I picked up a Trek 820 Mountain Trek with a ChroMoly frame Sugino drive wheels and Shimano Altus derailures. I am about to go through it now, a full service, and upgrade the seat post to a Cane Creek Thud buster as I have lower back issues

I have been riding my 1994 Trek 820 Mountain Track for over 30 years. I won it in a contest at my orthodonist's office in my teens and have ridden the hell out of it. All terrains, all weather, extremely well built and reliable. The bike is absolutely worth it! Although my Trek is no longer ergonomically suitable for me (4 spinal surgeries: don't get old!) I am having a hard time parting with it. I hope I can find someone like you who will appreciate it for what it is!

I did a 1x9 conversion on a 1990 Fisher CR7 last year, and with the addition of some Oddmone bars, a bmx stem and a dropper post, it's been a lot of fun on tight singletrack up here in Ventura and the Santa Monica mountains.

  • @al-du6lb

I ride my old 90s mtb a ton. It's a blast. I had upgrades the bars and stem, but recently switched back to the old school long and narrow setup and it's even more fun. It's a horrible mountain bike, but makes for a great street cruiser and gravel bike.

Awesome video - that bike is a beauty! The finish is perfect. Regarding the drivetrain setup, I would have kept the 2x10 setup to provide the range you won't get with a single chainring and a 36T cassette. Lived it, and the 36T just doesn't work as a 1x - for me, anyway. 🙂
I have a Hoo Koo E Koo sitting around that needs this kind of love...
Regardless, these 26" bikes are waaaay overlooked - for now.

I have a 97 Rockhopper FS. It has the cro-moly frame. The drivetrain is STX, fork is Rockshox indy-C. I have one of those long titanium stems and the handlebar extensions. I want to keep it stock as much as possible except for seat, grips, tires. If I go one by I will use the existing cranks because it looks rad. It is a specialized crank. If I threw a raceface chainring with some anadized bolts it would be an eye catcher.

I have a 1999 Trek Single Track 820 in very condition, however id like to change out the 8 speed class for an 11 if possible, if not then a 10. Bars, shifters and break levers are upgraded, it had grip shifters and I didn’t care them. RockShox Recon Silver TK shocks replaced those original slightly curved forks. Tires have to be changed out, thinking the ones you put on this bike will work quite well.

Got an old Trek 950 from eBay and after cleaning it looks almost like NOS, that was simply very dirty. Hard to believe. Now I am tempted to do this 1x10 setup as well. Just wondering, the original cassette was 7sp, which means a narrow rear frame triangle. For 1x10 you need 135mm width, which is wider. Did you stretch the steel frame or did you simply squeeze the rear wheel into that slightly too narrow frame?
    🤔

@@LockedinCycling True…but still not a “freewheel” hub. As I would assume you know, a freewheel contains the bearings within the unit (cogs and body) which then threads as a complete unit onto the hub…very different from any of the iterations of cassettes over the years. I just thought it was a funny slip of the tongue.
