This is a huge discussion for our modern world, how do we balance the pros and cons of technology? How do we make technology work for us in a healthy way? Talks like this are vital for the way we choose to move forward.
Great talk Ms Hayer. You literally defied death more than once, and yet you are bubbling with not just amazing knowledge but also energy and infectious enthusiasm. Please put all that you have written in the open domain and spread the message of Hope and joy of living. When can we expect your autobiography?
It was traumatic and sometimes I can be triggered again, but it's also made be strong, resilient and fearless in many ways too. Thanks for watching. 🙏🏽
Perspective check - every one wants autonomy and to feel they're in control but evidence here shows forfeiting what we deem our privacy can actually help inform and educate that really impacts lives in a positive way.
All that stuff about how algorithms are shaped by what we seek out really boggles my mind and makes it pretty telling when people complain about what they're seeing on their timelines
Okay until now it has completely gone over my head that AI is what drives algorithms. Like, it's so obvious, that they're the same thing, but I honestly never drew that connection, thank you Raj for making it clear to even a dummy like me
Raj I can fully relate to your experience of having to retell your medical story to different practitioners over and over again. You get good at it after awhile.
AI is a subject that has me endlessly conflicted, especially machine learning. It's so cool that AI-driven image generation has come as far as it has and I love using those tools, but I'm also aware that it is likely to cost some illustrators their jobs, for example. Raj has an interesting perspective on this!
Geez I can't imagine talking about my injuries with the calmness that Raj does, maybe I just haven't healed enough yet but I get choked up just thinking about them and the experiences I went through that caused them.
It's crazy to think about how far certain medical practices have come and also to think about how many patients came before us and got sub-par treatment before we learnt all these things!
I found the opening pretty interesting, "if things didn't break how would we learn to fix them?" Very true but if things didn't break then we wouldn't need to fix them so....
This is a very important thing to consider. The future of AI really depends on how it is used, and what influences the way it develops. If we're using it in a responsible way that benefits it's evolution, amazing! Sadly I'm not super hopeful about that being the case though
I've never thought of AI as an addiction before, but I suppose it is... it's very clear to see how some people are addicted to social media at the very least but perhaps this developing reliance on smart appliances and other home devices is a new kind of addiction in itself...
I think now, more than ever, is a VERY good time for people - especially women - to be aware of their algorithms and just who gets to see all that data
Geez I feel a bit foolish here... before this talk when I thought of AI, I would think of sentient robots, and yes, films like the Matrix and Terminator. Thank you Raj for helping me understand a little better about what this stuff actually means, and how it can be useful, not harmful.
Mmmm well this is quite interesting! Whenever I've thought about AI I can't help but think about the Terminator or those robot dogs... but it is everywhere now, and I'd never put two and two together regarding how those algorithms are formed.
Great info and yes we are the source of our own data. The term 'unintentional consequence' for the demise of common sense is much like adding sugar to everything. Who knew that refined sugar would start killing us.
Let's not confuse AI Learning as something that is being taught to humans. AI records our patterns and can often serve us more of what's not good for us.
That's true Nora, we are sometimes exposed to things that are not good for us, but that's why I try to be selective in what I pay attention to and pay attention to things that serve the good. 👍🏽
How do I know anything? Medical research is the worlds best kept secret and it shouldn't be. I know we have Dr Google, but wouldn't it be wonderful if mainstream education included the internal workings of mind and body patterns and less around the external success of what a human is worth in the dollars of success. I'm still filling out paper forms at my doctors office, while my bank and social platforms know more about my spending patterns than I do.
This is exactly what I would hope too; the comfort you get from a great surgeon is crucial. The one that did my head surgery made a joke about peeling my face off but in such a way that I was laughing when they put me under. So grateful.
Medical research or medicine is secondary to curing. Your faith and belief in the system and doctors are the ones that healed you. The final path of healing is your own deeper impressions in the subconscious mind and your belief in your own consciousness. Some one else might have failed just like the Doctors said that life in your initial condition was only 6 months long.
Tiktok in particular has some pretty egregious data collection methods, but I gotta say, when I'm depressed nothing is better than scrolling through an algorithmically-generated stream of digital junk food. the medical field is probably the more beneficial place for that kind of data collection though, haha
Raj has overcome enormous adversity and emerged triumphant, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing, Raj!
This is a huge discussion for our modern world, how do we balance the pros and cons of technology? How do we make technology work for us in a healthy way? Talks like this are vital for the way we choose to move forward.
Raj is a walking testament to what medical science can achieve and an inspiration.

Enjoyed listening to this discussion.
I admit I was a little confused with this talk but I persevered and I'm glad. Raj is a walking miracle, wow.
Haha, yes I guess that was a little intentional but thanks for sticking with it!
What an extraordinary woman with such an inspirational tale
This talk has a really great balance of personal history (so you understand where the person is coming from) and useful information. Nice.
Oh. My. Goodness. Her medical experience! And she speaks about it so calmly. That is traumatic.
It was traumatic and sometimes I can be triggered again, but it's also made be strong, resilient and fearless in many ways too. Thanks for watching. 🙏🏽
This talk has taught me more about AI than any other resource.
Perspective check - every one wants autonomy and to feel they're in control but evidence here shows forfeiting what we deem our privacy can actually help inform and educate that really impacts lives in a positive way.
This is actually such an informative talk, definitely sharing.
It's really cool to think about how the advances in storing in data have benefited other fields, especially medicine. Great talk Raj!
Wow, by the time I had fully imagined the injury and healing process I was feeling very grateful that I have not had to endure anything like it
this is a great talk, thanks Raj! I always love a good video on AI and algorithms.
it really is!
All that stuff about how algorithms are shaped by what we seek out really boggles my mind and makes it pretty telling when people complain about what they're seeing on their timelines
It's always interesting to think about the ways in which tech from one field influences the tech in another field. very cool
Sharing! I love love LOVE this talk! More people need to be educated on this front.
This woman is amazing and I hope she knows just how muchly so!
Congratulations Raj for not only surviving those speed humps but emerging as a inspirational speaker.
Wow you've been through so much, well done on not being consumed by that trauma to the point where it's all you can talk about.
Amazing. I have no problems at all after listening to this story. She's a bit of a miracle.
Thanks Giz, that is really kind of you to say, sometimes I do feel like a medical miracle!
Okay until now it has completely gone over my head that AI is what drives algorithms. Like, it's so obvious, that they're the same thing, but I honestly never drew that connection, thank you Raj for making it clear to even a dummy like me
agreed! love this talk.
It is astounding the extent of our daily impact on the technological development of AI isn't it?!
Wishing a a long and pain free life your journey had a tough start with that accident at 19.
Raj I can fully relate to your experience of having to retell your medical story to different practitioners over and over again. You get good at it after awhile.
Great talk Raj, love finding TEDs that are actually helpful
Thank you for sharing this with me Pip! Wish it hadn't taken me so long
@@gemi10togood Better late than never!!
It really is amazing how much the human body can withstand and heal from when it's given what it needs, and Raj is definitely a testament to that!
true!
This talk is amazing. So many good points all tied together to make some points that are really worth considering.
and coincidentally, the algorithm brought me here! great talk.
That's awesome Paul!
saving. a lot more in here than i thought, beyond informative for rn.
Thanks Risa, I write a bit about AI on Medium, but I am constantly learning more and more about how AI is being used in medicine!
wow...this is mind blowing.
good send thank you!

me neither
I would love to learn more about how these kinds of algorithms function, it's a fascinating subject
that stat about recommended viewing on netflix is wild. it's weird to think how much algorithms run our lives these days.
After listening to Raj I will no longer be complaining about my body's aches and twinges.
True, Charlotte, but we live in a world where things break, and humans too. ;-)
This is a very important thing to consider. The future of AI really depends on how it is used, and what influences the way it develops. If we're using it in a responsible way that benefits it's evolution, amazing! Sadly I'm not super hopeful about that being the case though
This talk just makes me think of how the Facebook algorithm cycles negative posts to the top because they're the ones people interact with the most.
I've never thought of AI as an addiction before, but I suppose it is... it's very clear to see how some people are addicted to social media at the very least but perhaps this developing reliance on smart appliances and other home devices is a new kind of addiction in itself...
I agree Raj having a "digital twin" would be beneficial for anyone who has health issues as any doctor could quickly see their issues.
I'm all for AI assisting doctors and giving them more quality time with their patients.
I think now, more than ever, is a VERY good time for people - especially women - to be aware of their algorithms and just who gets to see all that data

This is stuff we all partake in daily but it feels weird to think about when someone lays it all out in these terms
So true! It's weird when we actually think about the things we do automatically
It's weird to actively think about things that have become automatic
Great info and yes we are the source of our own data. The term 'unintentional consequence' for the demise of common sense is much like adding sugar to everything. Who knew that refined sugar would start killing us.
Great point Emma! Unintentional consequence is true even if technology we take for granted today. The microwave is a good example!
Why do I do things that Are bad for me? Why did that question confuse me so much?
🙃 habits are hard to break!
Nice

very true Jim! I agree.
I love the idea of having a digital twin, particularly if doctors can poke and prod it rather than me to fix the problems I have.
I'm all for the help AI gives doctors if it means they have more time to establish rapport and trust with their patients.
This is exactly what I would hope too; the comfort you get from a great surgeon is crucial. The one that did my head surgery made a joke about peeling my face off but in such a way that I was laughing when they put me under. So grateful.

All of my social media platforms just feed me cat related content and I'm pretty happy with that 😅
Customers of Medibank in Australia must be concerned that their "digital twin" information is up for sale after their security breach.
She is walking science. Bionic woman isn’t a scifi concept anymore
I'm a simple man: I see a Kraftwerk reference, I click the like button.
Tiktok in particular has some pretty egregious data collection methods, but I gotta say, when I'm depressed nothing is better than scrolling through an algorithmically-generated stream of digital junk food. the medical field is probably the more beneficial place for that kind of data collection though, haha
Yep, I sometimes think Netflix knows me better than my partner. AI analysing and making suggestions.
What you are girl,, you are very pretty.
