    Royal Oud is definitley one that I didn't appreciate on first spray but years later, I find it to be one of my favorites. I sold my original bottle but my grandpa bought me a new bottle after I told him I sold it. He always says Royal oud is the best fragrance ever made and I'm at my fragrance journey where I can see what he means. It's truly outstanding.

    La Nuit was never that strong (I had the 2012 version) to begin with so I'd ignore all the complainers and be happy with the current iteration. And I still appreciate you giving limelight to Cartier Declaration when no one else does, what an awesome frag.

    I think we all get too caught up in longevity. The transients of fragrances are necessary imo. Just like real life settings, it's far better to leave a great impression and create memorable moments. Then, move on to the next, never ever stagnating or overataying your welcome.

    I wonder if my comment calling M7 a masterpiece on your last video featuring it had any influence on this list 🤔 😅 I was so glad to see it pop up here. It truly is the first palatable, beautiful, and classy oud even if the original print marketing was a bit divisive 😂

    I think people get too caught up in the longevity battles, and I find it unfair to compare 6 month old batches to bottles that have macerated for 7 years or longer, it is a no brainer that those bottles will last longer.

      The point is that those bottles were a lot more potent when they came out! Otherwise this debate wouldn't exist.

    • @vlxxrd4866
      @vlxxrd4866 3 місяці тому

      @@ricolini70 There’s no way for you to actually know they were more potent unless you can compare a new bottle of it to a current bottle, which you can’t. the brain is not a reliable source of memory, especially something like smell, and the trends set by youtubers in the media has only created a false narrative and have thousands of people agreeing, when in reality, maybe only a handful of them have even tried the original batches of aventus. they’re just going with what they’re told.

    • @MCWon212
      @MCWon212 3 місяці тому +2

      Nah... The comparison is for the longevity between the first release and new bottles purchased recently. Notable for when a large conglomerate acquires a brand and reduces the quality as a means to cut cost. All the while, increasing the cost of the product. You know who I'm talking about.

    I’ve learnt that you can’t gauge performance unless you’ve personally tried it. My skin doesn’t let most perfumes last including some of the ones that are known to have beast mode performance. However, there are many that don’t last on most people that tend to last on my skin … eg. Juniper Sling by Penhaligon’s. Great classy and quality content as always. I love your style and the thought process behind it.

    Three fragrances I own (and love) immediately came to mind when you defined "timeless masterpiece"...and two of them are older than Guerlain Vetiver:
    1) Guerlain Jicky (created by Aimé Guerlain in 1889) -- Often said to be the first modern perfume (with "modern" having a different meaning, obviously, from the very presentist ways we often use it when talking about perfume) and the oldest fragrance in continuous production today. And it's still wonderful in its current form(s): lemon, lavender, vanilla, and some skank. Absolutely unisex, absolutely wonderful.
    2) Knize Ten (François Coty and Vincent Roubert, 1925): The entire category of leather fragrances might not exist without this one. A floral leather that still wears great. Like Jicky, pretty unisex (though marketed to men from the start). The leather note here is extraordinarily realistic imo. When I first sampled this, I didn't connect to it. Somehow visiting a series of leather stores in Marrakesh created a kind of aha moment for me with it.
    3) L'Air du Desert Marocain (Andy Tauer, 2005) -- The first indie scent I ever bought (back in 2008) and I've always had a bottle ever since. I loved it from the moment I tried it, but, as my perfume experience grew, my appreciation for its beauty and subtlety has only increased. Its success helped foster the current wave of indie perfumers...and influenced an extraordinary number of oriental fragrances in the years since it came out.

    Justin I saw YSL M7 sold in Douglas stores here in Bonn, Germany just days ago. Relatively easily available then. I've smelled it and yes, very nice woody spicy fragrance!
    Agreeing with Amouage Reflection Man. I find it more similar to the new Gucci Guilty Elixir, the latter being creamier/denser. I think the two together make quite a great high-end, minimalistic, coherent combo. JPG Le Male could be added to make quite a trio, and in fact even a fourth one: Cuba Gold EDT, as budget alternative to Le Male itself.

    Reflection Man to me is my entry level floral scent, with that Jasmine note being highlighted, which men can wear with ease. It doesnt mean they can but theres a better chance if they are averse to florals. Also, it seems the people who suggest that Reflection Man smells like Le Male arent wrong but theyre the type who barely scratch the surface. Both are powdery and have a floral note as a primary note, lavender for le male, but other than those i dont see NOR SMELL any other similarity. The Le Male fanboys can stop dreaming now; reflection man maybe in the same category but not the same league.

    It's fun (in a good way) to see how your opinion on Tom Ford Noir has changed over the years, that one was also a bit of a challenge for me to warm up to. Last year I managed to get a second hand EDT bottle, I could sense the similarity with a more minty and citrusy aspect, less ''dark'' I presume less patchouli. Sadly it's a 10 year old bottle and it smells slightly rancid especially on skin, not sure what's up with that but I dont imagine I'll come accross it again for a reasonable price in 2024.

    How is the performance “a subjective variable” man?

    • @SirSillageSniffington
      @SirSillageSniffington 3 місяці тому +2

      Because everyone has their own level of sensitivity to individual aromachemicals, their own sensitivity of their sense of smell as a whole, and their own tolerance to nose blindness. Also some people count ‘longevity’ as how long they can smell a scent in the air around them and consider a fragrance “gone” once it settles closer to the skin whereas others still enjoy it as a skin scent and count how long they can smell it on the skin until it’s gone completely. So put this all together and everyone experiences scents differently.
      You can see it here in the comments with plenty of people saying they get great performance out of Millesime Imperial… go read some Fragrantica reviews and you’ll see many people feel the complete opposite. if performance wasn’t subjective, then this wouldn’t be the case and everyone would agree.
      The fact that on Fragrantica 143 people have rated Orto Parisi Megamare as having ‘moderate’ longevity, and 215 people have voted 4711 Cologne as also having ‘moderate’ longevity, really drives home this point. 😂

    • @alimhzmh1400
      @alimhzmh1400 3 місяці тому

      @@SirSillageSniffington the fact that anyone has their own opinions about let’s say longevity doesn’t mean that it’s a subjective matter. With your reasoning why don’t we go ahead and say colors are subjective because we don’t really know how everyones occipital lobe is interpreting that reflection of light. Even if some people are saying contradictory things on orto parisi, the fact that statistics show most of them are experiencing a certain performance it means that it is not entirely subjective anymore. We can still say there are some subjectivity to it but I don’t agree on saying that “performance is subjective”

    • @SirSillageSniffington
      @SirSillageSniffington 3 місяці тому +2

      @@alimhzmh1400 That’s a very good (and well written) point. You are correct that there is a definite bell curve with these ratings; here’s Millesime Imperials for instance (from 2647 votes):
      Very Weak - 8%
      Weak - 18%
      Moderate - 53%
      Long Lasting - 17%
      Eternal - 4%
      So yes, statistically speaking, a person is more likely to find Orto Parisi fragrances strong than they are weak… so I can see why one could argue that means they’re not completely subjective.
      However, isn’t this the case with many subjective things?
      - Many people say that one’s taste in food is subjective but then statistically most people enjoy Pizza.
      - People also say that one’s taste in music is subjective but then at the time they were big, most people enjoyed The Beatles.
      - Art taste is also said to be subjective but then most people seem to enjoy Monet’s or other popular artist’s works.
      - Perception of beauty is considered subjective but a large amount of people seem to find certain celebrities or models fairly universally accepted as attractive.
      So with many ‘subjective’ matters you are going to get a normal distribution curve whereby the majority of people will feel a similar way - so does that mean none of these things are subjective either? If your answer to that is “yes” then it shows that one’s definition of what is “subjective” is ironically also subjective, in which case it wouldn’t be surprising that you and Justin disagree.

      Sir Sillage has said everything I would say in response to your question. But to answer your follow up question about colors: we very much see colors somewhat subjectively. How do you know that your "red" is the same as my "red"? How would you describe the color red, anyway? Human perception is completely variable.
      If you haven't seen this very informative video about it, I highly recommend it:

      @@stayfreshproductions It’s not difficult to answer your question. I might not know that what is your inner experience of color red, but I can tell you that there is a considerable degree of universality on how colors are perceived outside of us. So you can easily talk about your experience of “red” with another person regardless of what you two might really experience inside.

    Guerlain's Vetiver is unbearable to me, but really like Grey Vetiver EDT. Wouldn't be caught dead wearing Reflection man either. It smells too feminine for my taste.

    2002 M7 and the M7 of today are two completely different fragrances got nothing to do with the Original 2002

    • @DeflatingAtheism
      @DeflatingAtheism 3 місяці тому

      Well the product history is confusing, to say the least. The M7 sold today is a renamed (and possibly reformulated) version of the clear bottle M7 Oud Absolu sold a few years ago, which is in turn a different fragrance from the black bottle M7 Oud Absolu, which was later resold in the “La Collection” line. How similar or different these are from each other is a source of endless debate, and the design houses seem to have no interest in making it easy for us.

      @@DeflatingAtheism i had all three batches of the 2002 M7, all three of them are beautiful, i do still have the original 2002 M7 on my shelf, and i tried absolu one you mentioned and couple of months ago i went to a boutique to try the latest M7, the only thing in common is the name, the fragrance itself is completely different not even 1% identical, the old M7 is well balanced Rosemary and Oud based fragrance, the new one is an expired root bear and dr pepper, no connection what so ever, original M7 was a masterpiece that unfortunately no one today will know how it was, it's a playful flirty Oud/rosemary fragrance, you don't have to be very formal, causal playful date night kind of scent, unlike today if you need something for that occasion people will recommend a sweet gourmand, no problem with that i love gourmand, but the 2002 M7 was truly special, i tried doing the fragrance community a favor by donating samples to armaf, lattafa and Afnan but they all refused my offer i literally live within an hour away from their factories, but hey i guess the original M7 belongs in the 2000s, it might offend someone these days lol
