The Stones cast him when Brian Jones died, or when Mick Taylor was fired. They don't appreciate his style... Another mistake from Mickey sure... Or maybe from Keith ? No Mickey is a selfish and jealous man !!!😂😂😂😂😂
Guitarists with their own personal style are the best.. I can listen to a handful of notes if it’s a unique player and ID them.. their soul/ feeling / technique comes through- Gilmore, Clapton, Neil, stills, lofgren, jimi, Garcia, Santana, knofler, Terry kath, all different all great.. btw - this lyric is so sad so historically accurate
Hernan Cortes was a Spanish Conquistador who led the unauthorized expedition in search of gold that became the downfall of the Aztec empire in the early 1500's. Also, "Cowgirl in the sand" for another extended guitar solo from Young.
Neil Young is The MAN. And ZUMA is one of his greatest albums. And "Cortez The Killer" is probably the greatest song on the album, a real story of greed and corruption and outright genocide.
The main thing I love about Neil is he gives zero fucks about polish and perfection or what others think of his style, he plays from the soul, mistakes are opportunities, and the result is the result. You dig it or you don't, life rolls on.
Hernando Cortez was a real historic character, as was Montezuma, who was the leader of the Aztecs. Cortez was a Conquistador who came into what is now Mexico looking for Gold and other treasures for the Spanish King who sponsored his multi ship expedition. It did not end well for the Aztecs. 500 Spaniards wound up killing thousands and thousands of Aztecs with weapons and disease. Neil knew a story that needed to be told when he saw it.
The Cortez expedition was not sponsored by Spanish authorities. Cortez took it on himself and set out from Cuba. The governor of Cuba sent an expedition after him to apprehend him, but he managed to convince the people who had come to arrest him to join him instead.
The live version of "Cortez the Killer" recorded during the Ragged Glory tour and released on his 1991 album, Weld, rocks on for another two and a half minutes. We cranked that album all the time back in the nineties.
Based upon this reaction, which I enjoyed a lot by the way, you've definitely got to listen to these two songs, Down By the River, and, Cowgirl In The Sand. You really should brush up on Crazy Horse. Most of his output was with Crazy Horse, at least the famous stuff for the most part with some really amazing later solo work like this, and this went on for years and many albums but it was so good. I saw them live a couple times and both times were different but really really good. Also check out the song Powderfinger, it is set in Civil War times but it is so powerful and it captures so much truth and emotion.
As mentioned, the song is about Hernan Cortez and his destruction of the Aztecs. What is not often realized is that when Cortez was "encouraged" to come back home to Spain by King Ferdinand who feared that Cortez was becoming too powerful, he left behind his Aztec wife and their two small children. Thinking that she would be going with him and finding that he had abandoned them, she took her two sons to a nearby river and drowned them. Then realizing what she had done in her anger, she began to weep and scream. The Spanish word for "cry" as I recall is "lorrer" (yo-rehr). She is the source of the stories about the evil spirit known in Mexican lore as "la Lorrona" who haunts waterways and moans and cries and according to legend, drowns "kids who should be at home at night". And the last four words of the song, "Cortez, what a killer..." give a more realistic view of the reality and true history of the tragedy of the Cortez expedition. I perform the song at most of my solo gigs and it's a favorite. You do great things, Biz, and I mean it.
You’ve checked out some epic Neil Young songs and I’ve enjoyed enjoying them with you. But your Neil Young journey won’t be complete until you’ve listened to Cowgirl in the Sand. That song was a revelation for me when I first heard it and it likely will be for you too. Still one of the coolest songs of all time.
Thank you so much, Big Soul Biz; I appreciate you playing this tremendous old Neil Young song. You'd love the song 'Like A Hurricane, too. We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude; know that the fun, laughs, and enjoyment you bring with your hard work are greatly appreciated by your subscribers. We saw him in Sydney in the 8’s, Neil asked the audience what they wanted him to play at one spot, my husband yelled out Cortez and bang Neil obliged ❤, it was truly a brilliant concert, one of the best I’ve seen
I was always really partial to Rust Never Sleeps. He's a freakin tone MONSTER!If you like this you'll like more. After watching all your vid,I should certainly have added that he's also a killer lyricist.
You can find an amazing version of this from FarmAid 2018 in Hartford Ct, at the Xfinity Theatre on You Tube. Lukas Nelson (Willie’s son) and his band were Neil’s backup band that night. The whole set is worth watching.
@@blindriv3r Lyrically more the whole album but musically this song stands out as a turning point along with Danger Bird. This was a nice story and wasn’t cinnamon girl but it’s the music that transports. Here a bit on how Lou Reed found Danger Bird… Lou Reed considered the guitar playing on "Danger Bird" to be the best he had ever heard, stating "It makes me cry, it is the best I have heard in my life. The guy is a spectacular guitarist, those melodies are so marvelous, so calculated, constructed note to note… he must have killed to get those notes. It puts my hairs on end!
I‘ve seen him five times: loud, electric sets full of feedback, acoustic sets, a country set, ….. Whatever his last album is, that’s what he plays, and he adds older songs in that style. Crazy Horse is his band for the last 50 years that he gets together every few years only when the spirit comes to him. He says you can’t force it. “Don’t spook the Horse.” He gets other bands together for other times: The Blue Notes, Stray Gators, Shocking Pinks, International Harvesters, Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, … Most of his records are done in one take, maybe two… “Cinnamon Girl”, “Love To Burn” are electric, “Harvest”, “Helpless” are acoustic, “Out On the Weekend” and “Powderfinger”, which he plays every time along with “Needle and the Damage Done”, are a mix of acoustic and electric. Thanks!
Neil wrote this while in high school...he has a knack for displaying emotion through the guitar. He may not be technically polished, but his playing checks my boxes!
“let’s keep it simple, just feel it and flow with me”. Neil turned his barn into his recording studio, big open space and natural sound bouncing around off the round log surfaces.
Whole album is a masterpiece that must be heard. Lou Reed called the guitar in Danger Bird one the most beautiful he'd ever heard. You need to hear the entire Weld live album also where Cortez has another energy that levels up to the album version, with an added blood curdling outro/solo added.
Great song, good reaction. Thanks. From the same album you should listen to Danger Bird from the same album. Another beautiful song from Neil is Alburquerque. I am almost sure you will love it.
Young has a very brilliant guitar style, but it's also a bit undisciplined, so his guitar work isn't as respected as it should be. For a great Young guitar experience, listen to Country Home, the opening track on his excellent 'Ragged Glory' album. In fact, RG is a great listen, from first to last. Please review Powderfinger, one of Young's very best songs, as a guitarist, and as a lyric writer.
The funny thingz after all of that playing and the story if the Aztecs, what's really on his mind comes out in the kast verse..."i know shes kiving there and she loves me to this day. I still cant remember wjen or how i lost my way.". I think it was one of his fever dream type of songs, like Cowgirl iin the Sand and Down By the River.
Exactly, I think this is the one he said he wrote after 'too many cheeseburgers' lol...for sure it was after learning of the story in High School, so written as a teenager, amazing..
The song that got this album banned in Spain lol - no-one rocks like uncle Neil, especially when he's riding with Crazy Horse. Brilliant choice, great reaction.
@@dansernerkhi8995 Yep, cuz General Franco considered Cortez a national hero - but it was right at the end of Franco's regime, so the ban was only in place for something like a month until he was overthrown
I just said this on another post of this song, so no hate, just thought it worth saying here too. I usually do not like covers of iconic songs, it is so difficult to do them justice, I grew up listening to Neil Young and consider him one of the pioneers of the music I love. His guitar playing is not perfect, and that's the beauty of it. It screams, it stutters, it has pain and effort. It's human.
