  • This small family farm raises cows, pigs, chickens (broilers and layers), and turkeys on pasture. The farm is very organized with an emphasis on systems and efficiency. They also house homeless men that help out on the farm.

Why isn’t everyone adapting THEIR methods. It’s so humane, so considerate of the animals. I’ve been vegetarian for six years, not because of any ethical reasons but because of a meat allergy. I eat eggs and plan on getting chickens again. I’m lactose intolerant so I prefer coconut milk. But I’ve been watching a lot of small scale farmers lately and getting heartbroken over the way they yank the baby cows away from the mother’s milk so they can make yogurt or whatever. But this way really is the most gentlest way to achieve that. His entire system is created to treat the animals humanely. I really appreciate seeing this.

It really is impressive. You can tell he( or they) have put an incredible amount of time in learning from the best, but also replicating them and adapting things to their specific farms needs. Having 3 relatively free hands also doesn't hurt. Awesome to see folks doing what they love and being successful at it!

Ahmen brother, been saying and believing that for years. If humanity loses it foothold into the land, if very hard to function. People are missing something in life and dont know what it is. That's it, closer to the land ,closer to God and family. Keep it up ,the world needs more of y'all.

They may not desire that style of life, though. I know it doesn't appeal to me , But it's certainly allowed alot of farmers to be able to build out their dream operations.

So cool to see how selective the cows are. They pick the best wide leaf grasses, and then from that grass they only take the top 1/3 sweetest tenderest part. The difference between how good the grass genetics south poll vs the black Angus was also really crazy, especially considering they are eating the same forage side by side everyday.

I would be more interested in their layer operation. I noticed he said that the layers wouldnt make it over winter supposedly leaving the assumption that they will get rid of them either through slaughter or selling and he said that they would get a new flock next spring. I wonder if this is a repeating process every year or how he winters the birds if he ever keeps a laying flock over winter. New chickens need atleast 6 months to start egg production and if he is getting rid of his layers each year he is only getting eggs 6 months out of the year? There must be more to the story. Great video though. I really enjoyed it. Very informative.

Hi Josh. I am wanting to run chickens on my pastures here in South Africa. Do the chicken tractors go over the same spots only once a season or can they go over the same area multiple times a season? I know Joel Salatin mentioned something about too much nitrogen put down is also not ideal. Would appreciate any advice.

Ahh...he's been farming long enough to realize more mechanization for convenience sake can be off-set by the fact that " ( wheels on the chicken tractors) are just another thing to break or go wrong." . Yep ! Not that the wheels aren't worth it/work fine for some, just that keeping this fact in mind when u think of another thing u want to buy or have or etc., can make or break how stressful your farming life becomes !

Josh, what do you when you raise more pigs than you were to market directly to customers? Back in my day when we grew hogs in the field we marketed to hog buying stations. Where do you sell the extra hogs? Thanks Darrel
