I find the comment by br1ck kind of amusing when he says "i like how sibs using scrollwheel." (the scrollwheel exploit makes you unbelievably fast flying your body in a straight line, its nuts) Just to give you guys some background, there were two pro players using the scrollwheel exploit with Clutch at that time which was Raisy and Vengeur. Nothing against them, I love those two players. But its just weird how I was actually the only Pro player in the QPL Player Meetings that was constantly demanding there be a rule put in place to make it not allowed to use the Clutch scrollwheel exploit. Yet I got accused, not Raisy or Vengeur who were actually abusing the exploit. Everyone loves to forget this. Also during those meetings every Pro player was silent, not backing me up or wanting that rule. Weeks later it finally was enforced as a rule, thanks to me being persistent with it. They love forgetting this and never talk about it. Yet in this match, its on my perspective almost the entire time and not once do you see the scrollwheel exploit being used. You can clearly see me jump and then dash. With the exploit its instant and gives a huge forward speed that isn't possible in 99.99% of cases naturally. The reason people loved and supported my stream in a big way was because I documented my entire progression in Quake as a newcomer and from what I was told you actually have to practice that scrollwheel exploit in order to use it properly to begin with. But again, all of my Clutch games were streamed or recorded and I love how not one person has ever made 1 clip showing me use that exploit because obviously I never have. It just shows how the players who accused me of that like br1ck, whaz, effortless, nosfa, and others, have no idea what they are talking about and don't know what that exploit even looks like in practice. Also, its adorable to be accused of cheating by players like effortless who were caught walhacking twice in Quake Live. I've never cheated in any video game in my 20+ year history of FPS gaming. Not to mention, if I apparently am using that exploit, why is Raisy, who moved 2x better than me with Clutch at the time and also not using the exploit after that rule was created- was never accused of using it? Hahah, the hypocrisy and rage from people just because I learned the most difficult Champion in the game is just crazy to me. I was clearly the #1 Clutch player in America for 6+ years, so much so to the point where Raisy never dared to pick Clutch against me. Rapha and every Pro player / Challenger on Earth banned Clutch against me 100% of the time. We never even got to see who was the best Clutch in the world because Round Duels was sadly gone and you couldn't even mirror match in Timelimit. I just thought you guys mind find this insight interesting. Some Quake history for you and some knowledge of the nonsense I had to deal with and push for behind the scenes.
I always wondered why using a scroll wheel on clutch was considered an exploit. From my perspective, I don't believe it to be one because it's just a bind that is accessible to all the players. It's not like certain players can't use it, because they don't have a scroll wheel or anything, so why ban it? From what I know, in StarCraft a lot of people change how often windows reads a button press when a key is held down in order to que up units faster. It's just a quality of life feature, so I'm not sure how a layout that makes certain moves easier to pull off would be considered an exploit. What is your perspective on that? Why did you advocate for banning it?
My issue was that it wasn't intended for Clutch's movement. It caused him to be too fast in a way that isn't balanced. It may even be why they nerfed his movement too much over the years causing him to always be an A tier pick and not S tier. I advocated for banning it because its just too good and causes Clutch to be too powerful with closing the gap with shield or escaping / dodging shots. Also I technically wouldn't be able to use it because I use scrollwheel to jump. In order to use the exploit you would have to bind scrollwheel to a movement key like forward, back, left/right. I understand your perspective though. In any other case I see zero issue with people having a certain binding that is accessible to all players. For example, I went on Rapha's stream maybe a year ago and jokingly said "you should use scrollwheel to jump, its superior" with a funny emote to show I was joking. He responded very seriously saying that he "wouldn't use scrollwheel to jump because its cheating or the same as cheating because players in the past in Quake Live would bind cheats to their scrollwheel." Personally I see zero logic in this thinking considering cheaters can bind a cheat to any keyboard or mouse binding they want. I don't see how scrollwheel is something so bad. To this day Rapha & others have never given a good explanation of that. A few people messaged me after that saying it was a very weird comment for Rapha to say and didn't make any sense. Seemed like he was just passive aggressively trying to call me out in specific. Which again, is odd. I've never cheated or used any exploits. Many players have odd bindings, like Toxjq, or myself. I don't see how its suspicious but I've heard other players say similar things like Rapha but with no basis in reality. If Rapha truly thought using scrollwheel to jump was an advantage then he would be the first person to abuse that. Its not an advantage, so he doesn't use it himself. Its just personal preference and something I brought over from my CS bindings or any other FPS I ever played I always used scroll up/down and space bar to jump. There are actually more disadvantages to using scroll as jump in my experience. I've had many moments where my scroll inputted by itself because it rolled down or up on its own causing a jump I didn't want which ended up giving my position away on the map due to the jump sound or I would end up jumping in the middle of a Lightning gun fight and lose because of it. Its actually hard to make scroll work for jumping and not some kind of cheat like rapha claims.
@@SIBquake Talking about the speed being so unintentionally high, why not go the other route and not reduce it/introduce other mechanics that would bring it more in line with what was intended? Something like a speed cap or a short time based cool down on a dash seems like it would add more nuance for the character, since now the player needs to be more technical. Instead of hopping all the time, players would need to combine the dashes with circle strafing, which I think would be an interesting balancing act of when to use clutch specific movement. Though, looking at it now, since QPL is over and there wasn't a Quake World Champions tourney on the last QuakeCon, it's safe to say we're beating a dead horse here haha. As for Rapha, he seems to be tilted almost 24/7 for the past few years. I don't know what to think about a lot of his comments like that, since to me it feels like they come from him due to being demoralized.
@@SnortingBaguette Yeah it is what it is. Not much to do about it now. A lot of things could make Quake better and tons of improvements that should of happened never came. My future videos will be me discussing what Quake needs, how it can be better, what is hurting it, and so on. I hope to see you around! Happy Holidays! I appreciate the conversation.
