When I was a kid, my grandmother on a rural farm cooked the most delicious meals in these potjies, she had difrent sizes...im now in my middle ages and own 3 of my own, I love making potjie dishes!! I'm so glad that you took some true African tradition with you and that you enjoy it so much!!
Very good attempt, not bad at all. Only advice I'd give is the following: -coat the meat in some flour before browning. It makes it brown better and also helps thicken the sauce later - put less stock in in the beginning. Liquid doesn't need to cover the meat all the way. Remember that all the veggies give off liquid too. Cheers, thanks for the vid.
Good post, nice to see our ‘cuisine’ taking root in other cultures😉 2 Things - you need to clean and possibly re-season your pot, I know some folk say it adds flavour but that’s not a good way to start. Then you need to dial back the liquids and allow the slow, natural, extraction of all those wonderful veggies to infuse your meal. Look after those pots, and they’ll look after you for years to come!
Hey mate great vid! I too first encountered a Potjie when I was hunting in the Limpopo area, a few years back. I’ve finally brought my own one and looking forward to getting it into action with some of NZ’s wild game 😎
Oh man I learn something new with potjies every time I watch a clip. In this case it was the value of more than one potjie. Thank you for the demonstration. Food looks divine. Take care and God Bless. 💖
"Potjie" actually means "small pot" which it is not, at least not compared to usual kitchen-pots. In Afrikaans, sometimes, the diminutive term is added to something, becomes a term of affection or endearment to something that holds some sentimental attachment. Many men in South Africa would call their wives "Bokkie" which is a diminutive word to describe a small buck, usually female, but through the use of affection, it has an endearing quality. She could be 6"4' and still be called "bokkie". Similar, but not quite, to call the largest person in a group "Tiny".
Great video, a great pot. I can't wait to get one. Have you tried turning it on its side to make a small oven? I want to try making a chicken like that ...
You make it like you like it, bit too much liquid for my taste, but then we make it like we like it! When I make potjie I place the dumpling dough on top of the potjie contents, when done we have a feast!
@@UnderTheHoodBBQ Looking forward to June 5th.... I cannot for the life of me master the Brisket! Pork ribs ✅ beef ribs ✅ boston butt ✅ brisket ❌ I need your help 🤣👍
A little bit too souserig, but it still looks lekker. Next time you make a potjie though, see if you can find some samp (stampmielies in Afrikaans). Much better than rice.
great too see South African cooking being shared across the world !
Oh yeah, we love it cheers!
Brilliant. Just picked up my first Potjie pot and ready to start cooking (Ohio).
Cheers Geoff. I'll bet that will be awesome!! Dave

Made this a few weeks ago on my gas stove. I have South African coworkers that gave me some tips as well. Really like how it turned out! 😊
It's beautiful food hey!

Awesome mate! Yes it was certainly a revelation. It was like tasting culture and history all in the one mouthful. Dave

Thanks Derick! That’s awesome mate. Having the second potjie was definitely awesome!

Ridiculously excellent! I'd inhale that like it was going out of fashion. Nicely done!
Thank you so much 🙏. We love the celebration of food, family and friends
Potjie is awesome, thanks for sharing this. You gave me some ideas for some of my future video’s.
Oh yo that's awesome. Thanks so much! Dave
Good to see that our SA potjie made it all the way to NZ. I made a Oxtail potjie last weekend. Here in the EU they call it a Dutch oven 😂.
Beautiful! That oxtail is delicious.
I am an ex South African living in Auckland and you did very well. Love the passion. Thanks for sharing
Oh man!! Thanks so much Daren. Hopefully it gave you a few feels of home.

Oh brilliant! Appreciate the interpretation on this. Makes total sense now. Excuse this Kiwi take on it.
Great video, a great pot. I can't wait to get one.

Thanks @waynethebarber1095 cooking with the poike is great fun! Haven't tried using it on it's side but why not!

Lovely!! And yes we went a bit hard on the liquids haha, but hey there's always next time.
If I could like it twice I would! Great job brother! Remember…. Ons gaan nou braai (we will braai soon) 😜
Hahaha yes sir!! But first let’s just have a little drink.
@@UnderTheHoodBBQ you bet!
Love it, well done!

Must have been an amazing experience hunting over there. I'm sure ya made their day smashing the raw liver. Food looks amazing too guys epic ❤👊
Thanks Dave. Yeah it was unreal. I could tell you some stories
Baie lekker man!
Baie lekker like a fire cracker!
Thats awesome!! You just needed to finish of with a Melktert or peppermint crisp for dessert 🤤
Thanks mate! And yes that is totally true.

We’ll sort that out for you
Nice Potjie Mate.. but slowly with the liquid.
Remember veggies generate even more liquid…
Ah yes! You are right. I just went hundys on this 😂
@@UnderTheHoodBBQ Don't worry about the liquid. It can be simmered of with an open lid. Liquids keep the potjie from burning.
@@Deontjie Cheers mate. The ones we did after this, we dropped the liquid back a bit and they were better.
Yes you can say "baie lekker"but i would say "bliksems lekker"😄
Haha cheers
Good job
Cheers thanks Richard. This was full of goodness through and through
Do you have a recipe for this pls
Hi @olgajacks. We don't have a recipe for this. Just going by the feel of moment.
This is so South African 😍
Haha yes!! This the best compliment ever.
How big is the pot you used and for this recipe, how many did it feed?
Ours is the size 4 and it fed 10 of us twice. It's a really great Potjie!
@@UnderTheHoodBBQ That'd feed my family of 3 men, 3 women & 2 kids, ONCE. Not even kidding. 🤣
@faith haha that’s awesome
Yor man I'm from Africa you just made soup brother 😢😢😢😢😢😢
Haha yes we went too hard on the liquids. Next time we'll cut right back my bro! Cheers for watching
My kind of stuff.
Cheers thanks mate!
Mooi man!
Baie Danke! 🙏

Thank you Sandra! We loved making this.
Where can I find a potjie pot NOT made in China? I'm in the USA.
Thanks
Failed at the Rum. 😂
You can't make potjie with tongs, get yourself a good wooden spoon. But great attempt
Cheers!!
SOUTH AFRICA IS A GREAT COUNTRY. JUST A PITY ABOUT THE ANC GOVERNMENT THAT RUIN IT.

EXACTLY, JUST LIKE RHODESIA WHEN THE COMMUNIST CRIMINALS TOOK OVER!👀🇿🇦
soup is not potjie.
Lol gold comment. Thanks buddy.
