When I was trained as a military radio operator we called those electornic connectors "Bendix" connectors - Bendix being a manufacturer. I always think of (and hear) the Special AKA "What I like most about you, is your girlfriend" music video when I see silver space suits.
So regarding the chemical rocket comment at the end - the rockets used in the Mercury missions didn't use Hydrogen/Oxygen - the Redstone rockets used LOX + Ethyl Alcohol and the Atlas used LOX + RP-1 (Kerosene)
Adam is a person that naturally loves to talk and express himself. The guy that does the interview always speeks on top of adam and change the subject and/or does a stupid comment to look smart. I dont remember your name but if you are the guy that did the interview and you read this, let me tell you this mate: I do not care about you. Im watching this video because i want to watch Adam Savage. Adam could EASILY talk for 15 minutes about this suit without you. All i expect you to do, is point out things that Adam might be forgetting or things that he would think are not important and ask a question about it. If you know the answer, well good for YOU mate. I dont care about your knowledge of different things, all i want to ear about is Adam and his stuff. Let Adam talk ! If he talks about something and you know what hes going to say well dont say it for him. I dont want to watch a video about a random ''smartass'' showing a spacesuit, i want to watch Adam showing HIS spacesuit. Now im sorry if i offended you or anybody, but i think you should only ask questions in this interview and dont say anything else. In my opinion, you dont even need to be filmed in this video, you could stand by the cameraman and let Adam show off his item and occasionally ask a question to point out something that Adam might have missed. Thanks.
Adam, this is an old video, but as an Army aviation maintainer, I can probably guarantee that exact same connector is still in service on one of our aircraft. It's mind blowing how little some parts have changed!
It's actually still a standard connector in the stage entertainment industry, I know it a simply a 'motor control' connector, for the chain motors that fly trusses and such. When I took a trip and swung by Edwards, I spotted the same on the B-52 used for the X-15! Marked as a data connector if memory serves.
Great job! The extra helmet tube is for the faceplate seal pressure bottle and the cable assembly keeps the neck ring from trying to pull your head off when the suit inflates. Beautiful suit...
I was astounded to hear Adam mention the flashlight at the end of the glove. My father was the Master Controller for the Mercury spaceflight program and was the engineer tasked with developing the glove finger light! If Adam would be interested in hearing the real story behind it, contact me and I'll put you in touch.
"If you were wearing this out, you'd probably put on a pair of long johns." "Oh I have a pair on order." I just love how Adam always thinks of everything when making these replicas.
wow i didn't know that jim lovell and frank borman both flew together on 2 missions. (to those who dont know jim lovell flew on gemini 7 and 12 and apollo 8 and 13 for wich he is most known)
Watching this video, I am age 12 again, and I am experiencing extreme 'gadget envy' looking at that wearable repro Mercury Space Suit.....growing up in Titusville, Florida, the Astronauts were my heroes, and I lived in an era where genuine Demi-gods walked the earth, and rode to the heavens wearing such equipment...thanks for this video...
Adam is awesome. He makes tested the percect show. He never ceases to amaze me. Thats why i watch. Keep being urself buddy. I think he is inching towards who i would choose to switch with in life if givin a chance. Cool stuff
I have one of these, amazing job. After talking with Al Worden (Apollo 15), who got them made, I just HAD to have one. I've seen several originals in real life...
Actually, there was an interesting photo shoot done for Harpers Bazaar's April 1965's issue. Richard Avedon photographed model Jean Shrimpton and also Paul McCartney and model Naty Abascal each wearing a borrowed NASA Mercury spacesuit.
Ive just lived ANOTHER dream through Adam!! sigh. I have been planning a replica build for the Mk4 Mercury suit for years, i even contacted the makers of this suit for patterns, but no go :( I want sure before Adam put it on that it was going to look authentic, but as soon as he tightened those chest straps, i got chills! Nice work and ill keep dreaming, maybe i'll make one myself!
In regards to the Omega Speedmaster Adam is wearing. Walter Schirra on Mercury-Atlas 8 was the first to take his own personal Omega Speedmaster into space. However I’m unable to find any evidence it was strapped externally onto the suit. The Speedmaster was only officially qualified for use in space in 1965 so I’ve only seen it used externally on Gemini missions with V207 watchbands. John Glenn however did have a Heuer stopwatch, Reference 2915-A strapped externally to his suit for Mercury-Atlas 6.
Adam, you have so many things you actively do. How do you keep track of all the things? Do you keep a journal with ideas and things, or do you remember all the stuff?
I can't help but notice the cheap Donnie Darko bunny mask in the background. Is there going to be a episode of that one? is Adam doing anything with it?
Does someone know what the silver leather spray Adam used for the gloves is and where to purchase it? I could use that product in several of my own projects and would love to know what it is.
Where would you get a copy of the helmet? I am planning the flight suit of the astronauts from the movie Robinson Crusoe on mars and the helmet is the hardest thing to get.
Spray painted gloves, leather boots, Soviet era Mig neckring? Who cares? The original space suits were never used in a vacuum either, thank God. It's the process of building and wearing this work of art that brings history to life. Thank's professor Savage. Wear it proudly.
Noe Anguiano He is just super condescending, and treats Adam's passion as some weird out of season, crazy shit. Cannot really pinpoint a specific moment, but you can just feel the whole "superior that you" vibe. You know, little things like this: 15:27. I can be making a huge mistake about his personality, but he has all those annoying traits. Do not really like these types of people.
whiteshadow3000 No, that's all in your head. I get none of those vibes from him. Johnny Bravo And I wouldn't even say this is true... people in casual social situations, especially where they're impassioned, tend to talk quickly, and often even over each other a bit. I've seen this opinion a lot, and it just seems nonsensical to me. This is how people talk to each other. This is how everyone I have ever met talks to each other outside of formal situations.
Also, being a geek, he wants to let the audience know some of his space lore. Which may be a bit condescending in hindsight. The interviewer should have waited a few seconds or at least a full second after Adam said something. Because the video is about Adam, not the interviewer.
I felt the same way when I put on my Jebediah Kerman costume. Thanks to Scott Manley for the tutorials otherwise I would've gotten bored of distant explosions.
Does someone know a good alternative to this jacket? I'm trying to make my own basically without breaking the bank. I've gotten pretty close, but if you know of a really good version it would help tremendously. Gosh its so GOOD
Ground control to Major Savage! That is so cool and I too have a better appreciation for what these men and woman had to go through. Show me more space stuff! lol :)
My library has a copy of "Dressing for Altitude: U.S. Aviation Pressure Suits" by Dennis R. Jenkins. It's a history of pressure suit development from the 20s to the Space Shuttle. You should track down a copy if this is something that really interests you.
I am thinking about making a cosplay with a full face mask, but I don’t know how to keep it from fogging up. Should I use a fan, or is there a more low-tech solution?
Hey guys from Tested. Namely Adam. I was wondering if you could. Possibly tell me where, or at least point me in the right direction for acquiring maybe not a Mercury suit but possibly a Orlan-D Cosmonaut suit. I am very big on the history if the Cold War. I am part of the last generation born during the waning years of the Soviet Union. If you could help me out it would be great.
Please just get adam to make litle five minute videos of trinkets hes collected over the years! i need more! also the rabbit mask in the back ground is from the cult film, Donnie Darko
Adam et al: The plug on the suit leg is a mil-spec multi-pin connector, it looks like the type commonly used in aircraft and other stuff like that. I believe they are mostly water-tight. They're common for places where you have lots of wires going to a piece of a vehicle that's removable, like an airplane wing. They're round, locking, keyed connectors with lots of separate pins. The common name for them is "cannon plug" or "canon plug", although I think Cannon is a originally a brand name. Common pin counts are 6 or 7, 17 and 19 pin, and 51 pin. If you look for cannon plug on ebay you'll find lots of them. I'd post links but I think that dumps the comment to the spam filter. Love the suit! It's fantastic! Craig Steffen @gevmage
If I recall the vids correctly, Adam's wife bought him a Seamaster as a present, and given they are fairly big ticket items, he's probably going to go with what he has, rather than drop a few grand for one item for a costume?
engineeredlifeform The watch in the video was a Speedmaster automatic, not a Seamaster. The watch that was used by NASA to go to the moon was a manual wind Speedmaster Professional.
Ahem, the Bulova Accutron Astronaut: "The Accutron Astronaut was the first American watch in space, and was worn by a number of NASA astronauts. Mercury pilot L. Gordon 'Gordo' Cooper Jr. flight-tested both the Accutron Astronaut and the Omega Speedmaster during his 22-orbit Mercury-Atlas 9 Faith 7 mission; Cooper noted that the Speedmaster had lost time due to the severe G-forces experienced during liftoff, while the Accutron remained unaffected. It is a popular myth among Omega enthusiasts that Cooper used his Speedmaster to time the retro burn during atmospheric re-entry. However, according to his autobiography Leap of Faith, Cooper used his Astronaut to time the retro burn, resulting in the most accurate splashdown achieved during the Mercury program."
The original Omega Speedmaster was specifically designed for use inside a space capsule. It featured a clear plastic dome rather than a glass cover because there was some concern that if the glass shattered the floating debris might get caught in the ventilation system end end up being inhaled, causing damage to the astronauts lungs. When the apollo program was lanched the Speedmaster was the only watch that was approved by NASA due to this safety feature.
That is entirely incorrect. The Speedmaster was an off the shelve item from a Dallas jeweller. It and several other watches were bought from there to be tested for use in the space missions. The Speedmaster with its Lemania 2310 movement was the most durable of the lot, so it was chosen. The Speedmaster had always featured a Hexalite (polycarbonate) glass, and would continue so for decades. The only modification to the watch was the removal of the link brace, replacing it with a long nylon strap with Velcro patches to enable it to wrap around the very thick space suits.

Go play KSP you...
applesapje I just might do that
He's Scott Manley, fly safe!
Fly safe!
Fancy seeing you here Scott. Fly Safe.
The actual Mercury capsule was almost as tight, the pilots said that they 'wore' the capsule rather than sat inside it.
Didn't expect to see you here!
Yet again, Godspeed Scott!
you sly dog...

The same connectors are still used in the Royal Navy, there's no point changing something that works!
"Men wore boots"
"Men *wear* boots"
Adam you're awesome!
Great job! The extra helmet tube is for the faceplate seal pressure bottle and the cable assembly keeps the neck ring from trying to pull your head off when the suit inflates. Beautiful suit...
Awww, man. I really want one of those flight jackets!
I was astounded to hear Adam mention the flashlight at the end of the glove. Wow i know this was 8 years ago, but thats so sick!
the object hanging from the roof at 00:02 is a 5MB harddrive from the 1970s. adam has so much amazing stuff.
The door in the centre though is utterly perfect: the Nebuchadnezzar commission plate, a BPRD insignia, and Chris Schaie's iris device. Yes.
WHAT.
Actually it's a 1GB HDD from 1981. He shows it off in another video.
David Brown Which one?
David Brown
oh ok, it looks similar to an early 70s IBM one.
"If you were wearing this out, you'd probably put on a pair of long johns." "Oh I have a pair on order." I just love how Adam always thinks of everything when making these replicas.
10:50. I believe that valve nipple attaches to a pressurized canister to put gas in the helmet seal around the faceplate, thus making it air tight.
Gorman? There was a "Borman" (Frank- Gemini 7 and Apollo 8). On A-15: Dave Scott (CDR), Al Worden (CMP), and Jim Irwin (LMP). Maybe meant Worden?
+Mark Pierce Maybe Lt. Gorman from Aliens? =P
wow i didn't know that jim lovell and frank borman both flew together on 2 missions. (to those who dont know jim lovell flew on gemini 7 and 12 and apollo 8 and 13 for wich he is most known)

Any links on how to order the jacket?
Found it, I think - google alexanderleathers apollo
Adam is awesome. He makes tested the percect show. He never ceases to amaze me. Thats why i watch. Keep being urself buddy. I think he is inching towards who i would choose to switch with in life if givin a chance. Cool stuff
It just makes me happy to know that there are people who are willing to spend money to re-create things like this
Do you think that finger flashlight mentioned at 5:26 is where Spielberg got the idea for ET's glowing finger?
I have one of these, amazing job. After talking with Al Worden (Apollo 15), who got them made, I just HAD to have one. I've seen several originals in real life...
Adam Savages life is mine come to life. Thanks for everything Adam. You have remained a very humble guy and I like you a lot. Never change.
Actually, there was an interesting photo shoot done for Harpers Bazaar's April 1965's issue. Richard Avedon photographed model Jean Shrimpton and also Paul McCartney and model Naty Abascal each wearing a borrowed NASA Mercury spacesuit.
That smash zoom-in was magic
God I am so happy I found and subbed to Tested! :D
Adam Savage could sell anything to anyone! ;)
Great Spacesuit!
Ive just lived ANOTHER dream through Adam!! sigh.

is that the book stand from the 1st Hell Boy behind Adam at about 6:45?
Adam, can we get a link to where to buy the silver spray for the leather?
Awesome, but really I just want an hour long tour of Adams collection of neat stuff!!!
Very Cool. Thank You for sharing your Wonderful Spacesuit replica. I think now I will also have to watch " The Right Stuff " again.
Congratulations! What a nice suit! I have freaked out when i saw!
I couldn't stop staring at Adam, that jacket is the best fucking piece of clothing I have ever seen.
also the omega speedmaster also had a specialist glass used on the face so if it shattered it wouldn't break into tiny pieces but big chunks
That zoom in at the end makes the whole video. xD
so are these the same props suits they use in them ISS videos and stuff like that
In regards to the Omega Speedmaster Adam is wearing.
Walter Schirra on Mercury-Atlas 8 was the first to take his own personal Omega Speedmaster into space. However I’m unable to find any evidence it was strapped externally onto the suit.

Awesome! I want one! You need to carry the suitcase to complete the fantasy!
07:03...The Mechery Castle was specherized ???
I liked watching Norm pass by in the reflective cabinets in the background :)
This fills me with awe.
Love seeing that side of the SHOP!
Bro... bro... time to step up to xl on the tshirts. Once again, Adam entertains.
Adam, you have so many things you actively do. How do you keep track of all the things? Do you keep a journal with ideas and things, or do you remember all the stuff?
Adam has the coolest collection of random costumes.
That was a very accurate Re-Velcroing job that Will pulled off there..
I can't help but notice the cheap Donnie Darko bunny mask in the background. Is there going to be a episode of that one? is Adam doing anything with it?
awesome job :D looks amazing and loved the facts
That Apollo era jacket is SWEET
That is one heck of a snazzy replica. Any clue where to get a Speedmaster, or a replica? I love that design, very simple and clean.
can you please make a video about the nebuchadnezzar plate on the back?
That connector is still in use as a standard circular milspec part.
Does someone know what the silver leather spray Adam used for the gloves is and where to purchase it? I could use that product in several of my own projects and would love to know what it is.
This video seems like it has higher frame rate than 30fps? Did youtube change something? Anyone else notice this?
If I had that suit, I would wear it on casual Fridays.
Where would you get a copy of the helmet? I am planning the flight suit of the astronauts from the movie Robinson Crusoe on mars and the helmet is the hardest thing to get.
Any chance we can get the name of the silver leather spray adam used for the gloves?
i have 1 important question. WHAT DID HE WANT TO DO WITH THE PENCIL O.O
Spray painted gloves, leather boots, Soviet era Mig neckring? Who cares? The original space suits were never used in a vacuum either, thank God.
It's the process of building and wearing this work of art that brings history to life.
Thank's professor Savage. Wear it proudly.
i lol his dedication to making it as accurate as possible.
Like he says, "If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing." Words to live by lol.
7:33 the briefcase that they carries was a portable air conditioning unit that wasn't taken into flight.
Adam is the coolness himself. The interviewer though, was getting on my nerves with his half assed, snobbish comments.
Do you have an example?
Noe Anguiano He is just super condescending, and treats Adam's passion as some weird out of season, crazy shit. whiteshadow3000 yeah, unfortunately. That's how will is. Borish and talks over everyone and always has to get his little quips in
whiteshadow3000 No, that's all in your head.
I get none of those vibes from him.
Johnny Bravo And I wouldn't even say this is true... people in casual social situations, especially where they're impassioned, tend to talk quickly, and often even over each other a bit.

Where could I get the replica jacket because I really want one!
Adam, what is the product with which you sprayed the gloves?
Could you possibly post a supplies list?
geez I had the EXACT same jacket minus the patches and the colour was gaudy bright orange on beige.
is it weird that i feel very happy for adam when he get a new toy to play with?
Does someone know a good alternative to this jacket? I'm trying to make my own basically without breaking the bank. I've gotten pretty close, but if you know of a really good version it would help tremendously. Gosh its so GOOD
Also, it is very trippy to watch Adam dressing into a spacesuit with "I Want Candy" playing in the background.
That jacket is amazing! does anyone know where I could get a much more budget friendly, similar, non fitted jacket?
Ground control to Major Savage! That is so cool and I too have a better appreciation for what these men and woman had to go through. Show me more space stuff! lol :)

@1:00 is that The Nebuchadnezzar Faceplate from the Matrix???
It's possible, although it's likely to be from the sequels which were shot in the Bay area rather than Australia.
He should indoor skydive with that!
Badass. Hope im rich/successful enough someday to be as creative and free as Adam.
Do it anyway. Better to fly and burn then to have never flown at all.
Adam said that the jacket is perfectly tailored to him, but he keeps doing the Piccard Maneuver….
Gordon, Richard Gordon that is was on Apollo 12.
I am thinking about making a cosplay with a full face mask, but I don’t know how to keep it from fogging up. Should I use a fan, or is there a more low-tech solution?

What material was used in the original suit?
I wish they would get rid of premium membership, i would love to watch the whole video. I am 14, I don't have the money for a premium membership.
Just looked the Apollo "Still the right stuff" jacket up. It goes for about £450 ($740) apparently. That's a lot. But man is it cool.
Oh. My. Eff. This is awesome.
man I want one of those flight jackets, but I'd have to have the sleeve pockets on the right arm since I'm a lefty.
I love this channel
Please just get adam to make litle five minute videos of trinkets hes collected over the years! i need more! also the rabbit mask in the back ground is from the cult film, Donnie Darko
Adam Savage CosPlay with the best Costumes from out of this world! That Han Solo Costume, man!
"679"
Alpha Industries sells an MA-1 Nasa flight jacket with the orange lining.
At 3:45 you can see Adams dodo bird skeleton replica in the showcase
0:39 ...Ah yes, everyone remembers Apollo 15 CMP Al "Gorman"
That Solo Costume is awesome I've always wanted to be Captain Solo for Holloween

lgerback34
Adam bought a fake Omega? That does suprise me.
From how he phrased it, I think he bought a replica specifically for this outfit. I suspect he has an authentic one, too.
what is the link to the jacket he's wearing?
Link at 1:35.
Id love to buy one of these
Those boots look like Silver Doc Martens.

Adam, How much did would it cost for me to make one of these??
