    It's time for a tow vehicle upgrade here at the BTR Garage. The old 2010 Ford F150 was not cutting it when we upgraded to the enclosed trailer. So, I "upgraded" to a 2002 Ford F250 with the 7.3L V8 Powerstroke Diesel engine. This thing is a beast and will be getting some upgrades of its own in the near future!

    Just bought my 1999 F-350 XLT 2 weeks ago with only 142K on the odometer. No rust on it whatsoever and she rides like a dream. I work on these old girls for a living so it made sense for me to buy one so i can repair anything on them. Simple and easy to maintain, i have no complaints about these trucks.

    Biggest tip if your gunna be hauling heavy loads, let your turbo idle down for 5 min after pulling. Cool the turbo down and will increase the life. Run a fuel additive. I run archoil oil/diesel additive. Runs good.

      @TheBTRGarage  6 років тому +4

      Thanks for the tip, makes sense. Just like turbo timers on my gas turbo cars.

    • @caleswartwood7616

      BTR Justin ya if you don’t let the turbo cool down then excess oil will stay in the turbo which over time will cause turbo stiction. Also I would wait for the glow plug light to go off before starting it then letting it idle for about 7-10 minutes before driving it if it is cold. But really cool truck.

      These trucks don't need to wait for glowplugs unless it's below 30 degrees it's perfectly fine to start them right up I'm a 15- year certified tech

      @centraltexasfoxbodies 5 років тому +3

      The oil flow in the turbo is almost always the same, shutting them off with high oil temps will cause the bearings in the turbo to gum up, that's what ruins the turbo.

    I have a 99 7.3. Pulled a trailer from Colorado to Florida, hauling 7500lbs. Trucks my daily and just took me from florida to texas for some training. Super reliable.. I even got 18mpg going 75mph and towing that trailer got high 11s.

      Nice! Is your truck stock, or any upgrades? I am getting 9-10mpg towing the big enclosed trailer pictured in the video. Not sure what it gets when not towing because when it's being driven it is almost always towing :)

    Just found you're video's, great find on the truck it's in amazing shape. A few tips since I own 2 7.3's use Mororcraft only fuel and oil filter's, use some type of fuel additive like Diesel Kleen, and Opti-lube has the best lubricity for you're injectors, the PHP Hydra chip is the best bang for you're buck, shift on the fly, completely programmable with you're laptop. I could go on for awhile with all the upgrade's you need, and since you are towing upgrade the transmission cooler with the 6.0L cooler, it;s a direct bolt in except for having to get a adapter because the stock cooler line is 3/8" and the 6.0L cooler is 1/2" line. last tip get the Edge SCT2 monitor you will love it.

    I love my 7.3! If you are ever worried about weird ticks or knocks, don't worry about it. These things have old PCUs, old shifting monitors, etc... They will make some ticks and some weird sounds every now and then in certain RPMs. Particularly 45 mph while in OD. This truck is very obvious when things are wrong with it. Small ticks and weird sounds will be nothing to worry about :) I've owned 3 7.3s and all have made it past 400k miles except for the one I own now, only 257k

    Nice truck, my dad had one almost exactly like it when I was growing up. He bought it when it was new, '02 F-250 Lariat 7.3 and now I have my '96 F-250 7.3. Check out Riffraff Diesel for stuff, they make a lot of great parts for these trucks, Rosewood is also a great brand for injectors when you want to step them up. When you do a tuner I strongly recommend a Hydra, you can hold alot of tunes and when you want/need new ones it's way easier than with a TS6 chip or something equivalent.

    Wooow!! Really clean truck. Ccsb too! I have a 03 cclb drw. If you can spend the money I'd get a Hydra tuner. Don't get the ts6 chip. Also I'd suggest a factory OEM AIS intake or a s&b. The AIS intake will be quiet (if you don't like the noise of a 6.0L) and filters great. The OEM 99-03 airboxs are junk and can dust the turbo/engine. I'd also get rid of the EBPV. Check exhaust back pressure tube for clogs. Riffraff has the best deals on OEM fuel filters and he sells what works on 7.3L. Don't trust the OEM trans temp gauge. Valvoline Max life ATF is great and you can get it cheap at Walmart. Switch to 85-140 oil in the diff. Buy synthetic so it already has the friction modifiers. DO NOT DO A CRANK CASE BREATHER MOD. trust me. Check your coolant tank for leaks. Get a new pressure cap too. Buy car gauge pro or torque app you can setup extra gauges on your phone.

But i agree the aftermarket world for these trucks is eness im pushing 296k miles on my 7.3L if you have any question feel free to ask.

    When driving a diesel truck, it feels weird saying “I’m low on diesel” bc I’m used to saying “I’m low on gas”

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  2 роки тому +1

      I think a lot of us just use "gas" as a general term for "fuel", not specifically gasoline. I know I have...I also don't say "hit the diesel pedal" to accelerate, because that also feels weird 😆

    7.3 are an extreamly reliable truck but be careful when modifieing 2000 to 2004 had a weak bottem end and can only hold up to 500 hp. My dad had a 04 model and that was at 750 hp with the stock internels and yeah that didn't end well the whole block split into 4 pieces and fell out the bottem of the truck so when he rebuilt it he put a 99 botem end and engine block on it with stronger internals and it's been running at 850 hp for 8 years now and still running good. We soldil it 5 years ago and it's been nothing but abused for 5 years and still runs. Be careful of the trans to they seem to be weak they need to be built to Handel anymore than 500 hp

    I got my dads old F350 2003 6.0L, I drive it to school and have a couple questions for you @BTR Justin...
    I am curious where you got those floor mats, not looking to spend a lot on Weather Tech mats and my dads old ones were never made for the truck.
    I was also curious about your thoughts on the F350 6.0L. I've heard it could possibly be the worst truck Ford has made and my dad has poured in lots of money over the years to fix problems, but overall its great truck. I have the same color as you with a Cattle Guard and Headache rack.

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  3 роки тому

      Nice truck! The floor mats are Husky liners, great mats and not expensive at all!
      ► Ford F250/F350 Husky floor liners front : amzn.to/3lLQtyb
      ► Ford F250/F350 Husky floor liner rear : amzn.to/3lP47Rg
      I've heard a lot of good and a lot of bad about the 6.0. The consensus seems to be that if you "bullet proof" them with general maintenance updates, they are rock solid. Otherwise it is hit and miss. A friend of mine has a dually 6.0 that is bone stock and he never has problems, others just seem to have problem after problem.

    Is true than maintenance is to expensive for that truck?

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  3 роки тому

      It's a 19 year old truck at this point, but I don't think it is overly expensive to maintain. Some of the big jobs (like injectors) will not be cheap, but that kind of work with last another 80k+ miles, give or take. Your typical oil change will be more expensive than a car, just because of the sheer amount of oil it takes to fill these things up.
