Great Solo from Anto!
So much Collins in Nirs drumming, bless him.
Wow great version of this classic Genesis song!
I dont know why your comment got so many negative votes..but im with you on this.... Anto surely does a great job on this ! hes got so much feel and knows where to use what ..
Nir does a wonderful job with the drums here.
I agree with you. there is a big soul in this interpretation of the video. Sensibility!
Anthony Drennan's playing in this video is undeniably excellent. It's certainly different from Steve Hackett and Daryl Stuermer but it's equally as good and he's also put some of his own personality into it. He probably couldn't have done this without the blessing of the two senior Genesis members. Tony Banks has also been documented as saying that he really likes Drennan's guitar playing and that he'd liked to have worked with him some more.
IMO this is the second best version of Firth of Fifth guitar solo. In my personal ranking, 1st is Steve Hackett (any period), 3rd is Daryl's 1992/2007/2021-22, and 4th is Daryl's 1981-1984 (I like the improvising but it doesn't sound that good)
I think Anto Drennan sound really good on this piece
On the Phil Collins era songs everyone says "Gabriel is better than Collins" or "Hackett better than Daryl Stuermer" but here everyone says "Gabriel and Collins better than Wilson" and Hackett and Stuermer better than this guitarist (don't know his name)". I think I've seen only 3 comments on all the Stuermer videos where someone says, "Stuermer is not that bad" and now I find Daryl fans, that's interesting. If Genesis will reunite tomorrow and recruit a new singer for a world tour what would the fans say? "Wilson is better than him" or what?
I use to imagine the Genesis band in a allnew show with a guest female singers group like the juvenile soap-opera casts of Latin America (I'm from Argentina and I hate that things) and the feature of medleys with both bands songs. Imagine how the crowd would react to that. I think more than the half would hate it.
Would have been interesting if Phil and Nir had got together to drum on this one....
MIke has said in interviews that he cannot play this solo very well and that is the case with most of Steve's stuff, so thats why Mike sticks to bass for most of the Gabriel stuff.
Except rhythm guitars (like in The Cinema Show instrumental section)
A really great version by Anthony Drennan and Nir Z.
I really love it since I discovered it in Paris in december 1997. And "Firth of Fifth" is my favourite Genesis song.
I certainly agree about Nir Z. But, I think that Anthony Drenon is not a bad guitar player at all. He's not Hackett, but I think he does the job well enough.
I gotta say, I never liked Daryl's solo on this...way to overblown.
This guy kept to Steve's theme, made it his own, and didn't succumb to endless runs.
Way better.
Agree. A lot.
Agree, the tone is better than darryl’s also
One of the best players in the world, so tasty
Chester and Phil are unbeatable
And Then There Were Two? Next it could be Michael Rutherford is Genesis Live - Tour 2012!
Come on guys.....! Anthony Drennan is an excellent musician. Genesis wouldn't have brought him onboard otherwise. His playing on this classic piece is perfect. It's certainly more appealing than Daryl's and just as good as Steve, but with different personality to it.
Driver2616 Mike seemed to like Ant - when he rebooted Mike & The Mechanics in 2011 he got Ant on board as an additional guitarist/bassist.
Daryl is a virtuoso : no one plays as good as him
stop bashing daryl !!
@angusyoung98 thank you! Someone who didn't get paid for posting a totally, bogus, positive comment!!!
This was such a bizarre period... Not only did Rutherford and Banks hire a twenty-something to front the band, but two new backing musicians as well. It all had little to do with Genesis, in my opinion, and is interesting only as a curiosum. Still, I'm very grateful you have posted this - it's hard tome come by material from this time, and this version isn't bad after all.
The bizarre thing about this is that they are playing Firth of Fifth together.
And I must add to what I already commented about Ant Drennan, the drummer did the Phil's licks more than very good. In fact, he did my favorite drumfill of this song, that is the one Phil did in 1977, 1981, 1983-1984 and 1992 medleys, that was also replicated by his song Nic in many concerts of the Last Domino tour.
Mike should be doing the solo's.
Rumor, is he wanted to be a full band member...something Banks and Rutherford weren't prepared to do. Still, I have to wonder that tour would have sounded with him getting as the only drummer for the first time.
Your right. i just heard the drum fill and it was messed up.
Gabriel should swallow his ego and do one tour with the lads for all the fans that gave him enough dough to go solo in the first place!
@Tsnore I wonder if Gabriel returning to Genesis is somewhat like Lionel Ritchie returning to The Commodores. It would be worthwhile to make great songwriting in to great songs, but it might be akin to working in tough-as-hell conditions. I thought there were more than a couple of egos and/or muses jousting for position in the songsmiths' workshop.
i Like Drennen's sound better than daryl's sound. If Drennen would had played the solo just the way it was written. it would be right up there with steve.
Not even Steve himself plays it the same way it was recorded. In modern live recordings (since mid 90s to this day), his soloing is pretty in par with Daryl's, but with his personal style that makes it sound like himself.
This is much more listenable than ANY of Dayrl's versions. Way to go Anthony Drennon!!
Darryl played a great solo in Rome 2007, but Anthony is a better player anyway.
@@marcoottaviani2942 its the same he did in 1992 in every concert. With solo band and in Genesis Last Domino.
@@FukiMakai that's Anto Drennan not Daryl.
@@marcoottaviani2942 I was talking about what Daryl did in 2007
@@FukiMakai that's why Anto is better than Daryl.
I never knew why Stuermer and Thompson had to leave just because the change of the lead vocalist.
It worked out for Phil as Daryl went on to continue with PC for the DITL tour and then the Big Band shows!
Before the recording of calling all station, Thompson was contacted about his availability for an eventual tour ,and request band member and composer status.which was denied.they subsequently parted ways.
Daryl was with Phil on his big band tour at that time. Chester actually took some time off touring, because he moved to Nashville and wanted to spend some time with his family (he also didn't play drums on Phil's solo tours in 1994 and 1997).
Yeah Daryl decided to stick to Phil’s path & Chester would’ve too if he was still available all those years left out & plus this was really how anto won his spot into mikes solo band too aka the mechanics
Music Man Silhouette Special
Anto sounds so much like Steve. Amazing. Nir. Spot on too in my opinion. Guitar solos with FoF always have a bit of ad lib i find sometimes
what guitar is the blue one?
Its the "Ernie Ball Musicman"
the guitar's solo seems "samba pa ti" of Santana
That's a bit harsh. Drennan has done a lot of good guitar work over the years with many performers.
Anthony Drennan didnt to TOO bad but I thought Nir did pretty good on the drums. Considering the circumstances it really could have been worse but it was good for what it was. CAS is still a good album. You're stepping into Hackett and Collins territory. NO ONE is gonna be as good as the originals but these guys did a good job. IMO
I wouldn´t put Daryl´s work at the same level than Steve´s. I love this song in every version, but I think that the original studio version, with its little amount of notes, is unsurpassed in emotion.
The whole studio version, with all its subtle arrangements, has an oldie melancholy that kills me.
arleco12 Daryls jazz fusion noodling killed the firth of fifth vibe, to get the emotion out of this solo it needs to be played in a simple way, the way it was written
Have you heard Steve doing the solo live? He plays more agressively but with the same vibe.
Chester was semi retired when this tour happened (From Chapter and verse) Phil even had a different drummer for 1994 and 1997 tours. I agree Nir Z is a good drummer but needs some .....umph
The overall sound of the drums could be better, but the drumming is more than good
Mike plays almost the same as in 1992, wich is aweosome, and Tony does also, the problem here are the patches, they sound worse than 1992, it has some kind of low quality sound to it, while The Lamb on this tour sounds different but i still like it a lot. In 2007 the patches where worse tho.
The organ is great (it sounds more like an actual organ than any synth Tony ever used between 1981 and 1992), but the lead synth is somewhat weaker than the 1992 one.
Nick did his guitar parts quite well and made this song his own but, still falls a little short on the creative side.
Ltlegendary who's Nick?
Who is Nick?
steve hackett will always be the best, but this guy is pretty good
Better than Phil on drums ?!!! Slightly different maybe, not better, Phil hit perfection in his playing, this to me sounds a little bit 'session player' to me
This could have been a new era for Genesis. Shame it was aborted.
@sgq85 pffft. Please.
Nothing can touch Daryll's version
Love me or hate me, no matters. Ant Drennan does a better job than Daryl Stuermer. Ant adds his personality to the solo and improvises, Daryl just... repeats the same overloaded version of 1992.
4 years later I'm still with myself on this.
Agreed! He certainly does do a better job here. It’s actually more than very good.
@@Driver2616 He's the only one ever that could do different without the feeling something is wrong. The solo is actually enjoyable. I think if I was Hackett i'd love it.
Would like to know how he'd do I Know What I Like along Tony Banks.
And Daryl improvised that solo more in 2007 tour. Maybe because of this one.
Ant fixed the solo, he bought it back to it's roots but made it his own.
Yup the beginning bit & made a lil addition with a high note then onto the chorus which is just a Steve 2.0 we been looking for this whole time
until 1:45 it was firth of fifth, then something else showed up which wasn't good
greatpcfan it did get back on track after that bit of nooodling at 3.00
The drummer NIr Z plays very good !!better than NIC : a more mature playing
I also felt Drennan played the bass better than Daryl as well.
Yeah massively & can play guitar solos more maturity & dynamic like Daryl just adding his own parts & just wobbling his strings too much during a solo he’s just a bit too ott tho I like Daryl’s playing maybe just a bit more percentage for Anto he’s gone thru all the corrs texture so yeah his bass playing much percentage more then Daryl even tho they’re both classed as lead guitar players they both got to learn bass & become a bassist all coz of Mike so yeah u could call him the best bass player teacher yk & how to play guitar slow like he does
Nick DiVirgilio would have been a much better drummer for this tour, IMO...
Damn, you people are harsh.
guitar is all over the place, drummer need more conviction and Hackett clean and disciplined solo is still the best.
dissapointing ending.
Tony must have been wincing on this one
juste pour le guitariste...
Not bad but doesnt sound right in places
Don't get me wrong, I also think that Daryl is a great guitarist, I heard his solo albums and they are amazing. I've just heard one and only one song played by him, which was horrible. It's firth of fifth with his solo. Lack of feeling, melody and too many shredding licks. It completly doesn't fit to this masterpiece song.
Great solo, miles better that Daryl Stuermer's. I wonder why they let Anto off in 2007 tour. He really feels this song, and Daryl seems to get tired playing this.
Daryl Stuermer always!!! I don't want to know second(tribe) opinion(s)...
No words ... Eh ?
Chester Thompson is really Great !
But ... Nir ZIDKYAHU (Made in Israel) is a INCREDIBLE drummer !
No doubt ...
way to butcher the solo
@Squonk337 the solo is crap, simple as that
WTF is with all that widdly wankery at the beginning of the solo? Ok it gets back on track..but jeez :/
JohnBoyd I thought here's another Daryl Stuermer for a moment, he did eventually stick to formula though
The drumming is technically good, but boring. No sense of dynamics or emotion. What a waste on an amazing TB song that still moves me. I'd would have loved to heard Ray sing the vocal part.
