    Just to add, the usual traps that teams get in with paying QBs is that they usually start with QBs on a rookie salary scale and fill in the gaps on their team with trades/extensions/FAs and not with other draft picks. So when the QB salary jumps substantially, it usually sacrifices one of the FAs that helped turn their team around. The Lions have always been working with Goff at a high cap number and are not relying on FAs to build their team. Fun fact...the Lions are only 1 of 2 franchises (Saints) that have never had a full-time QB starter on a rookie wage scale deal (since 2011). Great content guys! Keep it up!

      Continued growth, consistent performance week-to-week, and ultimately a championship in the coming years. QBs that get paid like he is (Mahomes, Burrow, Allen, etc) are not only viewed by statistics but on whether or not they make it to the big dance

      @@PrideofDetroit Josh Allen, Dakota Prescot, Justin Herbert, Kyle Murray all signed bigger deals in relative comparison and they are none of the things you just stated. Goff is already proven having been to a superbowl so why is everyone being so harsh. Though I am agreeing with you I also expect 1 within this contract. But look at Aaron Rodgers how much has he made NOT to win the big one?

      We drafted a player for lesser money. I personally would’ve waited to see how this season turned out or gave a 2-3 year extension for $40-$45 million while seeing exactly what I got in the 3rd round heisman candidate (prior to injury) I drafted.

    Even in 2021, a season where Goff struggled and at times looked completely lost on the field ( maybe that had to do with a receiving group that turned-over just before the first game? A WR group that was worst in the league? Or maybe switching the OC mid season? Or an OL that was a revolving door of injuries), but whatever the cause, Goff still had a better passer rating at the end of that season than Stafford’s career average with the Lions.

    I am a big Rams Fan, but always was a Goff fan. Don't get me wrong, I am so happy we were able to win the Super Bowl with Matthew Stafford, I've always been rooting for Jared Goff. I truly believed he was going to excel eventually, he is a tough minded individual. He proved that with after his rookie season with Jeff Fisher. But, more importantly he is a good dude. All his teammates really liked him on the Rams. When the Rams won the Super Bowl he congratulated everyone including McVay who kicked him to the curb. He is a class act, and could not be happier to see him get this success.

    212 is a number I see all of the time, ever since Wayne Gretzky broke the 200-point plateau with 212 points in the 81/82 season. I have no problem with Goff's contract now that it's signed, and hopefully, 212 is a good sign as well.

    They had to pay him. Sooner or later. Later meant money was going to be higher. They're good with what the head had to do. I'm not a goff hater, nor lover. Never expected a whole lot from him, but he just just keeps getting it done. Time and time again. I hope he keeps advancing. Seems he has every year since coming here. Just keep getting it done Jared!! Please!!!! 🙏

    A video (or two) about the cap would be appreciated! As far as Goff's contract goes, I know he earned it and it's the cost of doing business; but I can't help thinking what a crappy situation it is for Hooker who will have no chance to play if Goff stays healthy and what a crappy situation it will be for the Lions if he gets injured.

    17:18 you list 4 QB's that Goff is getting paid like and he's taken his team farther than any of them (well tied with Joe Burrow.) Did you know Justin Herbert has as many playoff wins as Zach Wilson? But hey, they're only one behind Lemar.

      You’re right and that’s the point we were trying to make. Goff 100% deserves this contract because unlike those guys we listed he’s actually accomplished things on the field. He’s earned this contract while guys like Herbert and Watson have been paid based on their youth and projected upside which is a much riskier gamble

    Great segment guys, I’m in agreement that the Goff contract seems excessive but that these contracts can not be viewed in a vacuum. Just look at it in the context of the next 5 elite QB contracts. My issue now moves to what do the Lions now do with Hendon Hooker. Will they need to start shopping him? He’ll probably take a shit ton of snaps in the preseason but as we know it’s hard to extrapolate to the regular season. Because of his advanced qage already how do you think Holmes wants to deal with this?

    • @PrideofDetroit
      @PrideofDetroit  Місяць тому

      I think the Lions are still in a good place with Hooker. You have the next 3-4 years of pure development and evaluation of a guy who has all the tools. If by year 3 you’ve seen enough to think you can move on from Goff and pass the torch you do that. If not, you go into year 4 with a solid veteran QB and probably look to get aggressive to find another young option to groom for a year behind Goff. I feel like this is still a win-win situation for the Lions and Hooker

    Goff turned around a terrible Cal team in 3 years. He took a terrible Rams team to the Superbowl in 3 years. He took a terrible Lions team to the NFC championship in three years. Trevor Lawrence has nice hair...sign him.

    It’s a myth that Goff can’t play without elite pass blocking.
    At the end of the 2022 season, PFF ranked the Lions’ OL at #21 for Pass blocking, and #9 for run blocking (the OL was injury riddled in 2022) and after Hockinson was traded at mid-season, the only noteworthy pass catcher Goff had to throw to was Amon Ra.
    Goff has led a top 3 offense two years in a row. No other QB has done that, and Goff has done so with less talent around him than the other top producing offenses.
    Goff is elite.

    • @flyinhawaiian9174
      @flyinhawaiian9174 Місяць тому +2

      @MarkLeBay Two years in a row in which the OC actively worked with Goff to design the offense around what Goff does well. That is not the norm in the league. Goff is not very good in deep pass accuracy and is completely lacking in scramble ability. He's good, hopefully good enough, but he's not great.

    • @MarkLeBay
      @MarkLeBay Місяць тому +1

      @@flyinhawaiian9174Every team in the league tailor’s its offense to the strengths and weaknesses of the QB - and honestly I think you have the narrative wrong. Jarod Goff and Dan Campbell took Ben Johnson, a young inexperienced TE coach, and tutored him. Goff and Campbell and Johnson worked together to build an elite offense together. Campbell continued to call plays for half the 2022 season and Goff is as much the author of this offense as Ben Johnson.
      Goff’s strengths are clearly much greater than his weaknesses, or else he would not be the only QB in the league to lead a top 3 offense two years in a row. Again, go back to the facts on the field. In 2022, Goff led the #3 offense in the league with less talent around him, and a worse offensive line, than all the other top producing offenses in the league. Then he did it again the next year. That’s not only great, that’s elite.
      And Goff is the first QB in NFL history to take two different teams from the basement of the league to a Conference Championship game in just three seasons.

    • @flyinhawaiian9174
      @flyinhawaiian9174 Місяць тому

      @@MarkLeBay I don't know where you got your information from, but Goff absolutely did NOT tutor Johnson. Campbell and Johnson and Brunell tutored Goff in reading defenses which is not an ability he had prior to coming to Detroit.
      The Rams did not ask him or coach him to do that. Neither did they build their offense around him. It was McVay's way or the highway.

    Jared Goff has ALWAYS been good. He ALWAYS wins 9+ games every year. Rams were cutting the 3 large contracts Cooks, Gurley, Goff and putting their money on defense with AD and Ramsey. Jared Goff took Rams deep into the playoffs with a broken throwing hand his last year in LA. Lions suck not Goff who handed them the Super Bowl last year with a lead 15 minutes away only to have the entire team (cept Rodriguez) and the coaching staff choke it away. Jared Goff is an elite QB the best in the NFC. It's not close. Don't want to hear about the other loser NFC QB's like Daniels.

    Paying Goff $53 million a year for 4 years was the first major blunder by Holmes. Let Hooker show you what he is able to do before throwing him away or having him rot on the bench. That salary was not a hometown discount so you could have paid that to Goff mid-season, damn it. Which player in the future will walk since we won't be able to pay him?

      You haven’t seen what Hooker can do, but Holmes has. Maybe he knows something you don’t?
      Goff has already shown in 2022 he can lead a top 3 offense with relatively cheap WRs, TEs, and RBs - so, maybe Jamo will be the one who walks. Goff, LaPorta, and Gibbs are more than enough for the next three years, and I suspect Goff’s contract will be a bargain in four and five years from now.
