I am so happy I want back into the Adam Gibbs archives, all the stuff 3-4 years back. I too live in the PNW, central cascades for me. There is so much beauty out my back door. and I’ve struggled with the chaos that is the forest, and have at times been jealous of those Englishpeople with their seemingly manicured plantation woodlands. I’m going back out again this weekend with eyes wide open as to what the forest offers all of us. Thank you!
I like this video and how you showed the different compositions of the waterfall. It’s helpful to see your thought process. You should do it often showing us the different compositions and the one the works best.
Thanks, Francis! I try to showcase all of the images, problem is that sometimes the video work gets in the way of taking images so I don’t record it. Other times I record it but the image doesn’t end up working so I don’t include it in the final video, see my dilemma, haha.
I don't what I like more, your beautiful aerial footage and presentation or your beautiful images. Not forgetting your insights on how to approach creating images that have impact.

Adam Gibbs I actually did do the short canoe trip to the Widgeon campground for a weekend with my now wife on one of our first dates. I’ve never been up to the lake though. What’s it like?

Adam, watching one of your videos is like experiencing a major motion picture! The story telling, the mood and the feeling are all tops. The intro was stirring, and of course the photos incredible. Always look forward to your films.

Those are pretty awesome waterfalls. Great images. I'm convinced you can't really plan for lighting. It is just being fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. Seems when I go out expecting great light it isn't, and when I am just out to be out, I luck up on it. And you are right, the more I do it, the better I get in poor light. I love my Muck boots.

As always, great video, Adam. Most light is worthy, we just need to pick our subjects to suit it and water certainly works in the light you had. I just purchased those same boots to replace my 15 year old Muck Hoser pair which have performed well enough but don't offer the kind of support the Arctic Sport does. I chuckled, just a tiny bit, as I watched you carefully and cautiously clamber on those wet rocks just as I do. Not as nimble or sure-footed as I once was. Hope you got back there the following day to enjoy the fog.

That's such a powerful video Adam it really took my breath away. The production was crisp and strong, technically great and all of the good stuff that is about the craft of film making, but I want to pay tribute to the concept - to make this from scratch takes real artistic and creative talent and you have it in spades Adam. Great video, I know nothing at all about videography, but the production looked amazing! Especially liked the drone work and the alternative crops of the first image. Superb images, you have a great way of explaining your thought processes in a logical that makes perfect sense and isn’t over complicated. I also like that you avoid the obsession to over expose your water so it loses all definition. There’s a time and place for everything, and I think those 'silky' water shots look wrong over cascades where the water is extremely active in several directions at once. You certainly have some amazing trees and ancient woodland over there and you certainly did the Douglas Fir proud with your image. You wellies look great, as much hard wearing boot as they are galoshes, your van also looks good and I see you have your badges on it. Everything was perfect for the video, very well done indeed.

Such stunning images Adam. Really enjoyed the intro piece, really highlighted some of the goals of photographing waterfalls by capturing smaller areas rather than the whole. As it's almost "waterfall season" here in Upstate NY, I've been online searching for boots and will check out the Mucks (nothing better than a good recommendation!). Great tips as always - really like the long lens & elevation tip with the waterfall shelf. As always, much learned and always appreciate all the work and effort it takes to create your contributions. Hello Adam, once again and consistently you manage to get magnificent still and drone images. Muck Boots are excellent and much favoured by wildfowlers and the like and to keep your feet warm in cold waters. There were a few times that I was concerned for you when you were scrambling over the rocks amongst the falls and strongly felt that you should use walking poles. It only takes one bad fall and you could be out of action for months and the complications of your hard-earned fitness collapsing. Again my grateful thanks for sharing your skills and entertaining vlogs and sound advice. Best regards...

That is one of the most photogenic waterfalls I’ve seen Adam, you could spend days there shooting different compositions couldn’t you? Stunning images as ever and great drone footage too. You don’t mention how you got on with the new boots.

Yes all good the main falls, surrounding trails and lower section.... very peaceful this time of year. Was also at Stamp River last week which of course has allot of volume now but great for moving water shots. How's the reno's going?
Sorry Adam to answer you question....I prefer Englishmen falls but both are wonderful. I have family living on Nanaimo River with stairway access to the river and some amazing private pools and small step type falls. When the river drops I'm looking forward to trying some of your water photography methods there.
I wish I could scramble on the rocks like you do. I am a bit of a klutz and the older I get the better the chance of a fall. Had that experience in Mosaic Gorge at Death Valley a week or so back. Lovely images and great video as always. I do like the composition within a composition thing you did in the beginning of the video.

But for me that thing (although being good advise) kind of prevents me to learn my gear and important things about composition so you would be able to take good photos. Enjoyed this Adam... I'm not completely sure but it seemed the light wasn't cooperating for you on the waterfall shots, but I appreciate how you worked the scene in either case... The drone footage really was spot on, very well done... Nice composition of the douglas fir... I'm glad I am not the only " tree nut " out there! Cheers, Bill! Yes, unfortunately, more times than not the light is just not on my side so you have to try and make it work for you. If I just took images when the light was perfect I'd never take any images.

But also ,Have said this before and not doubt will say it again , your vlogs are so underrated and under exposed on you tube it’s not funny .. from your photography and explanations of the compositions to the production of the vlogs with the captivating b roll and music these are some of the best on offer on this platform .. New to your channel, but like your style. The videography was really good on this video. I love waterfalls and the way that you photograph them is amazing. I'm still getting to grips with slow shutter speeds to get the dreamy look, never quite sure how long the exposure should be. Could I put forward one suggestion, could you please put the camera settings on or next to your photographs?

So how are the boots? Love the way you describe what you are seeing, and the light as you film, I.e. light around the fall and reflections or light falling on Douglas fir. I seem so sub conscious compared to you! I tend to shoot first and ask questions latter.... also loved the display of different crops of scene. you are an inspiration.
Your Posts are always well done and inspiring even this time of year as we enjoy watching them! I'd really like to learn how you did your INTRO with the black mask effect if you have the time :) Looks like we're in for an early spring on the Island as the buds are full. Thanks, Richard! I use Final Cut Pro for video editing. The images have just been trimmed and then I used key frames and different trims to sync with the music, quite easy once I figured it out.

To be honest....I found those parts hard to watch. Sorry....just not my thing I guess....too "Artsy" maybe? Otherwise, I enjoyed as usual. ....and I thought of them as moving frames.

Thanks, Tyler! It is a new Manfrotto head. I purchased a video head so that I could pan around with some smooth control. It seems like a good head but a beast to carry and not great for photography as the levelling is minimal.
I ride my motorcycle offroad up and down any logging road i can find all over the island. Its influenced me to get my first camera- canon 70d/18-135mm stm kit, tripod etc.(still waiting for delivery) and possibly a sigma 10-20. If i only had a clue as to take a proper photo, such wasted hidden beauty for me to photograph... maybe a course is necessary.

Amazing intro and great images as usual. Ok spill the beans, how did you make the opening scene. Is is just cropping with various transitions applied? Your videos are 10 notches above everyone elses!
It was quite easy, I just trimmed the images and added a key frame to each beat of the music. With each beat I changed the trim of the image. I’m still learning How to use Final Cut Pro and this seemed like a neat thing to try. Thanks, Brian!

I can recommend step-in crampons in mountain boots for those wet rocks Adam. They also raise your boots an inch or so above the water level.

Hello Adam, once again and consistently you manage to get magnificent still and drone images. Muck Boots are excellent and much favoured by wildfowlers and the like and to keep your feet warm in cold waters. There were a few times that I was concerned for you when you were scrambling over the rocks amongst the falls and strongly felt that you should use walking poles. It only takes one bad fall and you could be out of action for months and the complications of your hard-earned fitness collapsing. Again my grateful thanks for sharing your skills and entertaining vlogs and sound advice. Best regards...
Thanks, Allan! Ah it’s all good, not quite as nimble as I used to be. In all honesty poles are great and I use them often but not easy to use when my hands are full of photo gear. I appreciate the concern though, :-)
That is one of the most photogenic waterfalls I’ve seen Adam, you could spend days there shooting different compositions couldn’t you? Stunning images as ever and great drone footage too. You don’t mention how you got on with the new boots.

Yes all good the main falls, surrounding trails and lower section.... very peaceful this time of year. Was also at Stamp River last week which of course has allot of volume now but great for moving water shots. How's the reno's going?
Sorry Adam to answer you question....I prefer Englishmen falls but both are wonderful. I have family living on Nanaimo River with stairway access to the river and some amazing private pools and small step type falls. When the river drops I'm looking forward to trying some of your water photography methods there.
I wish I could scramble on the rocks like you do. I am a bit of a klutz and the older I get the better the chance of a fall. Had that experience in Mosaic Gorge at Death Valley a week or so back. Lovely images and great video as always. I do like the composition within a composition thing you did in the beginning of the video.

No! Bone dry most of the winter. The week was wonderful, thawing out from NY winter. Leaving for Florida on Thursday.

For me i feel that i have watched too much videos where they say try to take shots that count and so on. But for me that thing (although being good advise) kind of prevents me to learn my gear and important things about composition so you would be able to take good photos.

Enjoyed this Adam... I'm not completely sure but it seemed the light wasn't cooperating for you on the waterfall shots, but I appreciate how you worked the scene in either case... The drone footage really was spot on, very well done... Nice composition of the douglas fir... I'm glad I am not the only " tree nut " out there!

Cheers, Bill! Yes, unfortunately, more times than not the light is just not on my side so you have to try and make it work for you. If I just took images when the light was perfect I'd never take any images.

New to your channel, but like your style. The videography was really good on this video. I love waterfalls and the way that you photograph them is amazing. I'm still getting to grips with slow shutter speeds to get the dreamy look, never quite sure how long the exposure should be. Could I put forward one suggestion, could you please put the camera settings on or next to your photographs?

So how are the boots? Love the way you describe what you are seeing, and the light as you film, I.e. light around the fall and reflections or light falling on Douglas fir. I seem so sub conscious compared to you! I tend to shoot first and ask questions latter.... also loved the display of different crops of scene. you are an inspiration.
The jury is still out Savage, so far they seem to be pretty good on slippery rocks. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks, Richard! I use Final Cut Pro for video editing. The images have just been trimmed and then I used key frames and different trims to sync with the music, quite easy once I figured it out.
Loved the video. Especially the changing aspect ratios while viewing the intro video and when reviewing your photos. I am sure “changing aspect ratio” is not the proper term but I hope you get my meaning. Best vlog yet. Thanks.

You can do pretty much anything with footage or images in Final Cut Pro. I'm just experimenting with different ways to present images, thanks again.

Thanks, Tyler! It is a new Manfrotto head. I purchased a video head so that I could pan around with some smooth control. It seems like a good head but a beast to carry and not great for photography as the levelling is minimal.
I ride my motorcycle offroad up and down any logging road i can find all over the island. Its influenced me to get my first camera- canon 70d/18-135mm stm kit, tripod etc.(still waiting for delivery) and possibly a sigma 10-20. If i only had a clue as to take a proper photo, such wasted hidden beauty for me to photograph... maybe a course is necessary.

Amazing intro and great images as usual. Ok spill the beans, how did you make the opening scene. Is is just cropping with various transitions applied? Your videos are 10 notches above everyone elses!
It was quite easy, I just trimmed the images and added a key frame to each beat of the music. With each beat I changed the trim of the image. I’m still learning How to use Final Cut Pro and this seemed like a neat thing to try. Thanks, Brian!

I love your videos, especially when you are with Gavin, and Heaton. I was wondering if you always trust the meter in your camera, or do you use an external light meter like the Sekonic L758?
I found the DSLR meter to work great. In my film days I used to use a Pentax spot meter.

Ah, g'day mate. Like your videos. But is there any particular reason you're using a video head on that tripod?

Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't have wanted a nice sunny day for that scene at 8:00. The natural desaturation added a lot of drama IMO.
Perhaps I wasn't clear on that point. Youre absolutely right, sunny conditions wouldn't work so well. It is nice to get some directional light such as on a light, overcast day. I was happy with the results that I got. Thanks, Eric!
