  • Draisine ride across the hills from Teaca, Bistrita-Nasaud county. The climb was over a meandering route including gradients as steep as 5% (1 in 20). The draisine is powered by a Ukranian made 350c.c. single cylinder air-cooled two stroke engine. The crew and three of the four passengers were fueled by a bottle of tuica!
At the summit level was the remains of a station which which had been staffed by a couple, the man looking after the track etc and his wife managing the station including selling tickets. Although we didn't see any habitations near the track there are villages within two or three kilometres.
The 0-8-0 locomotive "resting" in the former station yard was built to a Polish design by August 23 Works (U23A) in 1949. It last steamed over the hills three years ago but the track has deteriorated to such a degree that it can no longer support the weight of this relatively large 760mm gauge locomotive.
