
I saw the Hobbit and LOTR animated films as a child. I did not read the books until 2 years ago. They lingered there in the form of advertisements both for the books and RPG's and such. Then of course Jackson's films came out. When I finally read them they were of course very good but did not impact me as they might have had I read them earlier in life. The Hobbit reads like a children's summary book. The LOTR trilogy is all grown up.
Lovely video. Lovely books awaiting your grace to read them :). I've only read one GGK, it was Tigana. Who's telling you to start elsewhere? Who's more trustworthy than me? Ok, everyone. Fair enough. But still, no reason you can't start there. annnnywayss.. 5 warrior angels (I believe) will also give you some ideas for your own writing, I think. He has a unique writing style which I think you'll appreciate as a dark fantasy fan.
GGK doesn't do bad books, all of them are excellent to read (with the exception for me being 'River Of Stars') so go ahead and read Tigana. I am surprised to hear you haven't read The Hobbit or Lord Of The Rings, but I guess that just means you have a real treat coming in May. I hope after The Hobbit it spurs you on to LOTR. Some of my long time TBR books are: The Forgetting Moon - Brian Lee Durfee Blackwing - Ed McDonald Bones Of Faerie - Janni Lee Simner Book Of Night - Holly Black The Stolen Heir - Holly Black
Good to know. Yep, I'm from the generation that grew up on the movies more than the books. I'm looking forward to getting to experience them for the first time!
Love this vid idea and I may steal it! lol on a couple of overlaps, as I also have have Five Warrior Angels, Tigana, Blackwing, and Age of Myth on my shelves for years. It’s interesting what gets in the way of ever picking something up, and it could be for all different reasons. Like for Five Warrior Angels it is just a CHUNKY set of books that you know is gonna require a lot of mental energy to get a handle on the detailed worldbuilding. With Tigana it’s the inertia/trepidation of trying a new author who you know is probably amazing, but actually diving in to test the waters is intimidating. Thankfully I was just pushed into the pool by others as a buddy read got me to try Song for Arbonne, and now there is absolutely nothing getting in my way of more GGK. Blackwing is one of those under the radar fantasy series that doesn’t get talked about much, so it’s never on the top of my mind for what I HAVE TO PICK UP NEXT (currently Long Price Quartet and Dandelion Dynasty are winning that place for their spot in my brain). A slim three-book series though does have a big appeal for the right mood. And Age of Myth is a weird one-I loved Revelations years ago, and I almost feel like I missed my perfect window for reading the prequel stuff when I was in that Sullivan head space.
Absolutely, go get it! There are so many different factors to that, you're right. I'm so jealous that LPQ is up on your soon to read list... I'd love to be able to read it again for the first time.
Lonesome Dove Just keeps getting pushed back for me. I was going to do audio a year or so ago due to its length, but the narrator was bad. So I now have it on my 2025 plan. I know it's crazy to be planning books for next year when it's only march.
My TBR is until 2027. Book that’s the longest time on my TBR is Gardens of the Moon. It has been more than 15 years and it has accumulated so much dust the paper started to damage the book. I am not even touching that part of the bookshelf with the stick at this point. I am convinced if I try to get it it will run away on its own legs. Edit: just found I own Foundation series since like 1999. Never even touched it. Sooo 😂
Probably my most shameful tbr vet is the entire Cosmere. I hope to remedy that this month though as i plan to read The Way of Kings (but will it actually happen this time? 🤭)
Alloy of Law isn't great imo but the next ones are. Shadows of Self is my favourite. Tigana is a tbr veteran for me, but I should try one of the other ones too
I liked The Beast Player but the pacing is weird. Coming of age and I much preferred the child parts (which is common for me.) It had an anime but it was never brought over.
Tigana was okay but I've liked the other four books ive read of his significantly more. GGK is pretty cagey on to what degree he was involved with the Silmarillion, from what i understand.
I personally have two GGK books, Tigana and Song for Arbonne. The first half or so of Tigana, maybe even three-quarters, was some of the best stuff I have ever read, but for me the very end went downhill very quickly. Of every book I've read, it is probably the one I'm most conflicted about. I don't know that you'll share my opinions, but I overall I liked A Song for Arbonne more and actually thought the second half was a little better than the first. I personally feel that Arbonne is a safer place to start; there aren't many reasons not to like it. Calling era one and two of Mistborn the same series is an insult to era one. I appreciate that you don't. Not saying you shouldn't read it, I didn't hate it but its definitely some of his worst stuff. Also... really... how... ?
Era 2 Mistborn is a lot of fun! The first book is the weakest. It’s fun to see how the events of Era 1 shaped society and religion 300 years in the future. Wax and Wayne are great characters but I also really enjoyed the two main female characters too. Steris in particular has a great character arc.
Tigana is the only GGK book I’ve read, and Tigana is the reason I’ve not picked up any other GGK books. Probably a shame. I just didn’t like Tigana at all.
You have beautiful hair today. Also whaaa? You've never read Lord of The Rings?! It's like the benchmark for which we all stand on! In all seriousness, I hope you enjoy it when you get there. This was great.
Thank you, Britton :) I haven't read them yet, but I honestly think I'm at a point in my reading experience where I will be able to appreciate them a lot more than I would've before.
Age of myth is amazing! I’m currently reading Age of Legend (#4); I love how he builds the world and myth. The series is long, but the books are short and quick. I love how he writes so many strong female characters, one of the few places the women outnumber the men as main characters.
I love that it's shorter books, I think I'm going to really enjoy that aspect. I'm excited to get into it, thank you for sharing your experience!
Brian’s series is so dopeee! When you get to it just know you are in for a strapping good time!
I can’t WAIT!!!

Read Tigana aaages ago, and enjoyed it, but I also have the Sarantine books on my list and looking forward to them! 🙂
Ahhhh that makes more sense. I couldn't remember exactly how they were tied together.
Great book list, happy reading to you!! 😊
I am reading two TBR vets at the moment (The Ember Blade and Ninth Rain) and they are amazing! Just shows, as you say, we must give them some love 🙂
Yay! I'm so glad you're enjoying them both! Ember Blade is another one that has been on my TBR for a while.

The Lions of Al Rassan is one of my all-time favorite books. Give it a go before Tiganna

Hi. Loved the video. Don't feel too guilty about not reading The Hobbit at 33, I'm 59 and only just read it! You'll love it for sure.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you loved it. And I'm thrilled to be able to read it on my Hobbit birthday! That will be super special.
wolf of the north has been on my audible wishlist for awhile, and now I might get it later this
If you read it before I do, let me know what you think!
I started with Tigana for GGK. It was a fine place to start!
Woooo, Blackwing!

45 seconds in and I feel so called out right now :D
LOL I felt called out making it. XD
I loved Tigana, didn’t love the others you mentioned as much. I also loved the Fionavar Tapestry, it has a clunky start, but is amazing!
Good to know!
Baudolino by Umberto Eco was on my shelf for 25 years before I read it in December. The receipt was still in the book.
Did you like it?
@@Morfeusm Yeah I liked it and wondered why in the hell I waited so long.
I love that you still had the receipt! And also super cool that it was a good read. Sometimes books wait for the right time to be read.
