In this vintage interview, host Mick Garris chats with master filmmaker Steven Spielberg about his science-fiction epic, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (1977).
I saw this interview yesterday and I'd like to thank you so much for it. Spielberg is for me the most important influence. I'm from south of Brazil and been making films since I was able to... Spielberg is the real dream maker..and Close Encounters is the great Spielberg film for me. Thanks a lot!!
Man, This is great stuff. Great interview, and the awkward wide shot of Mick and Steven sitting in silence waiting for the intro music to end is so endearing/hilarious.
Great interview! I think it would've been cool if Carpenter & Spielberg could've been interviewed together in their prime. Do you know if Spielberg was a fan of JC's films?
u can tell this interview was done before mommy dearest was made cuz he speaks well of joan crawford. i doubt he would talk nice about her post mommy dearest. he prob wouldve avoided mentioning her at all.
The director's cut of Close Encounters is THE definitive version. It combines scenes from both the 1977 version and the 1980 version to tell the complete story of Roy's descent into madness as he feels compelled to create his ultimate Devil's Tower monument in his living room, which fully explains why his wife took their kids and left him. Plus Roy's view inside the Mothership has been rightfully deleted.
Apparently the addition of the scene where Roy enters the mothership was the price Spielberg had to pay Colombia to be able to shoot the scenes he wanted to insert.
This was a turning-point interview for the show... and my professional life. Glad you're enjoying these!
Mick Garris Interviews This is such a great interview! What did you think of him, Mick? :)
Thanks. He was and is great. I had nothing but great experiences with him over the decades. This was a great introduction.
Thanks :) He seems like such a humble and down-to-earth guy :)
Great interview sir!
@@southlondon86 Thanks!
From 1971 to 1983, Spielberg was incredible. I love many of his later movies, but his early period was superb.
Thanks. It's great to see people enjoying these little trips to the past.

I love that Raiders of the Lost Ark was soon to be released at the time of this interview. Really interesting.

Like to watch us squirm, huh?
As someone who works in public access, I empathize with anybody squirming in front of a camera lens. Thanks for posting all this great footage!
This deserves more views.
The Hound we have to stumble upon them.

Great interview, but where can I get Steven's open sweater? This is urgent!
It’s interesting that Steven now says he wishes he never did the special edition.
This interview was recorded in early 1981?
Retrocade Podcast Yes.

He certainly did!
Carpenter said in an interview he didn’t care for Spielberg’s movies and said Close Encounters wasn’t a good film. Wonder if he still feels that way.
for whatever reason i really enjoyed boring left brain cheap tv stuff like this as a small child...anyone agree
Haha, yeah!
Where was this originally broadcast or what cable channel?
It was on the Z Channel in Los Angeles in 1981
De que vuelan vuelan
Read the book Situation Red by Leonard Stringfield. There is eyewitness testimony that read like scenes from the movie.

He spoke about her in a interview last year for fabelmans says he never knew Crawford of mommy dearest and doubles down she was lovely
