Awesome video shows the struggle of switching patterns

Learned on a 3 lever case backhoe w/ foot swing, ran that for a couple years, then worked for a company for 10+ years that only had machines with excavator control.
Switched companies and had to learn backhoe controls and have been running backhoe for the last 10 years. Occasionally have to jump on a machine that is being ran in excavator controls. It definitely hurts my brain to try and switch back and forth.
Worked with a guy that had to have a backhoe in backhoe controls, and any track machine had to be in excavator controls.
He could jump between machines all day and not miss a beat. It was pretty cool to watch.

It's really strange that some folks can learn and retain both and some it's like learning to walk again during a switch. I'm in the latter category.

    It’s 100% personal preference.

I think the performance or “flat bottom ditch” capability is how the machine is made. For example, I have a backhoe attachment for my skidsteer. It has a float valve for the boom. So when I switched the hoses over, the float when to the dipper.
There has to be a priority for which valve gets the fluid. Where it’s going to take more fluid pressure to run the boom versus the dipper. I probably just dug my self a big hole. So we’ll see where it goes from here

A few years ago I bought a little Kubota backhoe. It broke my brain trying to re-learn those controls.

It's really hard to switch your mind vs the controls. Never thought about if you learn normal excavator controls that most of the smaller backhoes don't have a way to switch. My Massey didn't but every excavator I've been in had both.

Love the video somethings come natural to some people and some things don't.I tried to play drums in school never again lol. I find with these machines if rest your forearm on the hand rest and only use your wrist to Control you'll find it easier.. All the best JV from Australia

I was forced to run a 270 excavator in backhoe control digging a hole with tight clearance. Took me about twice as long as it should have. It might have been faster to have changed to pilot control lines. I would have but it wasn’t my machine

It takes me about 2 hours to switch to excavator controls, and I still can’t do it at the speed of backhoe. But it takes me no time at all to switch from excavator to backhoe. I’m just glad the machines my current company has have switches. I’m the only guy that uses backhoe, and everyone hates when I hop out cuz they look like an idiot for about 15 seconds.

tried all day on a big 30 tonner to do excavator controls .its hard isn't it-i have 30 years of pile management experience, fulltime backhoe controls, just went on a site with excavators that couldn't be changed easily-feel for these guys who get dimentia ,figured I had a decent taste of it that day.have you come across any other techniques to help out.Bev.

I used to be able to swap my brain over faster then it took to swap pilot lines on a machine without a pattern changer. Haven't had to in a while so might be rusty.

I haven't been able to learn both. I always give up. Lucky that most backhoes are fixed on backhoe and most excavators do both.

I learned and know Cat pattern (track hoe) and I've tried to run Deere pattern (rubber tire hoe) and I caint teach myself to operate Deere pattern, runnin Deere I am a hazard to everybody and everything within reach. If it aint got a pattern changer its just best I stay off of it

It is definitely worse than learning from scratch because you brain picks up habits (muscle memory) where your brain goes into autopilot. So your consciously trying to BA, but your subconscious tells you body to do AB. If you've never done AB nor BA, you wouldn't have to fight your subconscious.

It's a weird feeling trying to unlearn/learn something.
