The Ghost Town Stuck in Time

- On the Eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains lies a town that time forgot. Bodie, Calif. was once a mining village with 10,000 residents. Today, it looks as if the townsfolk simply vanished one day: cues remain on the pool tables, jackets hang next to unmade beds and arithmetic lessons adorn the schoolhouse chalkboard. It's a relic of the past covered in three inches of dust.

Great Big Story is a video network dedicated to the untold, overlooked & flat-out amazing. Humans are capable of incredible things & we're here to tell their stories. When a rocket lands in your backyard, you get in.
WTF this was only a minute long? But there's so much to show about the place. What gives?
Because they showed pretty much the entire town. If you go there, there is almost nothing left.
the paranormal peeps can tell you more about this place
I'm very disappointed that this didn't have more information to it. Bodie is one of my fav places, and I was entranced by it as a kid. It would have been lovely to see more expert shots from you guys matched up with the charmingly haunting details of its story.
+Oh, Mothstradamus
it was a good thing you didn't take anything from Bodie as a sovereign
I grew up in southern California. Since 1968 my family would go here every year. Then you could walk through the buildings. There were nothing in them. Everything was taken or broken. It is now staged with items. The buildings are not open. You look through windows. Your not allowed to pick up anything outdoors on ground. You may see a occasional square nail, or piece of broken glass. Cool video, but misleading
thank you for truth. I was wondering why there was so much stuff inside the buildings. I think PBS "California's Gold" did a special on this place.
I was wondering what kind of freaky time traveling alien shit made them up and leave
lol i was just thinking as i watched this 'imagine all the 19th century medicine just left at the general store. opium party anyone?
One of those boards said there was going to be a potluck dinner. Do you think that that is still gonna happen?
+KingBen98 i hope so.
im there right now just waiting....i hope it comes soon im kinda hungry
@@OfficialgoatHD are you still waiting?
@@zebr0169 annnnnnnny day now
Nice pictures. No story. I google earth this. got just as much as this video. Great Big Story. No I feel like you told me there was a steak and I got a Bologna sandwich.
I'd prefer the dandwich.
Im in more of a sushi mood
This place was so interesting and mysterious. There is so much more than what this quick clip showed but it brought back some wonderful memories.
nicely preserved. good job! I like it.
Love youre vids keep it freakin up dude
*Great short story*
At 1:02 you will see: October, 1987,and the most hidden one. AMY WAS HERE. Oh jee....
i've been there before, it was really interesting
50,000 people used to live here
Looks too small. How?
Dat Boi Goku You are not a true gamer if you dont understand his statement...
Pymr
What I don’t get it
On the chalkboard 1:00 the math problem says 6-3=2
😂 nice catch. Also 2+2=5 it says haha
This place actually served as a piece of inspiration for a haunted house at Alton towers Scare fest 2016
Reminds me of something off 'Supernatural'
I don't get how it is still in such a good state. If I was living in america I would just go there and take free vintage stuff!
Guards and fences. You have to schedule a tour.
+Miki-Alien
everybody who has taken something from the place have AWEFUL stories to tell about a curse, thats why.
Over 200,000 people visit it yearly. There are park rangers that live there and are on staff 24 hours a day.
+john lindahl that makes more sense
You admit to being toxic to history then?
I have been there it is definitely worth checking out.
Bodie had a population size of Los Angeles back in 1880s. The cain family was my family ancestors that lived in Bodie
but is there WiFi?
the music sounded like something out of there will be blood
terrefic film, terrific video too
0:58 6-3=2??
Later in 50 years after this would be re opened the history would be forgotten.
Why do these kinds of videos get so many dislikes and so few views?
+Andrew Sang Perhaps they call themselves Great Big Story, when many of these are too short and have little story to them. Not all... but many. It's almost like it is a teaser trailer to a full documentary. They spark intrigue, but then go nowhere with it. At least that's my take.
+gigi stoner It usually depends on tne story. They go to things uncommkn and special and unique and show a glimpse of what it is without becoming a full on documentary and spending days editing something when there is so much to cover ☺
I really like this format. They're short enough to be watched on the fly, without having to put down 45 minutes of my time. But I can still get the gist of what's happening. Sure I'd prefer if they'd narrate this video, but I like that they let the people tell their own story instead of blurting over them like in most documentaries.
Lethal thanks you really convinced me!
No but aside from the ad hom, I don't have enough time to watch full length documentaries. Maybe they should make some, but I doubt I'd be able to watch them
"These videos offer nothing more then my curiosities equivalent of blue balls" This so much this
how cool would it be to play pool and have a beer in that bar?
i find this very fascinating
This has some cool visuals, but where is the evidence that the town had 10,000 people? I'm curious about that because a Popular Mechanics article in 1927 also said "11,000 people" without citing any source. The highest end population estimate claimed 5,000-7,000 during a brief spike related to a gold rush in the late 1870s, and the most ever reported (in the 1880 census) was just 2,700. So how is there such a massive discrepancy? It should have been at its peak just before that census.
The other issue - this doesn't explain what happened. Mining profits were down and the town had been in decline, and then one wealthy man bought everything in the mid 1910s. Then it also sounds like, shortly after that point, the town began marketing itself as a "ghost town" to attract tourists via automobile, as car tourism was taking hold.
I'd also like to see some kind of talk about the preservation work involved. This is portrayed as a town frozen in time, but in reality it's actively maintained to look that way. If you look at the Bodie Foundation page, you see that they've done all kinds of work to rebuild parts of structures and preserve buildings.
+Rob Shepard True, the California State Park System setup and maintains the "lived in" look. I'd also be interested in hearing more about the shootout some years ago between two park service employees who watch over the place during the winter. Or so I heard.
When I was there, I got a kick out of reading that the cyanide factory was up the hill, next to the hospital, which was next to the graveyard. :D
This would be a sweet place for a photoshoot
0:58 / 6 - 3 isnt 2
😂😂😂
What is the music being played? It sound like Philip Glass but I can't identify it....nor can any online music ID apps.
To me (also), it sounded like Philip Glass ("Koyaanisqatsi "), but the MusicID app identified it (perhaps?) as "A winged victory for the sullen"
The last time I was in California I really wanted to go there, But at last when your with your're family. Disneyland always comes first. :(
ive been there, its actually pretty cool
I bet it has terrible WIFI.
The song distracts me, mainly bc I think it was the same song that they used in Documentary Now (ep Juan Loves Rice and Chicken) XD
It is a State Park, with Park Rangers. One interesting fact, is it has been decided to let the town deteriorate naturally. If a fence or building falls down, that's where it lies. The weather is extremely hot, to snow in winter. It is high desert.
Tell me about it. I worked on the restroom facility you see at the 8 second mark. I believe we couldn't add any materials that wouldn't have been around before the 1960's.
+cathy L. I've been there several times. It is a great place to visit. It does bother me that they are going to allow it to deteriate until it is no longer a place you can visit. It is a part of our history that we all deserve to experience. I don't think making sure the buildings don't fall down is too much to ask. But, thats our govt. for you. History is either "changed" by them or ignored.
What's the music? Cmon someone make my day.
You guys need to check out some Huell Howser California's Gold episodes---this shit's been done.
Very cool
That's crazy!
They never go deep. I feel like there is so much more to talk about !!! I feel anyway (why was it deserted? When was it deserted? Is there a reason they've preserved - not touched anything!) etc. etc. etc!!!
'50,000 people used to live here now it's a ghost town'
why no spray paint? is it illegal to go in those homes?
This is too short for me , wanna see more 😕😕😑
So... In which october 1st will the poltuck dinner be happening?
"This town,
TOWN,
Is coming like a Ghost Town..."
Isn't this the town where they shot the movie "There will be blood"?
I wanna drive here!! Can people visit this town!?
It's forbidden
+apple tyler Yes, it's about 30-45 minutes north of Mammoth off of the 395. It is run by the state. There are rangers that live there. There are also tours of the silver mine. It's about a 1-3 hour visit....depending on the persons interest.
I went on a field trip there
Reminds me of the town from There Will Be Blood.
what song is this?
It's got nothing on Bannack, MT
Bannack, MT isn't cursed though......
100000 People used to live here... Now it's a ghost town.
Do ghost town have a special status? How come everything there hasen't been pillaged by hypstery tourist or smt like that?
*human condition*
Cool
The narrator sounds like the host Michelle Trachtenberg from the old show "Truth or Scare"
great
i feel like i just got played.
Why all of them left?
Hey who’s watching in 2019 and I luv the song and woah why all mining house are abandoned :(

this is a valuless video. fifteen seconds on google would say more than this entire minute-and-a-half video did
0:58 ...no wonder Math is so bad in the US. It's been done wrong since the early days.

How is this a great big story? It's a minute long
that's definitely not haunted

The whole area looks like armadillo
@0:59 sec you can see 6-3=2 smh
reminds me of red dead redemption :o
This place is going to be raided in the next couple of days
+Oklahoman Mapper he means now that people know abt this place, people are going to go there looking for loot or exploration
***** it means tons of people are going to swarm out to the place to steal and vandalise
+Brett Armstrong it's the highest visited state park in California , second only to Hearst castle. Over 200,000 people visit it every year. There are park rangers stationed there 24 hours a day that live there.
the last 100+ or so people who took something from Bodie, regretted it sooner then later. Every single one returned what the took(even if it was just a nail). Theres a darker sotry to this, if you google it you'll found out why.
You said Nevada wrong, it's not Nevadaahh it's Nevadaaa
I've been hareo
Looters?
the only looters here are the ones who return the loot they stole because well, theres a darker story this Bodie
This is an abandoned Scientology city taxed exempt wasted of taxpayer dollars
:07......you monster
Why do you present an interesting topic and proceed to make a one and a half minute video? Beyond frustrating.
JIN JIN BISMILAH JIN JIN
