Another piece that had me holding my breath until you got it finished. What a wonderful way for your Great Granddaughter to remember what a wonderful person her Great Grandpa is. Thanks for sharing Phil.
We held our breaths for you during this turning. So proud you didn't give up. You are an artist for sure. Well done Great Grandpa. I hope Lilliana understands how truly lucky she is..
Phil, I’ve watched your videos for years, and I love coming back and watching these old ones just as much as I hope for a new one each week. Always such a master of capturing the beauty in the wood, especially with odd and challenging pieces like this. They way you work and talk through your process is invaluable to newer turners like myself. What a priceless gift for Lilliana. Fantastic work as always, and keep on keeping on! 💪🏼
Well, Phil, you've done it again. You took a piece of wood that most people would burn and turned it into a really beautiful piece. You never waste a piece of wood because of your skill and eye for creativity. Congratulations on the new family addition.
Phil congrats on the addition of your newest great grand daughter. The bowl is beautiful and is unique and a one of a kind piece, that’s what makes it special. Nice work as always.
Phil, what an amazing piece! I was praying that the root ball would hold together for you and I’m so glad it did! What a testament of your skill. And to name the bowl for your Great Granddaughter is an honor. Bravo!!!!
That is beautiful Phil. What a gift for Lilli to treasure all her life. Congratulations and thanks for sharing. It’s another great Friday. Jules, Droitwich, England
That's something for Lilliana to treasure Phil, a wonderful gift. When she looks at that in years to come she will know what a truly gifted artisan her great grandfather is. Absolutely beautiful Phil I'm in awe of your skill and dedication. 10 out of 10 mate !!!
Once again a superb piece Phil. I am always in awe of your foresight and understanding of all things "awkward", you make it look easy, which is the sign of a true craftsman. Excellent explanation of your methods and reasons for doing what you do. Great video my friend. Take care Mike
Phil, the natural man! There is something intrusive in the plastic addition to a great piece of nature when resin is stuck in spots that, then, can’t be seen or felt! It is one thing when resin and wood are created to be a cohesive whole from the beginning. Another when it is added to form structure, visible glue. Your forte is your companionship with a piece of tortured wood bringing forth these glorious celebrations, both visual and tactile. Do what your heart wants that you do so very well. And thanks for taking all of your acolytes along with you!
Thank you so much, Joanne! I watch other turners that do use resin and can admire their work. Andy Phillip comes to mind. He is a genius with it. It's just that it's not for me. I do prefer to see and feel the nature in a piece that I have worked with. Phil
What I think..... flawed perfection at its finest, I love the bowl , one could place it in a waiting room and everyone would pick it up and roll in every which way and marvel at its smoothness and roughness. Congrats on the newborns.
Phil....you are amazing.....the piece is AWSOME I am recently retired and new to turning...BUT......when I grow up, I want to be just like you. I am learning a great deal from your videos....please keep up the great work.
Ah, "recently retired." I like the sound of that, even though I've been retired for awhile. It just sounds relaxing. Good for you to have found woodturning, Ken & Terri Moore. It's a great hobby. Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment! Phil
I'm only just seeing this video, for the first time. I trust you have great joy in your greatgrandkids! What a cool, well-ventilated bowl! Perfect for apples!
OMG. What a great phone call you got. CONGRATULATIONS. Now about this turning, I truly thought I was going to see you for the first time give up. But thanks for being as stubborn as I am. It’s definitely a one of a kind. Maybe it’s just me but when you were holding the bowl I could clearly see the outline of a hummingbird on the side of it. It’s a very special piece for I’m sure a VERY SPECIAL little girl. Thanks for doing what you do Phil. Lar from 🇨🇦
Thank you, Lar! I will definitely go look for the hummingbird. When you have a piece like this there are often images to be seen if you look a little. I like to do that and usually point them out if I see them. I may have been too excited in this particular instance, but I'll have a look. Phil
Well Phil I am a day late watching this video. We were camping with 2 of the grand sons and had no reception. So the first thing I did was check for new videos. I have to say when I saw you hold that root ball up I was remembering the hot days we had down here in Oregon so I figured you had them as well and was suffering from Sun Stroke! lol...just kidding. Wow it turned out incredible. Like you said it has so much to offer. You turned away everything you could and still have it end up in one piece. Every little area is has something to offer. I would say Howard's was the perfect finish for it as well. Nicely done my friend! Oh and for the important stuff....CONGRATS ON THE GREAT GRAND DAUGHTER! A very special gift for you and while you were turning such a lovely piece. Gary
Thank you very much, Gary! I hope you had a great time camping. It probably felt good to be disconnected for a few days. It seems only fitting as a gift for Lilliana since I was turning it when she was born. Maybe she will become a turner! Relax and enjoy your weekend, Gary, thanks again! Phil
Yes it was nice to be away. But always nice to be home. Lilliana the Wood Turner sounds great...hope she lives close she can learn from a pro! Take care buddy, Gary
What a study in contrasts! I can tell just by looking how smooth the sanded areas are. I hope someday your little Liliana is able to view this video and see how much love and care her great grandpa put into her treasure. Congratulations on your new granddaughter and another wonderful creation.
Phil, the beginning of a life is in its “root ball”. The Heart of the tree... yes, when so many root balls are treated as trash, it falls to the heart and hands of a wood turner like you to remind us all of just how beautiful the heart of life really is. All physical life ends but not all can be captured like this in its God given splendor. Thank you for your vision. Russ
I must admit, when I first saw this piece of wood I thought, "What in the world could be made of that mess?" But once again you proved me wrong and pulled a real beauty of a piece out of the woodturning magician's hat. Thanks for sharing. See ya in the next one.
WOW! x 2! Never expected THAT! From our shrub?! WOW! Thank you so much for bringing us all along for the ride. It is definitely an object de arte! It can hold all the air you can put in it, so there's that, as well. My friend, you turned that beautifully! Thank you from both of us. WOW!
Never could have done it without you, Dave! It did turn out well and I love it and so will Lilliana. Thanks to you and Claire for sending it along! Phil
Wow Phil you really did it, it is absolutely magnificent and breathtakingly stunning. I love everything about it the roughness the shine and smoothness it is awesome.
Phil, congrats on the great grandchild. I know it is who you are but look through the eyes of your followers. You are artistic and have great skills. Thanks for showing us a side of turning most of us would not think about or consider trying. The Amur Maple and another piece are on their way to you.
I had to watch the video to see where I would use a glue block. You can't be talking about the top so you must be talking about the bottom when I was having trouble developing a tenon. I just don't see the advantage, Valerie. I would have to turn away the glue block not knowing what I would find, under it. I'm sure you could do it, along with the rest of the turning world, but it's just not something I can see myself using. Maybe someday on some piece of wood but you're right, I just don't think about them. I do appreciate you watching and your suggestion, however. Thank you very much! :) Phil
Hi Phil, As a lot of others have already said congratulations on the birth of Lilliana. That is one superb bowl and is in the top 3 of your creations in my mind. I'm going to be a Grandfather for the first time in January and you have just made my mind up of what to make to celebrate the occasion. I'll send you pictures of the bowl when I've made it but it won't be until January 2020. Cheers, Huw
Phil… first I just want to Thank You! Whenever the world gets too crazy and I need to tune out I find myself seeking you out (your UA-cam channel that is. It relaxes me, calms me and is quite mesmerizing. I am not sure how I found you… I don’t normally watch UA-cam and know nothing about wood working. But I do LOVE WOOD! I have often carried pieces that I find interesting home from the park or even gone back with my car if they are too big🥴 I have bought unique pieces at flea markets on several occasions. I love your work and I really enjoy your commentary. I find myself telling you to put on a glove often😳😬 I especially like your pieces with a lot of NATURE in them, be it worm holes or finding koala bears. Root balls are my all time favorite although between the sand, dirt and rocks…. Maybe not yours At the end of each video you sign your finished pieces (as any ARTIST should) which leads me to believe you possibly sell them somewhere? If this is so I would love to buy one of your pieces. Are you affiliated with a store or gallery? Thank you for providing me with a much needed safe place to escape! 🙌
What a fine comment, Cyndee, thank you so much for this! 😊 I think root balls are my favorite turnings as well. Not because of the rocks and sand but in spite of them. So many possibilities and so much nature in one piece of wood. Yes, they are often a lot more work but just as often, they are worth the effort. I would like to be able to sell some of my work, it's getting very crowded around here, but I just don't have time for packing and shipping. Maybe one day I will have a helper. 😊
Thank You Phil. Very much enjoyed your descriptive approach to your projects. What fun you had on this one Phil. Thanks Dave (Calmwood Creations) you really gave Phil a very thoughtful piece to ponder. Phil I like that you are NOT a resin guy. I like that you respect and work with what you have naturally instead of using the "P" word (plastic). Phil you have certainly found your calling as a wood turner. I always look forward to your Thursday show. Phil you are not just turning wood. You are turning a mysterious adventure every week. Happy Birthday Lilliana.....TM
Very cool, really impressed with how you stuck with it to complete it. … and I get to view this just about a week after your great-granddaughter has turned 2.
Phil there are times when I wish my vocabulary was stronger, this is one of those times. Simply amazing. Thanks Phil. Congratulations on another great grandchild 👏🙂 All the best. Craig
Congratulations on a new arrival in the family. I declare Phil, you take the most unlikely candidate for turning and somehow make it into something that's amazing. Congratulations on your turning job as well!
That is an amazing, gorgeous piece of wood. Congratulations on your new great granddaughter, and what a lovely symbol of your artistry for her to treasure in the future!
Phil, this is beautiful! I liked what you said about resin - "I'm more of a leave it like you found it kind of guy." I couldn't agree more - in fact, your turning is what has inspired me to embrace imperfections in the wood and incorporate nature's additions into my pieces! Thank you for showing how beautiful the rough edges can actually be!
Happy birthday to Lilliana! That's a great present for her. I really enjoyed hearing your thought process around how to approach this root ball, and I'm totally with you on resin. Some people have done very nice work with resin, but I'd much rather see a piece that's just made out of the wood that nature gave us.
Gee Phil, I was exhausted just watching you tackle the outside. What a great piece and moreso as a birth day of your latest g. Grand daughter. Every video leaves me in awe. Thanks for putting in the time, patience and energy. J
Belated congrats Phil, this is approaching the best why because it’s so unique maybe the seed of life with all its intriquet form very fitting if it was great job I wish I knew how you see this in a piece of wood.👍
Hi Phil.. Isn't it amazing what a wonderful woodcarver mother nature is. You've taken a natural work of art and enhanced it to a beautiful man made work of art. Lilliana will treasure this all the days of her life. Thanks, Jerry
Thanks again Phil for us to see this amazing challenge that you have set yourself, you explain everything as in the process of creating a real Gem. Your a Diamond in the rough of the woodturning. 👌👏
Congratulations on a beautiful piece of art! Congratulations on the Great granddaughter Lilliana!!! I've had very interesting two weeks! Had a new granddaughter Ruby, then 11 days later another granddaughter Lillian, then the next day a new stent inside another one with scar tissue in it that I got a year ago. Life is good! Love your videos Phil! Keep on turning! Respectfully, Kevin
Hi Kevin and thank you! Sounds like you have had a busy couple weeks! Congrats on Ruby (my mother's name) and Lillian (my grandmother's name)! I'm glad you are healing up and yes, life is good! Thank you for watching and commenting, Kevin! Phil
Nice work Phil but you have so much more patience than I do! I'm working on a rootball now - cleaning, drying, trimming. It will be mid-winter before I feel it's dry enough to play with and then it's into the pressure pot for an epoxy bath. I hope my results are half as nice as yours.
Would you be able to flatten out the base and glue a piece of scrap to it so you could make a tenon and keep more of the original root/timber? I am very new to this and mainly just watching at the mo so happy to hear if this is not a clever idea!! Lol 😁 typing while watching..... glad you found your way with it! As always your work is just beautiful! Thank you
Yes, Terrie, you can absolutely do as you suggest. I don't think that way. I tend to just try to use what I have the way I've found it. For me, it's actually simpler and more straightforward and quicker, too. The day may come when I will use a glue block, it just hasn't happened, yet. Thank you so much for taking your time to watch and comment, much appreciated! 😊
Hi Phil, What a gorgeous creation that is, and so fitting to dedicate it to your new great-grandchild! Congratulations and well done! Best regards Lars
Hey Phil ... I'm about to embark in wood turning and I'm just starting to get my feet wet in joying your channel immensely. I'll be enrolling in 6-week class soon so at least I get headed off in the right direction. For newbies like me I would make this request, at some point during your video I guess towards the end let us know how much total time you've got spent on each piece. It'll keep us in the right frame of mind as far as our coming along as we learn. I enjoy your channel immensely God bless and have a great day.
Howdy, Bill! Thank you so much for watching and commenting, much appreciated! I could not pinpoint how much time I have in each piece, but I can generalize. I'm old and retired, not in any particular hurry to finish anything. I work short days, usually about four hours, maybe five. I usually turn the outside one day, the inside the next day and finish up on the third day. I guess an average per piece would be 8-10 hours. How cold it is in my unheated shop can have a huge effect on how long finishes take to dry. Sometimes I can spend a couple days extra just waiting for that to happen. Hope that helps! Phil
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Thanks so much for the quick response Phil. That helps a great deal, in general time was about all I was looking for. It was more question Spawn from excitement about the craft and anything else. There are three or four of us that are about to pick up are 5/8 Bowl gouge for the first time and we all agree that yours is our favorite wood-turning Channel. I personally enjoy the fact that you're not doing cookie-cutter items and you're not afraid to jump on the character pieces and as a result you produce a finished product that is second to none. Enjoy the rest of your weekend
HI PHil. I was sitting on the edge of the chair all thru this one. Great job. Glad the tendon held up. Your ggd with love it later in life. DOnt forget a video to go along with it. Ron.
Great idea about the video, Ron. I'm trying to think of what medium to put it on, who knows what will be available in the future to play it? LOL! Thank you! Phil
Mountain View Turning what a treasure! Your great grandchild will have an eternal and lasting token of your gifts that made this gift for her. And, I, too, like things ‘as they come’, then accept the challenge of working within that framework. Enhance Mother Nature, if you will.
Great Granpa has skills! Nice piece Phil, that was a really interesting turning and I was expecting it to go flying off the chuck anytime during the process.
Another piece that had me holding my breath until you got it finished. What a wonderful way for your Great Granddaughter to remember what a wonderful person her Great Grandpa is. Thanks for sharing Phil.
Glad you enjoyed it, Chris! Maybe it will help convince her to go into woodturning? Who knows! Thank you so much for your great comment! 😊
We held our breaths for you during this turning. So proud you didn't give up. You are an artist for sure. Well done Great Grandpa. I hope Lilliana understands how truly lucky she is..

Glad you enjoyed it, Mark, thank you! Yup, she just turned two a couple weeks ago. 😊
Congratulations on the new arrival Phil and also congratulations on holding that root ball together whilst you turned a fantastic looking bowl
Thank you, Steven, I appreciate your kind words!
Phil
Thanks for explaining how you decide what/how you will work with the wood.

Congratulations on a new arrival in the family. I declare Phil, you take the most unlikely candidate for turning and somehow make it into something that's amazing. Congratulations on your turning job as well!
Thank you so much, Robert! I appreciate you taking your time to watch and comment!

So glad you like it, Frank, thank you!
Phil
Absolutely beautiful. Congratulations Mr. Phil and that’s awesome present priceless
I'm so glad you like it, Donald, thank you for your kind words!
Phil
Phil, this is beautiful! I liked what you said about resin - "I'm more of a leave it like you found it kind of guy." I couldn't agree more - in fact, your turning is what has inspired me to embrace imperfections in the wood and incorporate nature's additions into my pieces! Thank you for showing how beautiful the rough edges can actually be!
It's just so true, PTSDog, it's hard to improve on Mother Nature. I'm glad you agree and happy you like this one. Thank you very much!
Phil
Happy birthday to Lilliana! That's a great present for her. I really enjoyed hearing your thought process around how to approach this root ball, and I'm totally with you on resin. Some people have done very nice work with resin, but I'd much rather see a piece that's just made out of the wood that nature gave us.
Thank you very much, Karl! I'm happy you agree, there is some great art with resin, no doubt about it, but I'll stick with what I know.
Phil
Nice one Phil
Thank you very much, Ron, I really appreciate it!
Phil
Love your pieces! 😊
I'm so glad, Danielle! Thank you! 😊
Absolutely LOVE this piece. You're best ever. I wish my name was Lillianna.
Thank you so much! 😊
Gee Phil, I was exhausted just watching you tackle the outside. What a great piece and moreso as a birth day of your latest g. Grand daughter. Every video leaves me in awe. Thanks for putting in the time, patience and energy. J

Phil
Belated congrats Phil, this is approaching the best why because it’s so unique maybe the seed of life with all its intriquet form very fitting if it was great job I wish I knew how you see this in a piece of wood.👍
Thanks so much, Jeff! 😄
Hi Phil.. Isn't it amazing what a wonderful woodcarver mother nature is. You've taken a natural work of art and enhanced it to a beautiful man made work of art. Lilliana will treasure this all the days of her life. Thanks, Jerry
So nice to read your kind words, Jerry, thank you very much!
Phil
Thanks again Phil for us to see this amazing challenge that you have set yourself, you explain everything as in the process of creating a real Gem. Your a Diamond in the rough of the woodturning. 👌👏
Gosh, thank you very much, Laurie, I sooo appreciate your kind words!
Phil
Phil
Great piece as usual, another great fun and very informative video.
Congratulations and happy birthday. Well done again 👍🏻👏🎂
I'm so glad you like it, Steve, thank you very much!
Phil
Beautiful and congratulations!!
Thank you very much, Art, I appreciate your comment!
Phil
Nice work Phil but you have so much more patience than I do! I'm working on a rootball now - cleaning, drying, trimming. It will be mid-winter before I feel it's dry enough to play with and then it's into the pressure pot for an epoxy bath. I hope my results are half as nice as yours.
Like your mom told you, Tom, patience is a virtue! LOL! Enjoy your experience with your rootball!
Phil
Phil, Lilliana is Beautiful.. I have to say.. I heard Edna giving you direction the entire time.. She wasn't going to let your quit... great work..
Thanks, Kenny, I appreciate it! She talks to me all the time, guiding me in the right direction. She knows I won't quit!
Phil
Cool bowl Phil, did not think you could finish it.
Glad you like it, Pieter, thank you very much!
Phil
Way too cool man!! I could look at that for hours!! Wood is absolutely the Best!!
Thank you so much, Larry! Agreed, working with wood is the best ever!
Unbelievable that you was able to finish that one!
Agreed! 😊
Priceless gift! One day in the future Lilliana will treasure this bowl that her Great Grandpa made for her!
I hope I can teach her to turn her own, too, Geoff! 😊
Looks great 👍🏼
Thank you, my friend!
Phil
Hi Phil,

Congratulations Phil and family with the birth of Liliana. Wow wow wow wow!!!!
DOGGED DETERMINATION!!

Mountain View Turning what a treasure! Your great grandchild will have an eternal and lasting token of your gifts that made this gift for her. And, I, too, like things ‘as they come’, then accept the challenge of working within that framework. Enhance Mother Nature, if you will.
Thank you, MVT!
Phil
I will assume this is meant for me, Joanne. Thank you for your very kind words, much appreciated!
