  • " Half a year after the events of Trails in the Sky Second Chapter, Liberl has settled into peace once again-but even during peaceful times, there are many among the distinguished and fortunate burning with greed thanks to the influence of ancient artifacts. Most of the population remains unaware of their abuses of power, but to the most enigmatic order of the beloved Septian Church, the Gralsritter, snuffing out these would-be villains and claiming artifacts in their name is as everyday as professing one’s faith in the Goddess.
    On the eve of another successfully completed mission, high-ranking member Father Kevin Graham is immediately assigned to retrieve one more artifact that rests beneath Grancel Cathedral. What’s more, even though this is a task he could easily complete on his own, he must reluctantly do so in partnership with his newest recruit, rookie Gralsritter and childhood friend Sister Ries Argent.
    Thus begins the start of a routine mission that becomes anything but, delving into a new and mysterious realm that follows an unnaturally strict set of rules: Phantasma. Therein, the history of the Septian Church and the pasts of the many familiar faces who took up arms for the sake of Liberl’s future will be laid bare…and some may have been better off staying forever sealed behind closed doors. I think your investment in Trails as a series has a large impact on how much you get out of this game. Personally, I love the lore and worldbuilding and couldn’t get enough of the doors. I also thought the personal exploration of Kevin was beautiful, and I don’t mind that it doesn’t contribute a ton to the overall story. Opinions vary pretty widely on this one, but it’s often considered one of the best in the series among hardcore fans. I understand why you didn’t like it as much, though.

    Something you said in the video that explains how deep trails can get: there is an in-story reason why those "vanish", "death", and etc. turn bonuses are in Sky the 3rd and not in the previous games. They show up here because the entire game takes place inside the recluse cube, which is a sub-system of the Shinning Ring. As a sub-system of the Shinning Ring, the element that dominates this world inside the cube is space, one of the 3 higher elements.
    In any case, trails is great, but I understand that it's also a lot, and because it's a lot, I always encourage people to take breaks if they need it and to feel free to quit playing them at any time. You should be enjoying what you're playing, that's kind of the point of video games, and if you aren't, feel free to walk away. Lots of people love trails, and lots of people hate it, it's not for everyone, or even for most people, your mileage will vary.

    I truly can't believe they let me play as all the major characters, and made me form 4 parties at the end. The best post-game a game has ever had! The ending dialogue is the #1 most affecting ending in any JRPG too -- because it's not just about THEIR farewell, but about farewells in general, including farewells to characters in games that are about to end.

    I'm sorry it didn't totally vibe with you. I've grown to appreciate TitS3 more with time, honestly. I've been trying to make a spoiler-free "wiki" for a friend who's also into the series, and it's brought back how much setup TitS3 did, even for games not yet out in the west. For that reason, it really has remained memorable for me, in some ways moreso than the earlier games.

    I think it's a good thing it's different : I would have gotten bored if I had to visit Liberl a third time. Here, it's a final goodbye to the Liberl cast, it expands a lot on the lore (Salt Pale, Bleublanc, the star door 14) sets up the Crossbell and the Cold Steel arc (that star door with Olivier, both Renne star doors), and finishes some character arcs (Richard for example).
    Gameplay is really awesome

    The 2007 version of 3rd didn't have turbo or high resolution support. Also the reason we didn't get 3rd on PSP is because by 2017 Sony no longer allowed NISA to releasea game for the PSP, they straight out weren't allowed even a digital release. (The PS Vita game was also liscensed out to a Chinese company. So that might've caused issues with sharing it with NISA. No idea about the PS3 version barely heard anything on it. But the Vita games extra features can largely be modded onto PC and it's not too difficult to mod it in)
    Honestly I've heard both people who praise these graphics and are worried about the transition to fully 3D and people who don't like them, so it can go both ways. But I do agree that they probably are keeping the series more difficult to get into, because a lot of modern gamers won't have appreciation for old game graphics. (I did hear the newest game coming in July Trails through Daybreak is a good jump on point though!)

    Haha I completely agree with you that the character art is not ideal for marketing. I mean one of the key points in marketing is to take a character's silhouette and if that character is immediately recognizable you have done a good job. I think even me who loves the games would not be able to name every character as a silhouette! But on the other hand I also love the art style and fashion sense of the characters. Because the characters feel real and practical like they live in a living, breathing world. I could actually wear any of the gear the character wear in real life and probably not feel that out of place. While you could never catch me dead in half of the clown boat gear you see in other major franchises. Like the ronald mcdonald shoes you see in a lot of Square games or the billion zippers/buttons lol. But they make for characters that stand out thats for sure!

    • @PelvicGaming
      @PelvicGaming  Місяць тому +2

    • @martinomagic9230
      @martinomagic9230 Місяць тому

      @@PelvicGaming The style gets a bit better in future games. But yeah this is just not Falcoms fortitude haha. They are basically just an indie company who has been around the block for a while. They had mostly the same people doing the art, music, story throughout their entire history as a company. Not gonna lie now that I think about it, when I first saw trails of sky FC on PSP. I thought the same damn thing, "wow this game looks extremely generic". I did not expect much at all but I ended up like so many others, a crack addict who just went through a cliff hanger begging Xseed people to give me the next hit. I was one of the lucky ones, since I didn't play it until a few years before SC released. Some people were literally waiting like 15 plus years to see the continuation, haha.

    The problem with Sky 3rd is also what makes the series overall so great for me: Like 85% of the story and character moments you get in this game are leading up to payoffs further down the line - some not even until Cold Steel. First time I played it, I wasn't a fan. Then I came back after having finished Cold Steel and Crossbell and I appreciate Sky 3rd so much more. I absolutely adore this series but I do feel like it's impossible to recommend to anyone for this exact reason.

    the 3rd felt like one final goodbye to Liberl and all of its characters, and in that regard I really did enjoy it, fanservice galore. The main plot I wasn't the biggest fan of but it is a sweet story and a good character exploration. lq ries was done dirty though, for being the only new cast member she really doesn't get a lot. The music in the 3rd is once again really great! probably my favorite with its ethereal and unique atmosphere, fits so well with the story too. Aster Home is probably my favorite track but I also really liked the battle theme and Jade Corridor~~ really wish the remaster arrangements were as strong as the first game's but they changed too much, the originals have a stronger musical identity I think.
    (whole series discussion down below so look away new people)
    also idk if this is controversial or not but I do think in retrospect a lot of the foreshadowing/hint-hint-wink-wink bits kinda were the developers shooting themselves in the foot a lil' just because I don't think in terms of the "overall series narrative" they never tie things together all that nicely and in-game it really is a pace-breaker when you find a new lore-dump door, it's a lil' too gammy to chew on. When I think about what I like in the overall narrative a lot of it is just character arcs carrying over (but that can also overshadow the new cast) and not really the lore bits (it's interesting but sometimes they retcon stuff kinda terribly or prevent interesting character conflict).

    Great review! You're actually spot on! Falcom was planning for Crossbell and realized they still had a lot of setup to do, so they made the 3rd as a way to tie all this together. This is actually my favorite Trails game. It's fanservice the game indeed, but I am fan! I just love the Sky cast and their banter, so for me it was a beautiful farewell to them and a way to tell some of those lingering stories. I also love that it isn't a high stakes adventure but a very personal story and exploration of Kevin as a character, who is definitely not you standard JRPG protagonist. And the lore buff in me just loves picking this game apart. Too bad you didn't like it as much, but I understand based on your points and I'm glad you found some things to like. At least the combat focus helps a lot for those more luke-warm about the story, as it is the pinnacle of Sky combat with the little tweaks and it provides a good challenge overall. (Cassius Bright still haunts my nightmares). I hope you do have a good time in Crossbell when you get to it!

    My advice on getting tons of Sepith/money in these games:
    1 - On Sepith Bonus turns, use/S-Break into an S-Craft that hits the enemy (or enemies) multiple times
    2 - Equip Septium Vein Quartz/other Quartz that can further boost Sepith drops from enemies (the boost you get is no joke)
    3 - Keep note of enemies that drop all types of Sepith (even if it is just 1 of each), as this is most effective against them
    4 - Alternatively, kill Shining Poms. Even better if you can do so on Sepith Bonus turns.
    For example, Lloyd's "Tiger Charge" S-Craft hits a single enemy multiple times. On Sepith Bonus turns, each hit forces the enemy to drop Sepith. And the more Sepith an enemy has, the greater the amount of Sepith you'll get with this strategy. There are a lot of characters in this series (even some in the Sky trilogy, like Estelle) that have S-Crafts that are capable of this. As long as you take advantage of Sepith Bonus turns like this as often as possible, then you'll rarely ever run into money trouble.

It's a really neat era of sound design, in my opinion, so it's cool to see a game that came out so much later calling back to that, whether or not it's intentional.

    The best way i can describe TOS 3rd is its a single dungeon jrpg with a visual novel perspective to it, a far cry departure of the first two games. How ever 3rd is very immportant because it sets up lore pieces and world building that is overarching for the entire trails saga. Also there is star door 15.. just saying lol. The good news is you will never ever have to play a game this linear again as the rest of them follow the more conventional jrpg progression format.

    Honestly Im glad I played through Legend of heroes trails in the sky 3rd chapter. I played 1st chapter back on the psp and when 2nd chapter came out same thing on psp. At the time I didnt have a good pc to work with so I didnt play 3rd chapter, I ended up playing cold steel 1&2 on vita. When cold steel 3 got announced a friend of mine who runs a gaming website mentioned to me 3 was on the way and that if I like the series I needed to play the crossbell arc which honestly wasnt even aware we were missing and arc. So i made the choice I got 3rd chapter on steam and i enjoyed the hell out of it. Played the crossbell arc with fan translation and then went into the ps4 versions of cold steel 1&2 and you see alot of the mentions and through backs. Characters mention incidents that if you didnt play the previous game it goes over your head. theres alot of lore in all these games, hell the newspapers and books play into the story as well. Definitely need to take your time and not rush the series. It is beloved by alot.

    as a big fan of this series (played through reverie) this is my least favorite game in the franchise. for a lot of the reasons you stated.
    the idea of a side story that serves as an epilogue for the previous games while dropping hints for what's next could have been good but they just executed poorly.

    It's easy to see why this is the most divisive game in the series. The change in protags and switch to basically a dungeon crawler turns off some. The weakest of the original trilogy but I still quite enjoyed Sky 3 for what it is. I actually kind of liked the structure and found it a breather after two games of meticulously searching Liberl for hidden quests and NPC dialogue, but I can see how others wouldn't. Plot's kind of nonsense but it overall serves as a nice bridge between Liberl and Crossbell's arcs.
