I first drove one during a crowded convention in Chicago and it felt perfectly at home getting around the streets, shockingly comfortable and adept. That might be the only compliment I can pay the line for driving, but it really does seem like the ideal city car.

My wife just bought a red Prius Prime Premium 2019 even after I suggested that I would add 10k for her to buy a Tesla... Dam it! ;) She is Japanese and did not want to go in a unfamiliar territory... She trusts Toyota. I do too as I have a Sienna 2007 and a 2001 before that (300 miles with it). But electric is the way to go. Anyway, I have driven it, studied it and I am impressed big time. This is not the old Prius, better looking and it is powerful in Power mode. I wasn't brainwashed by the general opinion on the Prius so I looked at it with a fresh perspective. I told my wife to use the engine as much as possible so the gas engine break-in in is done faster, otherwise it will take forever... I can't go with the mileages because this car is running back and forth on EV when driving on the hybrid mode. So I go with the gas tank level to evaluate the mileage done with the gas engine. When it will have half tank left (around 5 gallons), the break-in time will be done. She is at 2/3 of the tank now with 300 miles done.... This hybrid drive system is so efficient, it is unbelievable! After she is done with the engine break-in, I will tweak it to still improve its mileage per gallon. The change of oil is done at every 10k miles since the gas engine is running less often. She will use the EV mode to go back and forth to work, which is below the 25 miles EV mode limit. Then she will plug the car in for the night charging time (charging 5 miles per hour). I told her to fill the tank from 1 quarter to half otherwise the gas will go weak sitting so long in the tank when driving in EV mode all the time during the week ;). This car can drive 600 miles with a full tank and full battery on a freeway (60 mpg). But normal driving in city on hybrid mode, you can go from 85 to 100 mpg depending on how much you use the EV mode. The battery charges itself when releasing the accelerator and when breaking softly. The engine can also charge the battery under some conditions (you can force it too). The cost equivalent in gas (electricity cost) of using only EV is, I guess, around 135 mpg (but I will test this). I am really impressed with this car. I still prefer a Tesla obviously but it is 10K more (now 12k more according to yesterday updated price that will include the autopilot). For what my wife is using it for, it is practically an EV car and she has the Toyota warranty and reliability and additional perks from a Japanese-owned car dealer (and yes the Japanese-owned car dealers in USA serving the Japanese community are different- I felt it- that's the Japanese culture for you). I live near LA.

These people never lived in a dense traffic jammed city. In NYC prius is a godsend, because during rush hours when you're standing still you consume no gas. MPGs rise on consistent highway speeds but get destroyed in traffic.
