And best of all, he even told us how we can confirm which wire goes where if we were working on more expensive headsets that use a different cord layout. Really detailed and I actually learned something.
Thank you so much for a great video. You saved me a lot of money in the process. Repair for less than a fiver versus new headset for 50. Made my gamer son very happy .
Great video. For anyone wanting to do this without a soldering iron there are jacks with screws that don't require soldering, you simply screw the cables in place, they cost a bit more though.
Finally, someone answered my questions. Thank you so much. I taught myself about these jacks because I needed them to get my job done at one point... however, I had no idea WHY I had to use them with specificity. Now I know.
I never knew the white wire was a cable, i thought it was plastic to hold the red/green wires that wrap on it. Thank you for giving me a bit of knowledge for soldering my headphones.
Vince, your a legend! I was struggling to work out what went where. I just wanted to say, on the pair i've just fixed, the green and red twisted pair surrounded the white wire so I needed to separate them before soldering on the new jack. Top man!
Top video, was just about to bin my headset and this popped up on a google search. I couldn't work out why I couldn't ring the wires to the plug until I watched your vid all the way through. Really helpful, many thanks!
bro this video is perfect, i legit forgot my green turtle beach headphones were on and i was gonna go do the laundry and i got up and bent my audio jack and couldnt hear out the right ear, legit same origin story as u lmao. this vid helped alot thank you so much
My son is on his 3rd turtle beach headset now, the previous two have got the same bent jack that you mentioned where he's just yanked it out carelessly. Hoping he's finally learnt a lesson now but I'm going to have a crack at repairing the previous two, thanks for the upload.
Although you said you were doing the soldering for the first time. I watched the whole video with your beautiful English accent and wonderful video that covered everything. You are a great instructor and teacher. Thank you for a job well-done. I liked your video. You are a PRO.
Great tutorial. I've ordered a four pole jack, but I think I'm going to splice in a new section of wire with a new jack on the end after watching this.
Nearly pulled my hair out trying to solder those tiny wires... A few tips... Get those reverse tweezers clamps if you can... This was super annoying to do without wire shrink wrap so get some (heat shrink tubing)... Make sure to thread all parts you need on the wires before you solder them (shrink wrap, 3.5mm housing, and do it in the right order, DOH!)... Plan it out and have patience. I re-soldered them like 5 times. 🤦♀️🤣 I might have PTSD from that

Fantastic video man!!! I need to do this EXACT repair on a set of Turtle Beach headphones as well so I am VERY GRATEFUL for what you have done here!!! Thank you VERY MUCH!!!
Oh boy, should have watched your video first. Stupid me, I never considered 4 pole vs 3 pole vs 2 pole. Now I've got some worthless mono plugs! Off to the net I go. Anyway, thanks for putting these kinds of videos together. It's the imperfection that makes them different and all the better!
I have two sets of Hyper X II headsets and one of the jacks is loose another just got bent slightly. At 120 a pair now this will be invaluable! Thank you sir! (Thankfully I found a second pair at a thrift store for 8 bucks, my first pair I bought new. I recommend them as they have been through a lot over the years!)
Hey Vince, I was able to repair two headsets so far, one Turtle Beach and one After Glow for my two nephews. What I did was go to the Dollar Tree store in the US and buy the $1 earbuds that have the microphone. It's a quick way to access a cable plug. On the Turtle B. one I just replaced the plug to volume section. On the After G. I replaced all wires. The wires are not as sturdy obviously but it get's them going. There are only 4 wires inside the earbuds but the extra wire on the gaming headphones was a ground.
Tks for this I had the same problem with my Samsung headphones I'm really glad I didn't chuck them away it will give me something for the weekend to work on 👍
This is the best video ive seen you know why? cuz i have the same headphones as you except mine are the white ones and i have the same problem!!!! subbed! cheers!
I am wondering if it would have been possible to make a knot before soldering the wires to the jack to prevent breaking the soldering job if someone pulled the cable instead of the plastic covering. Great tutorial!
i love videos that pay attention to detail and i appreciate how you emphasis testing continuity with your solder drips on the new connector before soldering the wires to it. i watched a few videos prior with more views and, though they had a soldering kit, they didnt use a volt meter to work smarter. i imagine that would create a lot of trial and error attempts. also mapping the wires with the volt meter is one of those preparations that eliminate user error in connecting wrong ends - no guess work right? excellent video mate. thank you
helpful video. the original male plug broke into pieces on my speaker jack to the subwoofer. I'm checking with the manufacturer if they can send me a replacement plug or just a better solution. I may just get a whole new speaker set.. just feels bad wasting the rest of the hardware.
thank you for the info. it really saved me for finding out where the different connections were on the jack. successfully reapaired my pair giving new use
Thanks for the video tutorial mate. It helped me a lot, I put on wrong location two of the cables, the sound was low and the microphone did not work. After this video all is perfect. Thanks a lot and great job.
Thanks! Burning the insulation off seems to keep one from breaking the small wires. Good idea! I saw one video for phone headsets that claims the wires are coated with an enamel that needs to be burned off as well to make a good solder connection.
Thanks for mapping out the wires by color. It worked great. I used Goop glue to encase the wires and anchor them and slid the plastic jacket over that. Seems to have worked.
I was looking for a video on how to replace a jack coincidentally it’s the exact same headset and issue! I wonder if turtle bay have had this issue from other customers?
So I'm thinking one of the solderless breakout screw terminals from Amazon might be the way to go now. Cut the end off, strip the cable, screw down, done. Like the video though, and attention to detail. Informative and educational.
Very informative. Thank you. I knew how to solder the wires back on. My problem was that I couldn't find the Turtle Beach headset wire color coding diagram anywhere. So thank you very much. This video helped a lot with that. I was able to fix my $50 Turtle Beach headset with the jack from a dollar store pair of earbuds. Lol
I have no experience with fixing electronics and this seems beyond what I am capable of, so I am going to try out something a little different. I bought a 3.5 mm male to male off of the Amazon. Instead of having to solder the wires to the headphone plug, I am going to cut the jack off of my headset along with the male to male, then connect the wires of the new jack to the wires in the old headset. Hopefully it works!
For me I ripped the Aux cable out of that little module in between that switches the mic on and off. Is it labelled on the board where I solder the wires
Great video.. I have a turtle beach headset and after I fixed it, the volume is really low with both volume on phone and headset sitting at full. I squeezed the jack and the volume went up momentarily. Any thoughts?

I like your video explaining how to replace the jack plug but what also caught my eye was the small notebook you had on the table. Do you know what make and model is that small notebook...
Vince...I have an old headset that has two jacks, I guess one for mic, one for sound. The headset uses one old 6.35 mm (0.25") diameter jack and one that's slightly smaller at 5.08mm (~0.2") Where can source these old jacks? Thanks
Crazy that the break point is all the same. I bought cheap replacement aux cables for my sennheiser game ones and they only lasted 3 months each, original lasted almost 6 years. I've had enough so I'm just gonna follow your guide and solder it myself. Finding genuine sennheiser game one aux cables are just too expensive. I really do hate 2.5mm 4 pole jacks now.
Having a fan running might help with the smoke issue. A little liquid electrical tape or silicone adhesive caulk will improve where the cable comes out of the replacement jack. Dab it in with a toothpick if appearances matter to you.
I have a pair of these same headphones, the white model specifically (I didn't buy them, they belong to my mom and I had to use them because my aux cord died the same way that the jack on them got bent) and when I dropped my laptop earlier, the tip bent, but after wiggling it about and making sure it was all the way in, they still work from both sides, so I really lucked out, but in your opinion, how much longer do they have to live?
i can't use any of the information in this video as of right now, but I'm really glad this video exists because I want to get a nice pair of xbox 360 headphones with the separate chat and game volume dials, along with the mute button, and just replace the 2.5mm jack with a 3.5mm. For some goddamn reason everyone decided the Xbox One doesn't support separate volume controllers and there are no headsets that aren't for the 360 that have that kind of thing. I'm hoping if I just replace the 2.5mm jack with a 3.5mm then I'll magically be able to control chat volume and game volume individually on the One, but at the same time I'm sure that's just wishful thinking.
I have a Turtle Beach as well I don't know the model but the jack got scratched on the 2nd prong and the right ear doesn't have sound and if I'm playing a game I don't get game audio unless I fiddle around with it.

Hi, Great video mate.I have a set of Turtle Beach X04 with the same issue, however I have 4 wires, Red, Green, Red and Green twisted in copper and a bare copper wire, no White. Any ideas? I suppose I could just hold the wire against the tip to test maybe.Very much appreciated.
Hey did you ever end up getting this figured out? I'm actually in the process of fixing my own pair of XO Four headphones that have a broken 3.5mm and I can't seem to figure out which one is Microphone and which one is Ground since there really is no white wire like every other video seems to show.
for future readers, the white wire tends to be wrapped in copper shielding so if you have a copper wire with no insulation over it pull it back to find the white wire
I literally did the exact same thing you did. my problem is that I can hear things through both ears but I have to keep turning the jack like I am finding a radio station. I got the same headset but I got it practically new but since someone bought it and used it for about a week and didn't want it so got the mic for about $20. I know how to solder but, I do not own one personally to do this repair.
Probably shorting to ground, the housing or across channels (left and right). Shrink wrap the wire to the terminal with this stuff www.amazon.com/Industrial-Heat-shrink-Tubing/b?ie=UTF8&node=700782011. Wrap all the mini wires with Etape to help reinforce them
"I know how to solder but, I do not own one personally to do this repair." Bro that's literally a mood, I'm the exact same way. Considering going to a hardware store so I can find an el cheapo in case I need to do one of these repairs.
Definitely worth it. The skill set of soldering enables you to repair even create things rather than always spending money to buy new stuff.

Pretty sure this is why high-end headphones don't have a cord permanently soldered to the headset. If the cord breaks, you just get another one.
Agreed... but sadly my headphones, which are pretty high-end, came out before they started doing that.
Sorry Nate, this poor parent doesn't just throw out $60 headphones.

for future readers, the white wire tends to be wrapped in copper shielding so if you have a copper wire with no insulation over it pull it back to find the white wire
will this also work for apple earpods, since they come with remote also?
Fantastic video, thanks!
thanks for uploading, very helpful
Will this work if you use a apple jack from the headphones as the replacement

Bro that's literally a mood, I'm the exact same way. Considering going to a hardware store so I can find an el cheapo in case I need to do one of these repairs.
