  • This is a must watch if you are harmonica fan. At the 2019 Harmonica Masters I had the pleasure to meet Joel Andersson, a brilliant exponent of folk and Irish harmonica and a master customiser too. As a blues player I loved hearing this completely different side of the harmonica which has such an energetic and positive vibe. You need serious skills to play like this! It was a pleasure to speak with Joel and hear him play. I hope it comes across in the interview.
    1:09 Amazing solo harmonica medley
4:43 Joel explains how he layers the different elements of the tune using tongue blocking
12:34 Joel talks about his approach to harmonica customisation
Joel begins by giving us a fantastic demonstration of the harmonica sounding like an accordion and violin at the same time with a harmonica medley. In my opinion his playing showcases the best of the harmonica's abilities and his ridiculously good tongue blocking technique which enables him to layer single notes, octaves, vamping and drone notes to powerful effect.
Joel is one of 7 people in the world currently approved as official Hohner harmonica customisers and reaching Joe Filisko's standard. In the last part of the interview Joel talks about his views on custom harps.

I caught wind of Joel years ago........he was already super solid in his style, though I can honestly say I've heard the growth in his playing the last # of years. Love your playing too Lee....thanks so much for this. When we hear different tunings, it can be a bit scary. But after hearing Joel play Easy 3rd like this, I can embrace it. Awesome!

You're ahead of the curve. I'd not heard of Joel before, so as you can imagine, I was blown away when encountering this kind of playing for the first time. This should inspire people to experiment with different tunings. I love the Powerbender but have not tried this tuning yet. But will do based on this! Thanks for watching, Lee

    OO
Amazing... I barely can't feel what the artist is doing... Distinguish techniques by ear when I listen... Thanks for sharing this.

I've seen Joel before on UA-cam. Awesome playing. It's amazing how he has so many techniques going on at the same time. Good to hear him break it down. Thanks Lee !

Great interview, love both of your playing styles and they are so different. When Joel is playing the harmonica it’s like there are multiple players playing at the same time so cool, it is one thing knowing what this little instrument is capable of doing all that it’s a whole other thing to be able to play like that. Always learning new things about the harmonica it’s huge in it’s tiny appearance so misunderstood even by me. Thanks Lee and Joel for yet an other inside information.

It's nuts how he brings all those elements to sound like two instruments at once. Plus the accuracy of the playing towards the end of the medley is just brilliant.

I wanted to buy the CD but the delivery cost was a bit restrictive. Maybe another time or another way :)

Love Joel's playing, and I have been enjoying his CD "The Irish Harmonica" for almost a year now... my only issue I have with great players like Joel, and even more so with Brendan Power, is figuring out what harmonica they are using, because of all the different special tunings.
Oh, I can get the basic key, etc... but sometimes that's as far as I can get... and I have been playing for over 40 years.
Don't get me wrong, I think their playing is fantastic, and I do use some alternate tunings, like paddy richter, melody maker, country (major 7th). minor tunings... but now I just have to get an "Easy Third" in Low D !
Some of the special tunings, at least for me, are not as intuitive, and I'm actually afraid they could screw up what I can already play on regular richter tuned harps if I spend too much time with them, and corrupt my breathing patterns.
Of course it could be like teaching an old dog new tricks !

Thanks for posting your comment. Utilising different tunings on the harmonica is both a challenge and opportunity. Shifting breathing patterns and sounds is tricky and takes time. But the more we work the mental machinery the easier it becomes. But it's true to say that players like Joel and Brendan specialise in these styles rather than blues. So it's very hard, maybe impossible, to really master lots of different tunings. You are already using lots of alternate tunings so congrats! I can relate to the thought that says, damn here's another one I need to learn! Cheers, Lee
