This is not gonna be your typical Sweet Home Alabama guitar lesson! In these video lessons I am gonna not only break every section of the song down note-for-note, but for any of you brave guitarists out there I am also gonna teach you how to play the piano solo on the guitar! :D
Needless to say, "Sweet Home Alabama" needs no introduction. It is probably one the of the top 5 most famous songs of all-time.
In the first video below I will demonstrate how to play all of the intro, chords and rhythm guitar parts that are so iconic for the entire song. There are some really cool guitar licks thrown within that chord work so that video alone might keep you busy for a while.
The second video begins the solo marathon. In it I while tackle the first short but sweet guitar solo. There are some tasty licks in this one so don't overlook it! In fact, learning this solo may serve as a nice warm-up for the following video lessons.
In the third lesson video I will tackle the main solo note-for-note. It actually isn't that difficult to understand how to play. Just simply piece it together phrase by phrase like I teach it in the video. I will also show you how I am picking select sections in order to help you be able to get it up to speed easier.
This would definitely be considered that main guitar solo in the song and it has just a little bit of everything in it including large bends, fast legato licks, rapid shifts, string crossing licks, slides and more.
In the final video we will finally come to what I feel is the ultimate climax to this lesson series, a full note-for-note transcription of the piano solo!
Most fast musical pieces that are transcribed from piano to guitar can be very difficult to play and this piano solo that ends "Sweet Home Alabama" is no different.
I perform it at the beginning of the video and you will see that it requires lots of quick hammer-ons, hybrid picking, extremely quick shifts and large stretches. It definitely isn't for the faint of heart but will make a great challenge for most advanced players.
The piano solo is very musical and easy to kind of hum so getting the sound of it in your ears shouldn't be very difficult. Once again, break this solo down phrase by phrase like I teach it in the lesson. There are many great technical exercises located within each phrase.
Hopefully you will be able to master those piano licks on the guitar and then thrown them into your own improvisations for some fresh sounding licks.
Ok I am gonna shut up and let your guys watch the videos. Hope you come out on the other side unscathed!! :)
Carl...
Carl, you’ve got me playing things I never ever dreamed I would be playing. I am so thankful for everyone of your lessons.👍❤️🎸
Nice pfp
I feel that man it all looked so complicated when I was barely starting and I hated trying to learn songs through UA-cam but the more i tried it the easier it became and now I prefer UA-cam videos over tab. Carl is one of the best teachers on here.
I prefer the videos over tabs too. Tabs just feel like very basic information, to really get the technique you need a good teacher.
@@John-- agree 100% !
Thanks! Love your work, Carl. And your tone is peerless.
Carl, your the best bro. Everytime I need to learn a song and I see you have a tutorial I immediately pick yours. I never have to search any further. Thank You
Agreed. I was looking at More Than Words and his video was fantastic for it.
You’re ^
same hes always my first choice because its always so damn accurate
SOMEONE WHO TEACHES IT CORRECTLY
he the real deal dude
totally agree...love this.
Its wrong 😂😂😂
asmdnfaujwd aksdincaiwo that what i mean
Nope
Jesus christ I was trying to learn this song from a tab for like a month and i didn't learn even a quarter as much as I did watching this thing for about a half an hour. Thank you man
What tab?
@@RichardAllenCramer probably from some website
Have a playing guitar for about three years I’m in my mid-50s and yeah I’ve learned tabs but just watching videos by this guy or Marty Schwartz or somebody else way way faster and way more efficient and frankly learn how to play it correctly
I've seen many how-to-play videos of this song, but none of them sounded like the recording. Thanks for yours which seems to be much better.
This tutorial taught me that I need more than 0.5cm's between each string, AND how to play the most legendary guitar intro of all time, so thans, carl.
What position is this played in on a Strat… I’m thinking position 4 but it looks like he’s using 5? I did see Rhett on UA-cam play the exact Strat Ed King used to record the song and he said position 4 was probably it. I have a new Player Plus Strat and they added some different pickup options with the push/pull selector so I’m not sure if those would be useful. I’m a new player and not very good but I learned the Santeria solo in about a week, but even though this is more difficult I think this I could do it eventually… plus this is the correct version he plays. A lot of people play the wrong one on UA-cam but this guy’s pretty much always on point and tries to stay original with it
Edit: Why did you say you need more than .5cm to play this… my Strat is pretty amazing for MIM and the fret action is pretty low but it feels good to me stock. Does it affect the playability?
briliant tutorial dude.
I'm a rhythm guitarist required to step up for lead duties and this is one song I have a shot at getting right thanks to your clear lesson. Cheers :D
I have been trying to play this song for a few years now. It just never sounded right to me. After watching the first 2 minutes I now finally know why. I was leaving out a note here and there. I can finally play it RIGHT! I can't wait to learn the whole song now and, not just the opening. Thanks so very much!
I think you have to be in the top 10 of tutors online Carl, I can't fault your tutorials and teaching style or your musicality! I'm playing all of the parts to the steely Dan songs we do since losing our lead guitarist. because of you. Thank you Carl. You are a star!
Your lessons are really great. What separates your videos from most others is how that you move slowly and precisely, explaining them all along the way. Most guitarists will appreciate the time and effort you put into every video I have personally seen you put out. Thank you for all that you do. Great work!
When you play the bass notes before the arpeggios palm mute it sounds really good
The best detail oriented guitar lessons I've found for refreshers! Awesome! Thank You !
This is the best lesson for this song.I have watched others who
play it differentlyor they have distortion but you play it exactly right & nailed the tone also. Good job man. 👍
Thanks for watching John!
Just started learning this. Thank you Carl for a very accurate lesson! Love this lesson 👍👍❤️❤️🎸🎸
wait, i noticed that i miss this guy when i listen to other guitar lessons... i can understand in an only single watching. best one ever!
I'll second what everyone else says....BEST video for this song
I don't subscribe to many channels but I have to yours. I have watched a few of your videos and have learned a lot. After picking up the guitar again after 10 years, I am getting the rust out. Thanks for the videos. I like how most of your videos teach the entire song not just a riff.
Your guitar tutorials are always liiiiiiiittttt🔥🔥🔥
Thank you so much for producing and sharing these master pieces ♥️🙏
My sister loves this song 💥

I Go back and look at the albums. Man they were just kids who came up with the coolest fills and songs. Incredible
Best guitar teacher on UA-cam! Marty music is ludicrous.
pantera Addict why the hate on Marty? Different styles of teaching for different players. It’s all good.
i think marty is better
perfect tutorial. ..Straight into it..no jibba jabba...clever bloke.
Very precise lesson. Best on YT probably.
Thank you 🙏 my friend! Thanks to you I’m learning this beautiful classic rock!! Blessings!!

Thanks dude, I’ve been trying to learn this forever!
Quick and to the point! Picked up a lot of things I missed in my playing
Thanks for all your awesome lessons Carl. I've improved so much learning from you. You are truly gifted as a teacher. Would you ever consider any New York Dolls tunes? I know they're not massively popular but JT has to be one of my favourite players. Keep up the awesome work dude 🤘🏻🎶🎶🎶🎸
Still my fav guitar youtuber, thanks for another great tutorial!
this is hands down the best lesson I've ever had... *bows down* You sir, are an epic player, a hero!
Love the way the chorus rhythm changes feel midway through. Must have been Gary Rossington on this part.
Let's just recognize that Carl is "The Man". I subscribe to his Patreon account. It's the least I could do.
Thank you so much, i rediscovered playing the guitar thanks to you
carl, u are a great teacher! i love your videos bc they are always technically correct. i'm so OCD i hate when guys do too many shortcuts. i know sometimes they ARE warranted though.....thx for the videos.
Yes - CORRECTLY taught! The UNIQUE thing about Lynyrd Skynyrd was that they took fairly common chord progressions and embellished them with unique fills and phrases . And this is not so much an "easy" song to nail down .... it's the nuances you have to get right to make it sound close to the original - Carl has it down. If yu don't have those little idiosyncrasies that everyone's ear catches ....it just sounds like the avg. beginner/intermediate player playing . Lynyrd Skynyrd was a once in a lifetime band ...it was the chemistry of the people involved - notably the 3 mainstays : Ronnie, Allen & Gary - that gave the band it's "sound" . They were a GREAT band , and always will be a CLASSIC.
WOW! I finally learned the correct way to play it. Thank You!!!
A good teacher and a nice person !
Love the sound of your guitar!
Fabulous lesson Carl.
I'm working on the intro and this will really help.
Great job as usual...clear understandable and sounds perfect
you are a totally awesome teacher and guitar player. thanks
I need to hard to try...thanks master🙏
Thank you so much. I love this song and could only get it to mildly sound right.
Thank you sooo much because I couldn’t get the part with the 789 part thank you so much
Very helpful as always. Love your videos. Thanks!
This guy is the best guitar teacher!!!!!!!
very good lesson right there. I subscribed because I like when people teach the songs right. Great job.
Holy crap!!! You Sir really nailed it!!! 😲😲😲
Very correct teaching on this . Thanks
Thank you so much for the guitar lessons I’m enjoying it so much now I’m pretty much better at it
Way better than the lesson from GuitarJamz
Paul Kreymborg Agree
Paul Kreymborg Better than Justin Sandercoe too.
Marty from GuitarJamz is bad but I mean bad at playing and teaching guitar
HIs fingers are too fat to see the chords
Or Marty
old timer coming back to guitar, awesome demo
Carl, thanks a million for another great lesson!
I have a question, I hope you can help 😊
I’ve been listening to the original recording and I cannot hear the 3-0-3 pattern on the A and E strings at the intro riff. Even slowing down the recording I don’t get it.
It could easily be my lack of ear training, or maybe that’s present on some versions only.
I wasn't sure I heard it either from memory but It's pretty audible in this recording around the 0:03s and 0:05s mark: ua-cam.com/video/ye5BuYf8q4o/v-deo.html.
Best lesson ever for this.
wow very good tutorial of a great song
Carl,you the best mate.Thanks
Carl brown your my favourite guitar teacher....
Wow I have been playing that wrong for so long. Thanks Carl! Easy lesson
A tab of the tutorial would be reaaally great :) for newbies
and when you play the G note on the E string before the picking pattern thing play the g chord after it its so nice
You are realy, realy the best. Thank You so much!
Couple of requests. How about Peaceful Easy Feeling by the Eagles. The chords are pretty easy but the fills and solo I can't quite figure, particularly the lead just after the intro chords. The other one which might be tricky is When Doves Cry by Prince. Fantastic intro, although not sure I can play that fast :( Thanks
Great video! Best lesson for this song on YT!
Great lesson. Thank you!!
Great lesson..spot on and easy to follow!!!!
Thanks Carl...Much appreciated...always wanted to learn this song properly !!!
OUTSTANDING CARL.. Could you by any chance do the same for "THAT SMELL" I sure would appreciate it . as I am trying to learn all of the Solos . for all the Skynyrd songs. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK .. Later A J

Carl I have to ask, do you have some original stuff you've written? Because I really like your channel and would be really keen to hear it.
You're videos are great, guess i learned more than half of the songs i can play from your vids. Can you please make a tutorial for Gimme Three Steps and On The Hunt?
