According to local legends, the temple is associated with the demon king Kumbhasura, who terrorized the region. Lord Ganesha in the form of elephant gave a sword (Asi) to Bheema who is said to have defeated the demon here, and hence the name "Kumbashi" is sometimes used to refer to this temple. The main deity of the temple is Lord Vinayaka (Ganesha). The idol of Lord Vinayaka in the temple is believed to be swayambhu, which means it is self-manifested.
