'Destroy target land. Its controller glares angrily at you until the end of the game'
I'm not going to check, bur I am going to assume I said this, last time, so here it is again, but it always amazes me when Sinkhole doesn't make one of these lists. Otherwise, as a firm backer of Kand Destruction, a wonderful list!
It was 2003, I was 18 years old and just getting into Magic with a few friends, primarily 8th edition and some older sets. I remember my naivete and arrogance in thinking that I stumbled upon the "creative" idea of a land destruction deck. Learned later I absolutely did not come up with the idea at all...And had my Magic playing friends almost toss me out of the table for playing such a deck. I haven't played one in 15 years, but all the LD cards I have are still safe and sound in some binders...Ready...Waiting 😈
Bring them back out.
The three best words in magic "destroy target land" haha. Ponza is def my most played pauper deck and I love drafting these kinds of decks in cube, its always such a thrill!!
What's funny about Cleansing Wildfire is that while it's clearly land destruction card with both cantrip and drawback. It's used mostly with indestructible lands as Rampant Growth with cantrip... In red.
This card should eventually replace Stone Rain on the list, as it is incredibly disruptive against multicolor, pretty cheap at two mana, and can destroy lands with zero drawback if they have no basics left in their deck. This can also potentially disrupt tutor effects played recklessly during your turn by making them choose between a basic land or the card they just tutored.
My Numot land destruction EDH deck approves of this list. My playgroup does not.
Land destruction is the best. I run an Avacyn commander and run Armageddon. Simple formula.
@@TheGloriousLobsterEmperor I used to do that but my playgroup got too sad. I shifted it to an Orzhov Angel deck. Then I said I didn't care and ran Numot so I could run all the good mass land destruction and avacyn and stax lol
The only problem I see with playing Numot at the table is the color identity keeping you from playing Destructive Flow.
AMERICA! F YEAH!
Narset, enlightened master voltron/MLD. 9 direct lands, 6 of them indestructible, a massive pile of mana rocks, and nearly every MDFC to ensure I can get her out and start smacking people around
Nothing compares to that vibe I get when I go T1 Llanowar elf, into T2 Stone Rain. :)
I'm wondering if any of the cards that "destroy target permanent" were considered for this list?
it seems not. assassin's trophy would have made the list for sure. likely others would as well, so the list likely would have looked significantly different. maybe this was intentional?
@@doormatt72I’m sure it was, otherwise it wouldn’t be nearly as interesting of a list, and calling a list “top 10 land destruction” when several of the cards on it were mostly used for anything but that would feel like a cop-out.
Based on the wording in the Balance entry, I don't think so.
yea probably not because beast within would be up here
This list is pretty neat, with different formats each bringing something to the table.
I don’t play MTG, but I love card games in general and love your analytics.
This list is giving me PTSD to the B/R land destruction deck my older brother ran back in the early 2000s
Sweet, you posted this just as I started working on my Melek land destruction edh deck. Probably not the most ideal choice for a land destruction commander but I figured that copying land destruction spells would allow me to apply more pressure to my opponents. Also since he's blue he has access to bounce spells, which seem like they'd work well in a deck that deprives my opponents of mana, plus some bounce spells can hit lands themselves.
Your outro music is so dope. Best experienced on good speakers.
Thanks for including the EDH counts on the cards in the newer videos.
Land destruction gets a bad rap in EDH but I find it to be a great finisher in the right deck. Like my Queen Marchesa Mardu Superfriends deck, slam down a Jokulhaups with a couple planeswalkers and the board and it's over. Add a Teferis Protection and a dash of salt. No combos, just good clean fun.
Playing mld with a plan (both in game and in deckbuilding) is okay.
Experimenting with a Fulminator Mage/Avalanche Riders/Charmaw 3-4-5 curve, plus Phantasmal Image/Metamorph. Modern is pretty fast, so need to control the early game to make this work. Fun but inconsistent.
I was playing Gruul land destruction back in the mid 90s. Thermokarst, Ice Storm, Pillage, Llanlowar Elves for mana and attacks (Also birds) then toss down some Ankhs of Mishra and Black Vise, and sit back and count your red direct damage spells!
You have no idea how long I’ve been confused watching MTG videos and watching people say “Yuta” when refering to faerie mastermind and having no idea what they were talking about. I thought it had to be an old card with a similar effect or something. Now I realize its just at the bottom of the card! Thanks for clearing that up
Thanks for showing Ernie some love….
I wonder whether Volatile Fault will end up being better than Demolition Field and Field of Ruin. On one hand, when sacrificed, it doesn't give you permanent mana plus the opponent gets the land untapped. On the other, it's cheaper to use than its older siblings and has some artifact and Treasure synergy (plus it's a Treasure, so it's mana of any colour).
its up there with demo field in edh because a treasure allows additional mana fix for a turn and also feild of ruin is garbo.
Even more annoying used to be hand destruction. Turn one Hippy, turn 2 Hymn, turn 3 hippy number 2 and toss in a few Racks and a Sinkhole or two just to make them extra miserable.
How about turn one swamp into dark ritual, into another dark ritual, into a Hymn to Tourach and Hypnotuc Soecter?
@@engelostermann7203 I think I only managed to pull that off once. Then you hit them with a turn two Sinkhole and they flip the table.
i love when lists get updated
one of my personal favorite land destruction creatures is Helldoozer. I use it in my zombie commander deck
The worst thing my original 5-color deck could do to the opponent:
Global Ruin, then Legacy Weapon
Maybe next time we can have a top 10 Land Destruction Lands
The fact that the 2023 list only dropped 3 entries from the 2017 list really shows how much WotC dislikes printing strong land destruction. I can't blame them, but, dang.
"Crack Delta, Island." "Strip mine." "YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS!" is one of the reasons to watch Vintage content.
Ahh the cards that made Dingus Egg and Ankh of Mishra worth playing.
I'm surprised sinkhole was not on the list!
Wish this would include Pre-Modern, the best format of magic,
You have too many friends who want to play Magic with you? These are the 10 best cards to solve that problem!
I have never been so excited by a list topic before. Land destruction is my favorite thing in MTG, and I just beg and plead that one day it will truly be good again. I'm hoping that since this is part of the Ambassador program, there is a chance my wish will come true. Please print more efficient LD, please!
So sad that sinkhole is not on th list, but on the other hand I've been in love with Pillage since the summer of 1996 and I genuinely hope this card will keep on getting points. Cheers
Cleansing Wildfire is a newcomer I'm sure of it!!
Well maybe not lol
Close though!
Stone Rain still doing work 💪
Still would like to see you add the art for cards that are in multiple sets.
No sinkhole? 😮
destroy all lands, friendships, hopes and dreams
Please do top 10 signets I'm not joking, just curious
People are sleeping on Break the Ice . Especially in modern tournament play.
The best card is from Alpha/Beta: Sinkhole (Sorcery BB "destroy target land")
This list is based on objective performance of how the cards have performed, not any sort of opinion.
Imagine if you could play Teferi's protection and then Balance
"Since the first year of competitive Magic, [Strip Mine]'s never been legal as more than a one-of in any format" - what are we counting as competitive Magic? 4x Strip Mines was a staple of Necropotence decks in Type 2 (Standard) tournaments before it got restricted.
no Casualties of War?
suprised urzas sylex and myojin of infinate rage didnt rank
you should maybe think about bumping up cards that are SO good they are banned in almost everything so they are not getting points in your system. Also no sinkhole?
Make land destruction great again
Plough Under??
I'm sad for the Avalanche Riders.
Sinkhole getting no love at all??
Whaaa no plow under?
The list is based on objective metric, and not an opinion based one. These are the cards that have been topping events, and for one reason or another Plow Under just hasn't seen much success.
@@superbaas8822 I'm gonna guess it didn't make the list cause technically it's not land destruction.
But it'd be nice to see where it would land, cause it's so good

No Sinkhole?? 😮
Where’s sinkhole?
Land Destruction gets a lot of unnecessary hate. I’m of the opinion that it’s an integral aspect of interaction.
Some people complain that land destruction is “unfun” because they don’t get to cast/play their cards. Those cards are often “combo pieces” used to create and/or facilitate their wincon. As a player, my primary objective is to win. Destroying or dismantling my opponent’s machinations for their own success is a viable strategy.
I rarely play EDH given how frowned upon and taboo arbitrary cards or mechanics generally are in the community. I’ve heard people screech about “lands being sacred” or some nonsense, but in the same breath ask/wonder why nobody’s done anything about the player who’s been ramping into the sun since Turn 1 and played 40% of their deck by Turn 4.
Where would've sinkhole ranked
All my money for sinkhole in standard or historic.
Sinkhole 😢
stone rain and not sinkhole? mah...
No small pox?
I don't get too salty about targeted land destruction though a deck designed to do that and little else would make me scoop and never play that person again or at least refuse to play against that deck. It's annoying to have one of your land blown up and a set back but mass land destruction is magnitudes worse.
Where is Sinkhole???
wow Sinkhole not in top 10.
I’ll never understand how land destruction is shunned by most of the MTG community.
Sorry if some players want to exploit a strategy that is detrimental to those who aren’t prepared. There are so many different cards to run in your deck to save your permanents from destruction.
Not everyone wants to play aggressive and fast paced.
third
No sinkhole, wasteland , strip mine or ice storm . Really?
