I am in this documentary and I was still shocked and saddened beyond belief when we had the survivors premiere last night. I didn't think I had any tears left until I saw myself on the screen baring my soul for the world to see, but I did. Seeing newspaper articles from 1923 about pedophiles in the Boy Scouts threw me for a loop. 100 years of denial isn't a very good look for such a revered institution. Kudos to Brian Knappenberger, Sabrina Parke and the whole production team for making such a compelling documentary. I just wish the last 45 years of my life could have been different. 96 days clean and sober today, despite the Boy Scouts of America.

My heart breaks for these boys that were abused. My son wanted to be a cub scout but there were no scout leaders. My husband worked irregular shifts and lots of overtime, so I, his mom, volunteered. I was shocked at the number of parents that dropped their kids off with me, a total stranger to them, with no questions asked except when to pick them up.. Although invited to stay, and I sure could have used the help, except for one other mom, I got no takers. I did this for one year and it was a truly rewarding experience for me. My son developed other interests and so his cub scouting and mine ended. Now I am so glad I was there to watch over him and all the other boys! Parents, no matter what, please be more involved in your kids lives. You will never regret the time you spend with them.

Thanks for your service and support. I helped rebuild a cub program from 6 families to over 50. We set the bar high and got a lot of volunteers from the parents. Great support and a great program. If the BSA policies are followed it is virtually impossible for any abuse to happen but as you noted, many parents don't help, just drop kids off and that is not responsible parenting. Sad to see a great program be attacked by outsiders. There is a negative element in our society that seeks to attach itself to youth programs. The BSA, in my experience, has done a better than average job of policing itself. Until recently there were no national background checks and even local checks left a lot to be desired. The BSA motto: Do Your Best, is what they tried to do but you can't keep 100% of those people out. So they crucify the BSA instead of placing the blame on the abusers...

I would suggest that the brave victims find new lawyers and sue the abusers and their estates directly. They are the ones that abused the trust of kids, parents, sponsors and the BSA. Screw those overpaid lawyers and get compensation to the victims.

Yes our son as well and we were very involved with our church (not LDS) Troop in the early 90’s. The only things that gave us red flags was when we as leaders went to District events where we saw the money operation of BSA and the increasing bend to culture and less AMERICAN tradition coming from the top. Here in Texas, national headquarters so we saw pretty early something was not right. The truth of a lot must be revealed before there can be real healing. They did not have the safety measures in place even back then because they were desperate for volunteers, basically. There are always more boys than PARENTS willing to volunteer.

If they don't have a rigorous background check of the adults that will be around your child, don't send them! Also be weary of just dropping your kids off to just anybody. Do your due diligence to protect your child and the environments they are in.

Part of BSA youth protection (currently in place) is that no adult should be alone with a Scout, ever. Two adults at a minimum are required at all times. Background checks are fine, but don't catch paedophiles without records. They can abuse for years before being caught. As important as background checks is the youth protection plan that the adults are trained on and required to follow. I can think of many youth organizations (little league, school, musical instrument instructors, after school programs of all kinds, religious programs) that have nothing in place. Zero. Remember, the CDC reports that about 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys in the United States experience child sexual abuse! You've made a good point...parents be diligent. Don't just drop your kids off, get involved. By the way, there have been 110 million scouts since it started in 1910. Roughly 82k of those have come forward as abused. Surely that number is higher as some have passed away a long time ago. However, that’s roughly 1 in 1300 Scouts. It’s terribly tragic that sexual abuse exists and the goal should be none at all. Everyone agrees on that.

How is it there's never anyone in the room who anticipates the inevitable eventuality of the truth coming out and the cover up looking just as bad if not worse than the initial offense? But over and over again you see companies and organizations trying to cover up what obviously eventually came out anyway: Boeing, the Vatican, JW, LDS, Purdue Pharma, etc... They all end the same way, with the truth still coming out. The shame of this whole thing is that this crime was committed by people long ago and none of them are suffering for this. The people that are suffering are the kids today that are losing their camps and having their organization destroyed. The current generation of leaders in BSA are working hard to create a safe place for kids. I know this is true because I am a scoutmaster and we are doing background checks and enforcing strict rules and oversight to keep these horrible monsters away from our kids. I haven't watched this documentary yet, but I hope it is fair and shows the massive good that BSA has done for this world. This new generation has done good work to build a better safer organization. I have been involved with the scouts for 20+ years of my life and I have never seen any of the negative side portrayed here, I have only seen the huge impact it has had in helping kids grow into amazing leaders and awesome citizens.

kinda looks bad when you comment this under a trailer with a subject matter like this.
IDK what to think about American scouting really, since I'm from Europe, and although i do know two people that did scouting as kids. I'm pretty sure it operates a whole different way than it does over there. Mostly just parents or previous gen of scouts volunteering over here most of the time probably.
What i don't get tough is these comments talking like scouting is some sort of way of life. I also saw a comment stating about learning morals in scouting. Like he could not learn some simple morals if he never became a boy scout or something lol. I always saw it as a place where kids go for the weekend or vacation if there parents where busy with work, or not being home for a while and didn't want to leave there kid alone home for a long period of time.
I once did a scouting camp, and it really was not that fun most of the time. It was basically just camping with other kids with forced activities to keep you busy. I don't want to be constantly pushed into activities that feel like work when i was trying to relax in my vacation as a kid, and it's still that way today. It just isn't for me.
IDK if these people have been brainwashed into thinking they could not learn basic survival skills, or morals outside of scouting. You can also just learn stuff like that with friends when playing outside as a kid, or by going camping with your friends, family, or family friends. But i know some people don't have those options available.

I am a proud Eagle Scout. It is very tragic that this organization did this. My heart is deeply saddened, and I am very sympathetic for the victims! I personally never experienced any kind of abuse, but then again, my parents were very much involved in my cub scout pack, and eventually, my troop.
My three sons are all Eagles. The council they were in was very proactive about the abuse, and it was talked about through all of the adult leadership training and also presented to the scouts themselves. We all were made aware of what is and what to do about it if we saw it or the boys experienced it and needed to tell an adult.
The organization has its flaws and problems, but I had a great experience and learned some lifelong skills I still use today. My sons didn't have quite the same positive experience because the troop they were in was always struggling to retain adult leaders and also get other parents involved. Unfortunately, Boy Scouts of America became Baybysitters of America!

@@Daymariee as a current Eagle Scout and former employee at a national camp, I very much disagree that parents should keep their kids away from the organization. The sheer amount of training and various amount of protections we have now for scouts is aguably better than any school institution or any where else. No adult can be alone with a scout, there always has to be two adults. Youth and Adults use separate bathrooms. We are notified to make sure adults are not violating guidelines or they are kicked out of the camp. Our "Youth Protection Training" is used industry wide. A few points this doc said in this trailer made me question their purpose or if the presenters are telling the full truth. Also if your immediate response is regarding my motive, I am 20 years old and just have a love for the movement and camps.

This movie is ridiculous in their take that H O M O S E X U A L S are not PDFIles. Yes DUDE! THEY ARE. Literally older men taking advantage of Young Boys. 🤦 The movie was fine up until they started starting saying the Older Men Taking Advantage of the Young Boys were straight. WHAT

It just gets me angry that reputation and image is put in front of the lives of children. These boys came in wanting to be part of something great. In return, their lives were ruined in the most horrific way possible. It’s infuriating!

Yes. They were a giant part of the numbers of troops. They had tremendous influence in the organization (I was told this) because of it. If LDS had ever pulled out, it would have been disastrous financially.

My scout troop was not like this…. I guess I was lucky any camping trips we did they always allowed our dads to go and my dad went every time with me… I had the best experience with my friends and had great bonding time with my father… I have two boys that I want them to experience the fun I had… but now I’m worried maybe I’ll just have to make my own scout troop now..

The organization is complicit and reactionary. If it wasn’t for the law suits, this would have continued. The organization transferred responsibility to the units. The units were run by part time adult volunteers. Give me a break. To the core, they are unapologetic

You should learn about the current Youth Protection Program before judging TODAYS Scouts. Every child, every parent, every leader must take training on how to identify, prevent, and report signs and patterns that lead up to abusive behavior by anyone. I'm pretty sure kids would be safer today in a Scout group than they are in their own home, where statistically, most abuse takes place. Not YOUR home, of course.

I hate to be the ants at the picnic. We HAD the same exact spin about training, that everyone had to have a background check before being allowed as a Scoutmaster or Asst Scoutmaster, etc. back in the 90’s.

@@rong1924The thing is, the trust in the Boy Scouts has eroded. There needs to be some outside oversight by law enforcement or something because this organization failed these children and tried to cover up the abuse for decades I don't see how they be trusted to govern themselves at this point

Growing up in Haïti, my experience in the Girl Scouts was nothing, but amazing! Watching this documentary was an eye opener on how the organization tried to seal the truth from the public. These men had their childhood stolen from them. I'm glad they finally found the courage to come forward. To the ones still suffering in silence, I am sorry. May you find a way to take the first step forward. Wishing you healing. 🖤🤍
