Happy 404 day friends! The SP is such a versatile machine, but I’m often asked if its best for live performances/fx, so today we’re talking 5 ways to make beats with the SP.
Roland released a 4.0 update the day of this video's release adding some amazing stuff like live looping! I'll have a video on the new features in a few weeks (dealing with a newborn takes most of my time) so stay tuned and thanks for watching :)

Only got my 404 in January and I've been looking how to use the BUS to adjust parts individually and boom there it is right st the start. Thanks 😂
I like resampling, lots of copies before i do the next part so i have a backup and options for variations.
Cheers, glad it helped! Resampling is the best, I love seeing how far I can take a sound with fx, pitch shifting etc. Hope you've been digging the 404 :)
Excellent video on an amazing beat making sampler effects sequencer. I'm old now and sure wish I knew about the 404 when I was younger. This thing is super fun (404 Mk2). Having said that - STEEP learning curve.
Now to your video - very well done. Only wish is that you'd go slower. I''m old so i know it's me but the info is just flying by. I do appreciate your effort and will just stop and rewind a bunch to catch it all.
Appreciate it! The SP is a great piece of gear and while the curve can be tough, once it clicks it's definitely worth it for it's versatility. I've got a lot of tutorials in an SP playlist on the channel if you want to see more of how I use it :)
@@sunwarper thank you - I will definitely be watching all of your post for sure.
just a UA-cam hint.. you can slow down the video in settings.
nicey nice
Cheers!
Seriously the steepest learning curve of any of the modern grooveboxes and samplers, but rewarding. I have more fun on Electribes and MPCs but it has crazy depth. Starting to vibe on the Mc 101, thinking they might work together nice.
The Octatrack is personaly harder to tame!
Not really had it for a day and I’m cooking just watch tuts and follow along u will def start too catch on jus time that’s all
I found the Digitakt a bit harder to approach/learn, but similarly once it all clicks it's a great piece of gear. What I really appreciate in the SP is it can basically do everything (especially after the 4.0 update) from sampling, fx, to even amp sim and being an audio interface.
I'm actually having a hard time getting a workflow with this thing... I feel like I'm doing all these little parts and not using them in a cohesive way.. then I end up changing colors of pads and scratching my head.
@@totalSLACK yeah bro, feel ya. It gets easier but it's not easy
Amazing video thank you
Cheers 😄
@@sunwarper I had a question, Whenever I use the method in the last example whenever I sample it into my daw the sounds sound very quiet am I doing something wrong? The sound from the sp sounds perfect though
Have you checked your input settings & volume? You can change the volume and add an input effect like 303 sim etc by hitting shift + ext source
Lmk if that helps
I’m on Logic and want a SP. They look like they complement each other nicely. Have you used SP as a plug-in? Also would be nice to break free of the computer sometimes.
Yeah they work really well together with USB-C. The SP404 "plug in" doesnt work as a normal vst, it's just a data manager etc, but if you use usb-c you can create a routing that enables using the SP's effects on tracks in the DAW. That's the setup I used in this video at 15:40 and on.
What's nice is you can use that plugin to transfer samples, one shots or even tracks into the SP and then use the SP away from the DAW!
How the easiest way to do or record live set up on the android phone? For making content on IG or TIKTOK? Do I need external equipment?
I'm not really familiar with android, but if you have some sort of daw app (like garageband in iOS) or Koala, you should be able to send sound through USB- C cable.
I keep going back and forth about buying one. I bought an MpC and coming from a Daw, the least curve was too great. I sold it in a week. I’m scared. 😪
The learning curve on the SP is pretty steep as well to be honest
You tried the KO2?
The SP takes some time to get the hang of, and it’s a very different workflow coming from a DAW… but once it clicks it’s a great piece of gear for making music or even at the end of a signal chain to add FX. If you’re thinking of staying working with the DAW, the last method I covered is a great way to incorporate the SP into that workflow as well.
It’s definitely an investment so if you didn’t vibe with the MPC (which is a little closer to a DAW) I’d say watch some more videos on the SP and see what you think.
I have a playlist of tutorials and beatmaking here if you want to see more from me:

@@sunwarper Thanks. That’s what I’m afraid of. I’ve watched a bunch of videos and the menu diving and button combos are off putting. I don’t want to invest $400-$500 just for a “fx machine.”
@@ManCalledMif No. I’ve watched a few videos.
Not being able to move notes or see it quantize visually is my main peve about this machine
Tbh that’s probably one of the best things about it, takes us as far as possible Tom being just another daw in a box like mpc!
It would be nice, though I'm not sure if that new microscope in the 4.04 solves that at all, I'm still looking into everything they added and keep getting distracted with the sound generator and looper.
User IT with koala an use piano Roll.
You can use it with a daw?? But I feel like the main point of it is to get aways from the machine like feel of things like quantize etc.
Dude. Nice 4/4 drop, but Roland beat you to the punch!
Haha I figured they were cooking up something special. I’ll be covering all the additions over the next few weeks (life is moving a little slower with the newborn)
Could you make a vid on the new looper mode
Its currently in edit and dropping this Thursday at 9am pacific :)
