There were a few trolls alleging Kiptum was murdered within hours of the news breaking. On one of the Facebook groups I am in, one troll started claiming that Kipchoge was behind it the day it broke. The last post I saw had the heading, "finally Kipchoge will be arrested". This was just a day or two before Tokyo. I suspect the number of complaints to the administrator of the group eventually led to the troll being removed. One comment on one of these posts stands out to me. In some parts of Africa, although not just in that continent, the belief in magic and witchdoctors is strong. And this is what Kipchoge is being accused of, hiring a witchdoctor to put a curse on Kiptum. These trolls "backed up" their claims by saying Kipchoge didn't acknowledge Kiptum's world record, or at least not effusively enough for their liking. There were also allegations that 3 men supposedly turned up at Kiptum's home just before the tragedy. None of this is true of course. From what I have read, Kiptum ran a 40+ km long run that morning and then decided to drive home in the evening. In Australia there are signs all along our regional roads and highways about drowsy drivers dying. Micro sleeps, of just a few seconds, can end in tragedy, which is the most likely cause of the accident that killed Kiptum and his coach, not Kipchoge or a witchdoctor's spells. These accusations are just compounding the tragedy for everyone who is a fan of the sport. Thanks for the video.

Kelvin kiptum used to regard Kipchoge with respect. It is clear from his interview after he won london marathon and also after he broke Kipchoge record at Chicago. He would have hated to see people doing that to Kipchoge who he considered as role model.
As you said, Kipchoge was so excited for Kiptum, saying he might be the first to break 2 hours under legal conditions. I hate to say this, but having just gotten back from a month spent in Kenya, you have to understand that beliefs and customs are VERY different in Kenya than in the Western world. We’re talking about a place where an overwhelming amount of population still believes in witchcraft and that one can have a curse placed on them. I heard comments 3 or 4 times on how Kip placed a curse on Kiptum. People are very wary of things they do not understand and cannot explain, and to try to explain anything differently..they think you are crazy.
Jesus. They were friendly rivals---Kipchoge is a class act who's openly mourned the loss of his younger compatriot & chief competitor for months...I can only imagine what the story around Pre's death would look like if the internet & social media were around in the '70s
Kiptum would be appalled by this. I lost my father to a careless driver last year, essentially all for the sake of saving a few fleeting moments on their commute. It's a painful reality losing someone so suddenly and unnaturally but blaming others and spreading hate is not the path to healing, and it certainly doesn't honour the memory of those we've lost. The people spreading these rumours should be disgusted with themselves.
I had read the constant low IQ comments but I was hoping he had a good system to not let online trolls get to him, sucks that they did. If I was famous I would never read the comments, anonymity on the internet has losers thinking they are something special.

Man it’s so sad how delulu people are. To think Kichoge took apart in Kelvin’s death with clear not no evidence that he didn’t do anything related to Kelvin’s death is so stupid. We all knew at some point in time the 2 hour barrier would be broken in the marathon, either by Kipchoge or another athlete and Kichoge knew this himself as well. Kipchoge wished the best for all athletes that are faster than him on days that he struggles and wishes the best for those who are slower than him and those who look up to him. I wish all the best for Kichoge and his family and kids and hope they stay safe and no harm is made to any of them. He will always have my support. ❤
So basically the internet is bullying one of the greatest men to ever exist for no reason? Some people just suck man. My heart goes out for Kipchoge and his family!
I love marathon, I enjoyed watching Kipchoge break records and setting new standards. All this came about the time Kiptum broke his record and he kept quiet for a loooong time waiting for "Ratification" of Kiptum's record. Unfortunately, that sparked negativity from fans. The saddest part that most people do not know is that most marathon teams/camps are always competing, but not in a healthy way. Personally, I think Kipchoge had a hard time accepting that his record had been broken and that by itself lay way for trolling and the expectations from the local community that he, being a "mentor/role model" for many upcoming athletes, should have been "the first" in congratulating Kiptum. It's sad that it has all come to this.
Merci d'avoir fait la lumière sur cette affaire. Même si des personnes avaient des doutes au sujet du décès de Kiptun, de là à proférer des menages sur Eliud, il y a un grand pas. C'est inadmissible de faire cela
That's crazy. The day Kiptum died the idea of Kipchoge having something to do with it came to my mind, but as a silly daydream for one second, just as you might daydream about what if elefants are from mars. And now I hear that there are people who really BELIEVE this.
Why are people so easily led by miss information?? You can say anything about anyone at anytime. The internet is a wonderful thing....but not this time.
Since the internet came into existence it has been the avenue for all kinds of junk, threats, insults, theft, scams, and all kinds of evil. Parents need to teach their kids that you can't trust most of what you se or read. There is no way to police the web. it is too invasive and pervasive. We need to police ourselves and our contacts. There was nothing I looked forward to more than the marathon duel between Kipchoge and Kiptum. Stay safe and be loved.
I am not sure which is more bizarre: That someone would threaten another person based on online misinformation that is not even plausible. Or that 90% of the people whom Kipchoge had considered his friends have abandoned him. I really hope that Kipchoge can find comfort in the other 10% and that some arrangement can be found such that he and his family is safe and he can focus on his training. It would be a tragedy if Kipchoge would also be lost to running because he felt he could not keep going.
I'm only making assumptions, I know nothing about Kenya, but it may have something to do with how safe Kenya is compared to other countries. People leaving Kipchoge might just be afraid they could be targeted as well with no real means of protecting themselves. The problem with conspiracy theories is that it's so hard to convince people that are not rational with rational facts.
This is just horrible and the people who did this should be ashamed. Kipchoge wouldn't hurt a fly so I have no clue why they did this. This also explains the sub-par performance at the Tokyo Marathon and I hope he can do better at the olympics.
So sad and disgusting. Maybe he should have made a clear and friendly statement praising Kiptum's exceptional abilities (or ensure it had the expected impact if he did). This could have been done since London 2023 where Kipchoge gave the starter. This would have stopped social medias to fuel antipathy and rivaltry. I hope everything will go right for him and he may prepare the olympics with serenity.
Kelvin was a great great runner, but a bad car driver. That’s it. So sorry for his loss. Eliud is a great great runner and a great great human being, social and down to earth ( like most runners).
What a terrible loss, for all of us. Dont take the anger and devistation out on the nearest person. Keep going forward, dont stop, keep running, do it for kelvin, do it for eliud, and do it for all yet to come.
Things happening like this is why fictional villains like Thanos and the Joker actually make sense over those superhero idealogies. No one seems to make these people accountable for casually hurling threats and ruining other people's lives.
The notion that Eliud Kipchoge would have benefited from Kiptum’s death is wrong as well as vile. A Kipchoge-Kiptum match-up would have been the most exciting contest in athletics since Coe vs Ovett. Even if Kelvin Kelvin Kiptum had won, Eliud would have been a winner too because of the excitement and publicity that would have been attracted into the sport of distance running, and specifically into Kenyan running. I sincerely hope that Eliud is able to deal with this awful situation like the champion and fine human being that he is. I hope the 2024 Olympic marathon is a glorious success whoever wins it, and that the Olympic movement can overcome, just as we overcame tragedies such as the terrorist attack at the 1972 Munich Olympics. And may Kelvin rest in peace. Harambe.
That’s the most outrageous story I have ever heard! Kipchoge is a hero! We will miss Kiptum. And having both was better for everyone, competition is what drives life!
Im so sorry that peoples love for gossip and scandal has impacted him in this way. He has always seemed like a kind and generous person who has only wanted to inspire others. I believe in him. I believe he will overcome this through the strength of his spirit and continue to inspire others. ❤
This a sad true and real consequence of stupid fake news some criminals spread on social media. I wish him strenght to endure this and go back to his routine in peace. Thanks for this video. Stay Strong K.
I was going to write that the internet/smart phone/social media era has ruined society. But let’s be honest, humans have been doing that long before the internet. However, we now have a wider platform, which when abused can be devastating. More accountability needs to happen both for individuals and social media providers. Ridiculous that such a humble and inspiring athlete, along with his family, have had to go through this. I truly hope Kipchoge realises that more people are on his side than those cowards who hide behind keyboards😢.
It could be anyone in the world to make those comments online, not just in Kenya. I dont think there is a feasible way for the police to arrest those responsible for trolling.
several years ago I had the pleasure of watching EK break the world record in Berlin from in front of the Adlon Kempinski just short of the Brandenberg Tor. he has always been an inspiration for all who aspire to just be better; as runners and as caring individuals. I have cheered for him from near and afar I respect him for his decency and athleticism.
Why would his friends leave him. That makes no sense. If they all live in Kenya I would assume that is strange. They would all know the truth of the matter.
The saddest thing is that he hit the only big tree. I mean literally there's plenty of places where he could have gone off the road and likely survived.
Stuff like this reminds me over and over again of the Green Goblin quote, "The one thing they love more than a hero is to see a hero fail, fall, die trying. In spite of everything you've done for them, eventually, they will hate you." Over and over and over again we see vindictive people come after honest, hardworking people that do nothing but good work for others and their respective communities. As such, too many people latch on to what these vindictive people say and start to believe these lies are to be true. You can do nothign wrong in this world, and still be needlessly the victim of bullshit abuse. Stories like Kipchoge's reminds me of Otanhi's current situation. People on the Internet making provably false accusations all because of another person's actions, and no matter what anyone says to point them to the truth, they will ignore it. Kipchoge will sadly have to live with this for the rest of his life because there will be people that will not stop believing in a provable lie.
It's the first time I hear of this, this is completely insane. I mean even as long as there's no hard evidence linking him to the accident, why would anyone even bother with such accusations? It doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Not to mention we know Kiptchoge from media pretty well and there's just nothing that would suggest he would act like some sort of a psychopath. I don't understand.
I never thought kipchoge had anything to do with this, I only ever felt that he'd been unpleased when his world record fell but seeing that interview you can tell there isnt even a hint of badnesss in his heart, I'm really sorry hes been put through this and I think ill make an effort to watch the olympic marathon as a gesture of suport/good will
I can’t believe people are behaving like this towards Kipchoge. Especially his own country of Kenya, as he’s very humble and supportive of other people running great times. I’m a casual runner, and he’s one of my idols. Wish him the best.
I saw this baseless rumour invented and shared by little accounts on Tiktok, who suddenly got thousands of views. Mostly small accounts fishing for cheap views.
Three men did show up but they were spoken too. Was attached to his old chinese sponsorship
@@asadalbrawhether that is the case or not, I'm only suggesting that the troll who made that allegation claimed they were threatening Kiptum and his family and that it was part of the so-called murder plot. It's irrelevant really.

Nope, we still hold the same views. There are so many people in Eldoret (even his camp in Kaptagat) better than him, but because he gate keeps who gets to compete internationally, the world thinks he's the best. Saying this as someone who lives in Kaptagat.
We won't allow it kelvin kiptum was killed together with his coach if they can't give us kenyans justice and his family too then kipchoge doesn't deserve the justice either, kelvin kiptums dad insisted his son was killed but authorities ignored so no justice until we know what happened to kiptum

This is really the worst side of the internet and of humans.
Incredibly sad.
I agree and it seems that things are only getting worse.
Kipchoge is so nice. I bet these trolls were harder for him than most online...
It’s not that there’s overwhelming evidence that Kipchoge was not involved…there is NO evidence that he was involved. The former implies that there was some evidence that might tie him to it. There is no evidence or defensible logic. None whatsoever. Important distinction.
That won't stop idiots like "sleepyjoe6929" from coming up with "muh secret Kenyan Jew Kipchoge killed Kiptum" conspiracies.
I am Ghanaian and very big fun of Eliud. I have no idea why some Kenyans could even do such a thing to their national hero. Please stop this you Kenyans who are doing this.
Thank you for highlighting this. I hope Kipchoge finds peace
That completely makes sense, fully explains how he couldn't perform as well and how he only explained it as "a bad day", he didn't want to explain it.
Kipchoge likes giving excuses when he looses,he never congratulates the winner nor recognize the winner he looks for centre of attention we are Kenyans we know him and he was bitter with kelvin kiptum everyone in Kenya knew in Olympic games yes Kenya will win marathon gold but not him may kelvin kiptum continue haunting those who killed him
If he liked giving excuses, he would've done that right after the race. Instead, he chose to be humble and explain it as a bad day
@@magicboy382 he explained what hehe 😂 please we are Kenyans we know kipchoge more than you that explanation was a lie he never accepts defeat that's how we know him ipity outsiders who thinks they know him more than us
@KeruboOnkoba I accept the fact that you may know more than me as a Kenyan but if a certain person receives death threats for something its well known he couldn't possibly do right before a major marathon you don't have to be a Kenyan to understand it probably affected his performance.
@@KeruboOnkoba "that's how we know him ipity outsiders who thinks they know him more than us". That is such a dumb statement omg, not even mentioning the other things.
Anyway, I could say that about any country for any sport. For example Australia, we have a very good Olympic swimming team (One of, if not, our main sport, just like with your country with running) but I am 100% not saying I know more about a few specific people than other people around the world just because I live more closer to them or in the same country, just a stupid way to think things through.
Guess you guys average IQ scores were legit after all.
Absolutely sickening that people are doing this to such a beautiful human like Kipchoge. This makes my blood boil. This human is the most humble and wise athlete alive today. He does not deserve this.
Couldn't have said it better. A man who deliberately seeks out a simple life because he knows how much that's worth, the target of typically thoughtless but also potentially deadly internet falsehoods. This will be seen as the crime it should be one day soon
Hehe 🤣 beautiful what we are Kenyans we know him more than outsiders,he chooses those who competes internationally and never wants those who are best than him to compete, kelvin kiptum was tough one kipchoge couldn't control anything to do with him because kelvin kiptum legs were talking and Kenyans loved him and kipchoge was very bitter about it

That he really looked forward to where Kiptum was going to take the sport and he was looking forward to handing off the reins to him. It's hearbreaking that people would suggest such a thing of one the humblest men in the world.
He was never excited about kelvin kiptum I don't understand why outsiders think they know more than us kenyans, the reason Kenyans were insulting kipchoge is because we knew he never felt good when kelvin kiptum broke the world record,he never even congratulated him and always posted negative things after the record went, but outsiders will think he was good
@@KeruboOnkobarespectfully, be quiet. you are part of the problem.
It is insane to go from “he didnt congratulate him on social media after the race” to “he killed him”. Re-evaluate yourself and your values.
The internet has become a cesspool. It's a really cautionary tale, just goes to show that no one is safe anymore and your reputation can be destroyed over nothing literally.
Literally, you live your life working to inspire others, day after day, and the next day people are threatening to kill your family over nothing….
This is unbelievably upsetting. Why do people make negative situations even more negative? I almost can't believe this stuff, people are cruel when they fail to reflect.
Some people are fueled by negativity.
It's a tale as old as time. When you are at the top, people lesser than and jealous of you will use underhanded tactics to take you down.
Stuff like this is why I will never believe in the lie that we can make "Heaven on Earth". People are too cruel and vindictive for such a utopia to exist on this planet.
The power of superstition is that people confuse the "convenient" explanation for the truth.
Kelvin Kiptum died at the age of 24 in a car crash, just as the great and much loved Stave Prefontaine did. Nobody accused Lasse
Steve never beat Lasse though haha ;)
I hate to say this, but having just gotten back from a month spent in Kenya, you have to understand that beliefs and customs are VERY different in Kenya than in the Western world. We’re talking about a place where an overwhelming amount of population still believes in witchcraft and that one can have a curse placed on them. I heard comments 3 or 4 times on how Kip placed a curse on Kiptum. People are very wary of things they do not understand and cannot explain, and to try to explain anything differently..they think you are crazy.
This video deserved the main chanel.
This is just disgusting.
Thanks TRP for talking about this.
I hope TRP removes the trolls from this channel some also appeared here immediately after this unfortunate tragedy but thankfully did not return.
Please keep the info coming. I knew nothing about these accusations.
Jesus. They were friendly rivals---Kipchoge is a class act who's openly mourned the loss of his younger compatriot & chief competitor for months...I can only imagine what the story around Pre's death would look like if the internet & social media were around in the '70s
Thank you for using your channel to try to help right these wrongs.
The Kenyan people have disappointed us. How can they do this to Kipchoge?
If his country won’t support him, it may be time for Kipchoge to relocate. I’m sure many countries would be happy to welcome such a hero.
Great respect for Kipchoge, we're with you man! humble and professional athlete and an epic example for the next generations
If I was famous I would never read the comments, anonymity on the internet has losers thinking they are something special.
... pretty sure it's the death threats against him and his family and his friends that happen online, on the phone, and in person that got to him. ...not stupid online comments
@@MyExcellentOpinion I highly doubt he had "in person" death threats. It was online, certain people aren't used to online BS. I don't blame him, I can't blame the victim of something.
The species of people are doing bad when this damage can be done to a legend. Imagine the average citizen.
The whole story is troublesome...
From the tragedy with Kiptum to accusations towards Kipchoge...
So basically the internet is bullying one of the greatest men to ever exist for no reason? Some people just suck man. My heart goes out for Kipchoge and his family!
What a horrible situation, much love for kipchoge and kiptum❤
Eliud is a true champion, a gentleman. Keep going, Eliud!
The internet has made everyone hallucinate that their thoughts are actually valuable. It’s all the confirmation bias of the algorithm…
This is why professional athletes need protection from harrassment. My heart goes out to him.
This is disgusting wow! People can be so cruel
Watching you from Thailand. You are ny hero and my inspiration.Be strong.. LOVE YOU!!
@@xGshikamaru Yes, we are looking at it as outsiders. But maybe in Kenya, it makes sense. How it makes sense, we can only guess, as you have done.
Censorship is a daft idea. Who censors the censors? Who is to say what's right or wrong. Naive.
His friends know him better than any of us
Kelvin was a great great runner, but a bad car driver. That’s it. So sorry for his loss.
Eliud is a great great runner and a great great human being, social and down to earth ( like most runners).
This breaks my heart hearing about this.
People just need to understand that accusing someone of a horrible thing without solid evidence is a major crime in and of itself.
100%. Its defamation and they can be taken to court
i had no idea this was going down - i can't believe people would take this already devastating tragic event and make it more horrible.
Now this, this breaks my heart.

That’s the most outrageous story I have ever heard!

We will miss Kiptum.
And having both was better for everyone, competition is what drives life!
All the best to Eliud Kipchoge. From a supporter in UK.

Threats aren't trolling. They're a crime in many countries. Hopefully, if identified, they can be held accountable.
several years ago I had the pleasure of watching EK break the world record in Berlin from in front of the Adlon Kempinski just short of the Brandenberg Tor. he has always been an inspiration for all who aspire to just be better; as runners and as caring individuals. I have cheered for him from near and afar I respect him for his decency and athleticism.
Why would his friends leave him. That makes no sense. If they all live in Kenya I would assume that is strange. They would all know the truth of the matter.
This is truly shocking. Anybody who has said such nonsense should be utterly ashamed of themselves.
The saddest thing is that he hit the only big tree. I mean literally there's plenty of places where he could have gone off the road and likely survived.
I would say my opinion... but the entire running world would be against me. 😬
Absolutely awful!!! I feel so bad for him, it's not only cruel but it will definitely affect him for the Olympics.
Kipchoge is not only one of the greatest runners of all time but he’s also a great human being. this is so shocking and upsetting.
Stuff like this reminds me over and over again of the Green Goblin quote, "The one thing they love more than a hero is to see a hero fail, fall, die trying. In spite of everything you've done for them, eventually, they will hate you."
Over and over and over again we see vindictive people come after honest, hardworking people that do nothing but good work for others and their respective communities.
Well destroying his psyche, his training, and not sleeping for 3 days prior to Tokyo explains his performance. Hang in there Eliud!!
maybe if 90% of his friends are no longer his friends, theres another side of him that the media doesnt portray
I am really sad to see how Kenyans not appreciating their national heroe who won 2 gold medals for their country in marathon running.
There is not even soft evidence linking him to the accident. Trolls, conspiracy theorists, and idiots will not be deterred, unfortunately.
The accusation against Kipchoge is bizarre. It's really sad many people are running with such a horrible news
I'm disgusted by the behaviour of those online harrassers. And worst of all: they don't face any consequences whatsoever, while a humble human and fantastic athletes needs to fear for his life.
No WAY is he guilty of anything. Social media brings out the worst in so many.
