DDR5 having a standardised dedicated interface for peripheral controllers (e.g. for RGB) is going to be such a lifesaver for security. The existing implementations often just expose the SPD SMBus (I2C) to unprivileged users, which opens up all sorts of holes and makes a total mess of the platform security model.
I don't think an exposed SPD-only SMBus is a huge deal for security as the only thing you'd be able to do is reprogram modules (if they're not write-protected), potentially bricking the system. I would be much more concerned if _other_ devices are also exposed.
@@eDoc2020 exploits like rowhammer do exist. Having access to it could allow making sidechannel attacks more likely to succeed, or even just possible where they weren't before.
@@ANDSENS Perhaps that is a risk, and I definitely think unprivileged access to a hardware bus is bad. However I still wonder why manufacturers don't just write-protect the EEPROM as an additional precaution.
Actually I just looked up the 24C02 datasheet and only the top half gets write protected, so that's one reason. Still, they could use a different chip if they wanted to.
@@eDoc2020 The issue is that the SMBus for the SPD is often shared with other devices, particularly on laptops. Also, many drivers expose *all* SMBus interfaces, not just the one used for SPD, and often other interfaces too (Asus asmmap driver is a good example)
@@ANDSENS rowhammer is not made easier by this type of access. there's no side channel mechanism that requires SMBus access.
Like I did with DDR4 and DDR3 before it....I'll wait a year or so before making the jump to the new spec. It always coincides with a fun upgrade anyways, so good to know it'll be all solid by then.
They said it will take approximately 2-4 years for ddr5 to be at equivalent price as ddr4 is now.
how about waiting with your dd4 system until ddr5 is about to be superseded by ddr6 just like i did with my ddr3 system recently
i mean you have to get a whole new mobo and cpu anyway so…
with the shortage going on I'd say one year to get it on the market and a second years before prices even move.
I still have ddr3, my old xeon is still handling most games just fine.
Thanks Linus, as an American I cannot understand anything without the use of gun metaphors!
Lmao
I really love Linus' analogy on the port systems.
DDR4: M4 Benelli (M1014 for US Marines), Saiga 12, USAS-12, SPAS-12, SPAS-15 and AA12
DDR5: DP-12 and Neostead 2000
"DDR5 desktop platforms are right around the corner..."
So like, in about three years when we can actually get our hands on it for a respectable price? lol
Let's not forget that it takes the same amount of time for there to be any reasonable use case for needing them as well.
Just as soon as DDR7 comes out it’ll be cheap for a week…maybe two.
Even at a reasonable price for a new module of DDR5 and buying a new motherboard for DDR5, I don't think it's worth it. It's new. There are kinks that need to be worked out and will be. They'll see some modules give off too much heat and redesign them. In another year or so after release itll be better probably
You will be lucky to get them for respectable prices within 3 years, I say min 5 years later you will be able to buy second hands onces at respectable prices.
U wish-
Dance Dance Revolution 5 looks different than I imagined, good for them to completely remove the gameplay and convert it to a stick of RAM instead, simply phenomenal.
the coolest guy in town is the man who's at the arcade dance dance revolutionizing the entire area
I can't wait for my games to now load up in 1/3 of a second, then take 10 seconds to check in with a server, instead of the plebian 1/2 a second (+ 10 second server check-in) it took with DDR4.
Loading times depends on SSDs... or am i wrong? And when direct storage is used it should make a difference from Sata SSD.
@@Z3t487 depends on how much of the relevant data is still in main memory (Cache + RAM). The system always pages memory in those locations before looking in HD. If everything your game needs to load never left RAM, then that particular loading instance doesn't have to wait for the drive.
@@JustownerThis reminds me of on the ps2 you could take out the disc and most games would still run until a load screen because the level was stored in RAM.
My computer is going to wind up so fast. Imagine what I could do with all the 1/16 of a second I'll be saving. That's like a whole day in a lifetime.
@@KalElinabox Most ps1 games stored levels in ram and streamed music in real time from the disk, so you could just swap the disk to whatever music you wanted as long as you didn't hit a load trigger.

You guys did an absolutely amazing job on this. The animations and the way you explained some very complex concepts was incredible. Keep up the great work!
DRAM is a capacitor matrix and the recover you mentioned is the memory refresh. Capacitors loose charge with time and tiny ones have very little charge so a refresh circuit must read and rewrite the memory content all the time - and that becomes critical if a part of the matrix has been used for a time (reading) and a refresh mush be done right after that.

128GB RAM sticks becoming standard? Python and JS programmers high fiving each other right now.
Looking forward to MS Teams using up 70GB of RAM.
The usage probably won't be bigger than the application itself or the project total size
1TB ram incoming
4tb per chrome tab
python ain't that hungry tho, fck node it freezes my laptop when running react dev server with vscode & UA-cam In parallel.
Put all your Node modules on your ram disk
I've been teaching for 4 years, and this channels fantastic verbal explanation along with incredible graphics to supplement it is really inspirational. Cannot believe I get to enjoy this content.
it truly is amazing
Very cool and awesomely informative video! Excellent job here bro!!! 👍❗
lmao at "Dance Dance Revolution"... waiting for new version of that as well
Awwwww, so after 15+ years since being abandoned, the +5v line will finally be making a comeback!
"It's my time to shine!"
I't wasn't completely abandoned, USB ports used +5V all the time.
And just in time for the 12VO standard making it more expensive because now the motherboard will have to act as the voltage translator from 12V to 5V.
@@edge21str and 12vo is supposed to be more efficient. I wonder how efficient it will be to go from 12V to 5V to 1.1V
Is that the Noctua 3070 on the test bench I see?
no
Hopefully they'll review it some day, given Linus' admiration of Noctua.
yes
Is that a verified youtuber trying to scalp views with a pointless comment that I see?
@@twizz420 yes
Its Crazy how fast pc components get better now
Man I remember the Skylake and DDR4 launch like it was yesterday.
The real question is, "How many channels will this one reach"
I'd love to see how big the server boards get with this one.
To be honest, even once the DDR6 comes out, I'll probably still be running the DDR3 and i5 4000 series I have atm
SAME!
same but i7 4930k and ddr3 in quad channel mode: still a beats
I just upgraded from 2000 serious i7 and ddr3 ram, just before the ddr5 come, and i felt little stoopid watching this, otherwise feel so super to upgrade bro its like i used time machine or something to whole new world 😂
@@amystery5238 that's the exact problem I have, I know it's not worth getting anything new, since things already run well on that I have plus I don't play games, but instead use it for office and multitasking. It's just that the pressure comes from all the content on social medias kinda feels like you're left out, when you see everyone's beautiful custom built computers, with all the newest components and stuff.
DDR2 to DDR3 performance jump was so big compared to DDR3 vs DDR4
ill move to DDR4 when DDR5 becomes pretty common
That background music was actually really good! Could you share the name of the track?
RAMs can last a very long time even manufactures is so confidence they even come with a lifetime warranty.
I am very curious about the early releases of PMIC on the programmable DDR5 RAMs though
That makes me remember. How fast time moves and how fast LMG has grown up!
ua-cam.com/video/2WNLNjzBfHQ/v-deo.html
Holy hell you just got cheese by bots
I don’t worry about those pesky bots. I just report them and let UA-cam do the job!
LTT and famous channels have been targets of scams for a long time already and UA-cam doesn’t do anything about it.
When I first started building systems there wasn't even simms. I had to insert each individual memory chip into a socket on the motherboard, 36 of them just to get 4mb. A quarter of the motherboard was just memory sockets. Ah the good old days.
Yes, i remember those rails of ICs:)
Which year you come from, time traveler?
@@jeschinstad So you must also remember the Turbo Button on the case. The forerunner to overclocking. Press it and go from 8mhz to a whole 10mhz cpu speed. LOL
@@kenogster3059 IBM's "Turbo Button" actually reduced clock speeds.
@@General_Griffin I never said it actually worked LOL. I never noticed any difference.
I’m still on Dance Dance Revolution ultra mix 3. Can’t get enough of it
Thanks for the informations. This help me a lot to understand...
Linus: “How can we appeal to the American audience more?”
5:35
If the gun analogies weren't inaccurate to real firearms, I'd agree lol
Also, yep, I'm American.
@@donovansiers9422 I thought inaccurate analogies were appealing to American audience, too.
Reported for racism

You mean the US money? We don't all like the guns, but we love and/or need the green.
Gun analogies oddly accurate, very appreciative! Helped me understand a lot better
Accurate implies you already had the knowledge and understanding of how they work. Your comment makes no sense
I'm not sure how useful it is though, at least the dual 32-bit lanes. If you only need 32-bits. Well, a lot of data is pointers and structures, so 64-bits or more. And that extra data didn't really cost that much more time. For your CPU to just throw it away is probably already included in the fetch cycle. (I'd need to double check but worst case is a bitwise and... so 1 clock cycle of one ALU.)
2:20 omfg I bought that exact ram fan for my first PC build 🤣
It feels like it's been an age...
What is the background music called? I love it!
"Daaaance Daaaance Revolutioooon" - Oh, the references are from WAY back.
Really nice to see the progression of LTT's motion graphics quality improve over time. Good stuff!
After I plugged the Trident Z5 in my PC, smoke come out of the Ram.
I made after this a closer look and under the cooler I can see tiny hairs of the heatpads.
0:33 "breed of ram"
I'm sure I've heard this elsewhere
