    Music & Lyrics: Tony Kakko
    Mikko Karmila at Finnvox Studios
Mastered by Svante Forsbäck at Chartmakers West
    SONATA ARCTICA is:
Tony Kakko - Vocals & Keyboard
    Elias Viljanen - Guitar
    Pasi Kauppinen - Bass
    Tommy Portimo - Drums
    Henrik Klingenberg - Keyboard
    Lyrics:
    Far in the skies
Where the stars attach to the strings
You have seen angels fall, when a monster clips their wings
    Darkness tonight
    Someone whispers in the void
The loveliest things in your ear
You’ve been warned, you must avoid
When you hear the bells, heed the call
Tread without a fear, my friend
    On your shoulder we behold
A monster only you can’t see
    Anymore
Can we keep the rain abay
    Once, you were sliding away
All the way down, without a rail, you
    Tried a new way
    Driving everyone away
Your eyes cannot lie like your face
There is no glory in disgrace, but
    Friends are near
    We are here
    We still carry all those
    Things you believed in, asshole
    We have bent the rules
    We have lied
Loved and known you’ll rise again
Friends will do all this for you
    Child is aborn
Oh so feeble in this place
You are the guide they adore
Hopelessly lost within a maze, but
    Friends are near…
    We have bent the rules…
    We will bend the rules
    We will fight
Help you, we will win tonight
Spread your wings and you will rise
Sure, your mind weighs like a boulder
There’s a monster on your shoulder
    Words and phrases, meanings, faces
    Virtues, vices,
Your luck’s based on balanced dices
We are you, you are us
    Always, you’re one of us
    Respect, asshole
You don’t know just how much we sometimes have sacrificed to be there for you
Your keys and the keyholes once will be found
    Dreams and reality, aligned
You’ve grown and found things you thought were left behind
Smile and you will see this world smile back at you
    We’ve bent rules for you
    We have lied
Loved and known you’ll rise again
Friends will do it all for you
    We will bend the rules
    We will fight
Help you, we will win tonight
Spread your wings and you will rise
    We will bend the rules
    We will fight
Love and know you’ll rise again
Friends will do all this for you
    We will bend the rules…

I absolutely love this. Through my lonely childhood Sonata Arctica was always there and helped me through so much. As an adult i have been blessed to see them 4 times live and definitely gonna make it a 5th. Tony's voice is just so comforting and warm, it feels like home

@@NorthernWolf92yeah, sonata arctica was with me through some of the darkest times of my life. I always felt tony’s lyrics in my heart, ever since i first heard the power of one on the silence album. I actually seen sonata live with nightwish years ago, and ran into tony on the side of the street. I said hi, and got a picture with him. The truth is i wanted to say so much to him that night, but i didn’t want to come off as crazy, or a fanatic. I always thought about writing him a letter after that night. I just wasn’t sure on how to go about that. After all of these years i am glad they are still making music.

I feel like the song is a message directly from the band to us, the fans. Tony lied when he said he was going to keep creating the music that he wants to do in his own way, instead they went back to their roots to help us win whatever we are going through. That’s what this band is, a friend that helps you get through hard times. That’s why so many of us are die-hard fans. And we are assholes for all of the times we complained that we didn’t like a song lol.

I've thought about this. On one hand if a band doesn't like the music they produce, they aren't gonna stick around long. Yet the fans who were attracted to a style of music may not be thrilled when things change. I've grown away from a number of bands because of this. It's always great when bands find a way back to their roots.

“Assholes” certainly refers to the “fans” who moaned and cried on the UA-cam comments on all Sonata’s albums for the last ten years. “i MiSs tHe oLd SoNaTa” …that crowd. Instead of appreciating a new sound, they whine about every album release

    • @nicksevenow
      @nicksevenow 4 місяці тому +5

@@FrakintheboX 10 years ? It's been since 2007's Unia which might be their most creative and complex piece of art to this day. The Days Of Grays is simply fantastic, the overall composition and work with instruments such as organs make it a must-have. I only found Talviyö a bit under, but it still has great songs and I listen to it from time to time.
No one has to force themselves to like anything but saying everything after Reckoning Night is bad shows you simply have bad taste or you didn't pay attention to the music.
And since the drummer isn't full-speed blasting all the way through 10 songs anymore those whiny lil bitches can't be satisfied so... But this band is way more than just that and if I speak, those self-absorbed elitist metalheads don't like Sonata, they like just 4 of their albums.

Maybe you’re that one? You might be an asshole, but you’re OUR asshole and we can see through all that, see the real you, and help. The more I listen to this song, the more I get the feeling that it's about drug addiction/depression. They already touched the topic in 2001 song "sing in silence" (the monkey slowly climbed on her back", referring to drug addiction). Many parts of this song remind me of that ("On your shoulder we behold/
A monster only you can't see"..."Can we keep the rain abay/Once you were sliding away/All the way down without a rail/You tried a new way/Driving everyone away/Your eyes cannot lie like your face/There is no glory in disgrace"). This is the vibe I'm getting from this song, and I love it. I could be wrong though, I read in another comment that it could imply a message to us, old fans, being the "assholes" and listening to the song under that perspective, also makes sense. In any case, it's a great song with -finally- a great sound (sorry for being the asshole :)))

What an odd, great little song. Breaks a lot of molds for typical song writing, lyrical rhyme scheme and vocal phrasing are unique and refreshing. It sounds like it could belong on their "Pariahs Child" album, which I think is their supreme masterpiece, not only song wise, but production/sound wise. This new tune is kind of proggy, kind of ballady, Queen esque, and not overly flashy on the bands end, even the guitar solo isn't demanding the listeners attention at the expense of the song as a whole, although I would have liked to hear more ripping considering the guitar is quite tame on this track. Everyone seems to be out of the others way while still contributing to the song. I'll give it a solid 7.1/10. And if is this is a taste of what the new album will be like, I'll be more than satisfied.

Already liked First In Line, but this one is amazing! Really love how the structure is changing during the song, finally the mixing sounds clear, it has that "wintry" feeling and Toni's vocals are beautiful! 🤍🐺❄️
My personal favourite Sonata-era are the albums from Winterheart's Guild to The Days of Grays, and both of these new singles do remind me of their feeling, which I love. Can't wait for the whole album 🎵

Met these Guyz at town pump whitefish while working there while taking care of my parents on hospice just before they died. They gave me a guitar pick and pointed at Big Mountain sayin' " we've traveled all over North America and this is the only sight that reminds us of home"

Solid tune, it carries the spirit of old Sonata Arctica well. I generally wish i can hear synth parts more, some line are hard to listen, especially harpsichord melodies. That is why i liked first two albums very much. All those blistering fast lines i hear perfectly. :)
I`m glad i heard the song, it transend me to my childhood and days when i started studing , i was not parting with Ecliptica or Silence not a single day.

You know, I wasn't fully into this song on first listen but every listen after that has seen it really grow on me. I still think the chorus is a little long, but I really like the verses and weirdly long bridge to the solo. I'm very excited for this album. Song sounds a little more like something you might hear on Pariah's Child rather than early material, but that's fine by me. We'll be getting solid variety in songwriting from the album if these first two songs are any indication. I have no idea what to expect next and that's kind of thrilling. But best of all is the mix and sound quality is way better than the last few albums. I'd love a copy of Talviyo and Ninth Hour remixed and remastered. Ninth Hour has actually turned into one of my favorite Sonata albums over the years.

I love the songwriting in The Ninth Hour, but the audio quality makes it their worst album for me, and I am no audiophile. I need to listen to it with high-end equipment to make it bearable.

First impression of the lyrics - it sounds like the narrator is speaking to their own internal 'monster'. Criticising their past actions and acknowledging that they've been protected, tolerated and indulged by their peers, despite going off the rails and making some bad decisions. Great tune IMO and hopefully lots more to look forward to from Sonata.

The official SA websitew has this.
Front-man Tony Kakko explains: “How we all may have in our group of friends that one person who seems to be a magnet for all kinds of problems, many of which he/she may not even see himself/herself. Maybe you’re that one? You might be an asshole, but you’re OUR asshole and we can see through all that, see the real you, and help. And when children arrive to the scene, they all fit under that same umbrella. Don’t worry. We’ll kick your butt up that hill.”

Sometime friends need to use clear language. Sugarcoating everything is not helpful, if your friend is in this kind of problems. That's why it fits so well.
