Are Mijello Mission Gold Watercolors Too Bright For Landscapes?

- I have had a few people tell me, not only in the comment section of my last video but also before that, that Mijello Mission Gold Watercolors are too bright. Especially when it comes to painting landscapes.
In this video I wanted to put that to the test by painting the same painting twice. First with my usual Rembrandt Watercolors and then with my Mijello Mission Gold Watercolors.
Will the Mijello paints prove to be too bright? Or is it a simple case of neutralising them while mixing?

Anyone who thinks any paint is too bright needs to re-think. You can always dull down a bright color but you can never brighten a dull color. People just need to learn how to mix.

It's easy enough to neutralize bright colors and you've done an excellent job. An overly bright landscape could be kind of fun actually. Love your paintings.
I think being too bright for a paint is an advantage though. I think muting the "too bright" colors is the solution. That's why I think artist should know the color theory. Just my opinion 🙂. Have a nice day and keep safe!
I agree that colors being bright can be an advantage. You can always mute down the bright colours but you can't really make muted colors bright. And yes I also agree that basic color theory is important.
Btw what brush/es is/are your favorite?
I use Escoda Synthetic brushes mainly. Ultimo/Versatil/Perla.

@@dheyyy_dheyyy Definitely synthetic. They are getting so good now I don't see the need to spend more on natural hair. Others may disagree though.
I actually do see a big difference - the Mjello colors are more vibrant, especially the tree, and more transparent. The painting looks subtly more colorful and luminous, and personally, I like that. You have a more interesting sky with the pink bits. You also did a better job on the tree's shadow (not because of the paints obviously) and for that reason I like the Mjello one better! But I love bright, saturated colors. This was a really great video; it makes me want to try this exercise myself.
It was fun to do the comparison. I might make that into a series. Paint the same painting with 2 different brands and see how they compare.
yeah i really dig the tree shadow on the mijello one too. i think it's subjective, which painting looks "better" as predominantly the color intensity and scheme will be what most people judge their favorite on. i'm personally a fan of muted colors AND bright colors. so i like both for different reasons. : ) really liked the mijello tree when it was still that light green.

Based on your review and painting, I think it's still okay to use it for landscape. But it depends on the artist itself. Yes you can just neutralize it with blue or green! I still do it even with the toned down paints that I usually use for landscape paintings, but I tend to mix it with yellow or green (idk, I found it way more neutral with yellow added). But still, I prefer not to use bright paint for my landscape cuz it's a lil bit scary and I need to work on it more than with my other paint 😂

The mijello is a nicer bright. I liked it better than the duller pallet. The little scene was nice. I shall try something similar. It felt like a nice little class that I attended. Thank you. Karen from Canada

Well done, pigments are pigments and one really does need to expand their ability to create dupes in Mijello to desaturate the colors which are easy to do. I think you proved a great point. Some brands actually make their earth colors by mixing non earth tones. I enjoy using the real earth tones myself but your paintings looked identical.

I would say here you are not comparing two brands, but rather drastically different pigment choices. And both work. Once I painted a landscape with a primary trio (phthalo blue, alizarin hue, benzimidazolone yellow), and it ended up very neutral and subtle, although I struggled with phthalo blue that I usually avoid, and having no granulation whatsoever, so that I had to paint textures manually. Bright colors are good;)
One of my favourite painters, David Taylor, once said, "It's always easy to make a bright color dull, but it's very difficult to make a dull color bright".
I love my Mijello Mission Gold paints for all types of paintings, including landscapes

I think there's a difference in the paintings. Mijello seems more luminous and the greens are nicer compared to the rembrandt colours.
though tbh I'D rather have a palette with too bright colours than one that has fairly muted tones. Mainly because you can always dull down colours but making a dull colour more vibrant is pretty much impossible. it gives you more options. though for when I know already what coloursd I need I like to take a mix of both.
I do like to have a more muted ochre for example because it'S very versatile, but I need my orange red colour for emotional support. it's not fun painting if there's no bright red I could choose if I need it. I also love indian red, because of the opaqueness but it's much more fun for me if I have an intense, transparent blue to play against.
I use mijello since last year. It is the best deal watercolor artist grade I can find -till now. I use it for my urban sketching and I think the color are just fine. They are beautiful 😍

Looks to me like Mijello is much nicer. The Rembrandt are a bit dull. Mijello uses phthalos in their mixes so you do need to calm the down a bit. But they are also luminous and pretty.
You definitely do need to mute the Mijello colors when painting. Unless the brightness is what you are looking for.
I wouldn't say the Rembrandt colors are dull. It's more that I didn't really finish the Rembrandt painting. I hadn't painted the darks in so it lacks a bit of contrast. Thank you for your comment 🙏
On your first show of the two paintings side by side the Rembrandt one did look washed out on comparison to the mijellos, but I think that if you used the more staining colours from Rembrandt (like phtalos and quins) you'd get the same result....
I'd say the Rembrandt one looks a bit washed out because I didn't really finish it. I didn't paint in the final round of darks so it lacks a bit of contrast when compared to the Mijello. I do prefer the Rembrandt colors though. Thank you for watching and commenting 🙏

i like the mission gold one. though, the muted tones on the other are nice especially if you are going for more of a winter or cool day.
I like the handy little Majelly palette box. Just wondering if you found it a bit constraining with the small mixing spaces ?.. Though I suppise the Frank Herring one is more practical.
I like the Mijello palette too. The mixing area is not very big but I only really paint 5"x7" postcard size when I'm using it.
The mixing area in the Frank Herring palette is much better.
i think this goes to show it’s not the paints but the skills of the painter. if i did this exercise, the mijello might come out obviously brighter. 😅

I use my Mijello set for landscapes and seascapes. I think I also painted a sunset. But they are comparable with the paintings I painted with all the other paints that I have on my main palette. You just have to know how to these colors mix. The premade Mijello sets have quite a lot of multi-pigment colors.
Yes I agree. It's all about learning the colors and what to do with them.
I don't mind the multi pigment colors. As long as you know what is in them then you know how to handle them.
@@JayNathanWatercolor I just think it could be more difficult if you have a colors from different color families like red, green and maybe a blue. These could get in your way a little.
Mijello gold make for mixing color when painting, color rick pigment but hard to control Intensity, cheaper if comparison to artist brand but it just semi-artist brand , more color Staining, good for try
Which set had a better mixing area ? The Rembrandt or the mijello? The mijello looked like you were mixing on a ceramic palette as it looked like it wasn’t shrinking or beading up at all!
Both were mixed on plastic so we're pretty much the same to me. The Mijello palette has clear plastic inserts on top of the white mixing areas. I don't know if they are supposed to be removed but I just leave them in and mix on top. It's easier to take them out and clean them and I don't have to worry about staining.
Funny that I actually read somewhere that Rembrandt watercolors are too vivid because they add brighteners :D so, what then the Mijello adds? I liked both paintings. I don't see any negative aspect to watercolor being intense in color. Neutralizing is always an option. Or just buy from another brand or an artisan, the market of watercolors is saturated and diverse.
I've heard that about Van Gogh but never about Rembrandt. Though these days I wouldn't be surprised about anything any manufacturer puts in their paints and doesn't tell us about.
Yes I think paints being intense is a good thing on the whole. You can always mute a bright paint down. Can't really go the other way.
We are very lucky these days with the amount of great watercolors available to us.
When people say paints are too bright, I think what they mean is that the mijello line lacks good earth tonnes. :(
I don't mind bright colors in a painting. I personally haven't used the Mijello Mission Gold. But I loe QOR.
I definitely want to try QOR sometime. I just wish they weren't so expensive 😞
@@JayNathanWatercolor -- Jay, I don't think they are that expensive. I saw on Amazon that a Rembrant 24 set of half pans in a metal case goes for $110.00. I got the set of 12 QOR tubes for under $50.00 and then picked up the chroma set of six for $26. So, not bad? I don't know where you are located, though. That is the Amazon US price. The QOR are great for backgrounds because of the way they move. It is amazing. But, other than QOR and some very small tubes of DS, I use Paul Rubens and Van Gogh. I think your Mission Gold paints are probably considered higher quality, but I love both Paul Rubens and QOR. This is the first video of yours I watched. I like trying landscapes so I am subscribing to see more from you. Thanks so much!

I think watercolor prices can vary quite a lot depending on what part of the world you are in. Rembrandt and Mijello are very cheap here in Thailand. I can get a 20ml tube of Rembrandt Cobalt Blue (the most expensive color I use) for $9.20. The easiest way to get QOR is shipped from Jackson's where an 11ml tube of Cobalt Blue costs around $19.25.
I love Paul Rubens and Van Gogh Watercolors. I've used them a lot in the past.
I have the mijello and the only complain I have is the movement, they are very static for my personal taste.
Yes they don't move all that much. That is a common feature that all Asian watercolor brands seem to share.
If you want paints that have more movement it's probably better to go for one of the ox gall containing brands like W&N or Schmincke. Or if you don't want the ox gall then I've heard that QOR move around like crazy.
