When you reach tier three of the Mimic ability, you get the power to turn into the robots of Talos 1...
    These bots can fly.
This means that in areas with those robots, you can fly around for as long as your brain juice will last you. I tried flying to the top of a VERY high pillar in, I believe it was the hardware labs? Anywho, I just wanted to see how high the game would let me go, and to my suprise, upon reaching the top, I found a small amount of loot. Just some ammo and fruit, nothing super special, but the fact that they made something to reward players who went exploring was amazing. The areas are so chuck full of secrets and mysteries, I woudn't be suprised if we'd missed a little container somewhere.
The game hands you a bunch of tools, and says: Have fun.
Do you want to carry around a turret that you can upgrade and repair, and upon seeing enemies, you deploy it AND become a turret yourself? Sure! Have fun, become the gatling gun of your dreams, and enjoy the limitless ammo.
Spell slinger? Sure! Enjoy your alien powers!
Total pacifist? Possible! Really annoying, but possible!
A fun challenge is ONLY using one active alien power to beat the game. You may only turn into objects to sneak, or turrets to fight. No using weapons or tools. Good luck.
Much like Dishonored, the difficulty is a player choice, and not needed for achievements.
Do you WANT to play at the hardest difficulty, and not use ANY neuromods at all?! Sure! They're not needed at all, have fun!
It never felt like a railroad, it felt like a loosely walked path, that said "go in that general direction"
How, was always up to you, the Player

Well said. I finished the game once but there is obviously so much more to do. I finished it, but I barely *played* it.
This was actually the first game I ever played on the PS4, it was free so I probably would have not played it otherwise. One of the most memorable moments for me was having the bright idea to actually check out the space shuttle in the distance. For most of the game I had assumed it was part of the background like the Earth, or the moon. Like you, I figured, 'what the hell', how far can I go? Well when I realised there was another piece of the puzzle there I knew I had stumbled onto a bloody beautiful game.

Prey is one of the best games I have ever played. Hands down.
I love how much thought and care Arkane put into each and every facet of this game. For instance- Talos one is designed like a space station that people could legit live in and do their research. How would goods move between different points in the station? The GUTS tunnel system. How would you generate oxygen and water for the entire station? Must be the reason for the Arboretum and the water filtration system’s existence. How would such a huge space station generate power for its needs? There is an entire section of the station that’s a reactor for this purpose. Between the game’s main story and many side missions, you will probably have a mental map of the entire station and all its shortcuts that you’ll probably use a shortcut to avoid the longer path.
Find a locked door and you haven’t invested in the hacking skill? No worries. Use a gloo gun to find a vent or a recycler charge to remove a heavy item. There is always another way. God! I could go on about this game for hours!
My only complaint about this game might be the loading screens, but at this point it really seems like a nitpick.
Seriously though. Arkane Studios might probably one of the best devs in the industry. I just wish more people would give Immersive sims like this a chance.

I said it when the game came out and I'll say it again: The GLOO Gun is on-par with Half Life's Gravity Gun as one of the most inventive weapons in a video game ever. God of War's Leviathan Axe got a lot of praise for being so multi-dimensional, but it's nowhere as close as to what the GLOO Gun offers in terms of creativity and player expression of intent.
Prey got totally overshadowed in 2017 by Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, Persona 5, and Horizon Zero Dawn, but it was my GOTY for that year despite having played and loved all those other big hitters in the year. I still do multiple preythroughs of the game with different mods and constraints. Mooncrash is an absolutely stellar expansion and Typhon Hunter can result in some hilarious shenanigans.

I still remember my first playthrough of Prey. It was unlike any other game I've ever played. No, it was not just that. At the beginning I was like "okay, cool, so I can do 'a crazy idea', how about 'another crazy idea'", and after some time I stopped asking myself such questions, because I have already assumed, that at any given moment game would allow me to act just like my physical body was on Talos I. And all of the impressive systems that game has, really helped to sell that illusion.
And I do agree, that GLOO cannon really embodies many of mechanics and motifs of Prey.

This video is epic, it really lets you see how genius the Gloo Gun is, even if you haven't stopped to think about it. I think one of the best things about Prey tho is a lot of the same thought behind the Gloo Gun went into pretty much every other weapon in the game to some degree. Every weapon serves it's own unique purpose, and even tho Prey's arsenal is pretty small compared to other FPS games, they all exist to drive some aspect of the Immersive Sim gameplay.
The Wrench is your ammo saver (and if you so choose, you can straight up build your character around the Wrench) , The Pistol and Shotgun are your standard mid-ranged and close-ranged killers respectively, The Disruptor Gun is great at both stunning enemies long enough to easily kill them, or to outright kill mechanical foes efficienty, and the Q-Beam can actually be used both to kill tougher enemies easier, and to conserve ammo if you know how to use it's overload thing correctly. Even the Nerf Crossbow is way more useful than you'd ever think, since if you're creative enough you can use it to open doors from a distance, or to just distract enemies. Then you have the Grenades which are just as cool, starting with the Recyclers being a grenade/tripmine combination. But since they turn the stuff they suck up into materials you can use to craft things, you can use them pretty creatively to help fuel your crafting needs. The Typhon Lures admittedly kind of lose a lot of their usefulness later in the game, but early game when the Typhon can kill you extremely easy they're lifesavers. Same kinda thing with the EMP grenades, only for the mechanical enemies. The Nullwave Transmitters help a lot against the more advanced Typhon, but someone who wants to go around saving people is going to end up getting a lot of mileage out of them, since it's by far the best way to knock the posessed people unconcsious so they don't explode.
And none of that is even skimming the stuff you can do with the Psi Abilities, let alone the entire Neuromod system and how it makes you feel like a badass overtime. Everything in Prey you can use to your advantage is less about killing things and more about being tools you can use however you can imagine using them. Every little thing you can do in Prey is about rewarding you for your own ingenuity and creativity, and I think it's easily the best game of the last decade for that reason in my opinion. It's straight up one of my top 2 favorite games of all time, along side System Shock 2.
TL;DR Prey is based, you owe it to yourself to at least try it if you're into immersive sims, FPS/RPG games, hidden gems, or just, yknow, good games in general. It's legitimately one of the most rewarding video games I've ever played, I can't really express in words how good I think it is.

    • @adams13245
      @adams13245 9 місяців тому

Right these games are all about having a ton of multi use tools at your disposal, and combining them together in creative ways. I think a problem with the genre's fan base is that they often confuse side objectives or features as the main reason to play. Hell, the term immersive sim implies these games are aiming to be a 100% copy of reality, which Prey is manifestly not. You're on a space station fighting shapeshifting mind controlling aliens and can use material from said aliens to turn into a coffee cup and roll around. It feels incredibly frustrating when fans proclaim these games need to be realistic, or first person, and get side tracked for an imaginary standard of purity. Have you heard of Mimimi? They're a German dev who made Shadow Tactics, Desperadoes 3 and Shadow Gambit. These games look very different from Arkane's games; they're top down with multiple characters to control and higher difficulty. Thing is from my playing of them, they have a lot of the hallmarks of Arkane's games; you have a variety of abilities with varied uses that you're encouraged to combine together to accomplish a mission. In Shadow Gambit one character has a short range teleport that can be combined with her time stop skill, which freezes a single enemy in place and renders them unable to see. Combine them and you can much more easily get around guards. Another character can summon a concealing thicket, which you can use as a safe space to move to with blink. Shadow Tactics and Desperadoes 3 also seem to have similar ideas, and I think a major plus of these games is the higher difficulty. I remember going through all of the final level of Dishonored 2 with only blink, my sword and choking guards. In Shadow Gambit the guards are numerous and your health is low; the difficulty I play on gives you only 4 hitpoints. This means you're constantly challenged and are encouraged to use all your abilities to their fullest. Shadow Gambit has you unlock characters as you play through a campaign and take any unlocked characters on any mission; however you effectively gain a special resource after a character has sat out of use. It's a neat way to get you to vary up your tactics. I'd recommend you check Mimimi's games out!

Its just too good to be a popular game. Its just like system shock 2.. Anybody who played it back then said it was the best game ever to be made, but it was way too complex, too farfetched to be enjoyed by your typical audience and sell well

@@erradate6425 I dont agree, the immersive sim made a pretty big comeback in the late 2000s/2010s.
