The engine at 1:00 minute is clearly a 2 stroke yet has an open crankcase. Not sure how these work!?

Same as a 2 cycle diesel.... the side portsare for drawing air for combustion only

@@charlietullos6726 Not to be “that guy”, but those “side ports” are actually crosshead guides. The rod is fixed and cannot pivot at the piston and passes through a bushing at the back of the cylinder. The pivot or wrist pin is outside the cylinder on the crosshead, the part sliding in the crosshead guides. This still uses the backside of the piston for scavenging, but the crank itself is out in the open.
