I am a novice painter in my 60’s and have learned so much from watching your videos. I love your style and precision. Please keep up your videos and would love to see more on your colour mixing as this is an area I have so much trouble with.
Gaye Jennings : Same here, I started about a year ago and moved after my first Bob Ross type painting to Michael’s style. Both have their place, but I like the realism in Michael’s style.
Me too. I can't go forward until I get drawing and color mixing down first... please get the beginner (that's me) started with more drawing and color mixing. I love every single painting you do... and love the fact that you explain what you're doing every step of the way! Carry on ♡ I am going to be a hyperrealistic oil painter in the future and you are the person I want to follow to get there!
So helpful! Thank you for taking the time to slow it down and walk us through. I use a similar palette setup but hadn't thought about the non-reflective glass nor placing the photo under the glass for color matching. Such great tips and I'm going to try both. Color mixing is my challenge and the way you keep mixing from what you have down makes so much sense.
I've always loved Art since very young and tried to Oil Paint many years ago. I have 3 landscape paintings but they are mostly awful. I am reworking one of them now, with your wonderful guidance. I've learned so much so far from you, and I'm confident it will turn out fine. Thank you so much. You are changing the world!
Thank you so much for the brilliant trick with the glass over a photo. I certainly will be utilizing that! Your videos are fabulous and your talent stupendous!
Great work. It amazes me that there are people out there that their life is so boring and that they are such a pathetic person that they actually take their time to dislike a post like this.
Learned a lot of important and helpful things from this lesson. Using this block in technique will definitely help get me proceed in a direction that establishes better color matching and harmony in my paintings.
Underpainting seems to be key. In fact, I would venture to say, this might be one of your most important videos. I have watched it and re-watched it probably 50 times and it never gets old; it’s that important. The back painting of this picture could almost pass for a completed painting, were the method stylistic-reality instead of photo-reality. Reminds me a little bit of “paint by number“ which I did as a kid.
Thank you very much Michael for sharing your painting techniques. I have been working on some paintings myself and I wanted to take them to the next level. I think your techniques may do just that. Keep up the great work and again, thank you for sharing.
Every body loves you Michael , from the comments below its wonderful,,,,, i love it as well but have great doubt that i could ever be a painter ,,,, your the most my man !
Very useful, thanks *M.J.S.* Hope to see much more of what goes on, on the pallet. It's the hardest part I think, and totally neglected by most other online teachers
So much good information here...love the pallette set up with your reference photograph to color match for block in!! Very good advise for a matte glass too!
To be honest, I never thought of using acrylic first, and then using oils...... Thanks. ... I just finished an imaginary seascape, which has turned out super!
Another interesting benefit of using the grey palatte is that if you actually make it half-value grey, it will be easier to see the value of colors. For example if a color is a darker or lighter value, you can judge it easier by looking at the mid tone grey next to it
I laminate my ref photos as glass usually has a very subtle blue tint and the paint casts a shadow onto the ref due to the thickness of the glass. Laminating also makes it more portable.
thats a great idea putting the picture under glass and mixing your paints on it to match. So far I've done 5 paintings and thrown out 5 computer monitors.
Could you talk about your studio lighting set up in a future video? A lot of artists struggle with getting it right which obviously effects colour mixing, values, matching etc.
That video was very helpful. I plan to begin experimenting with painting soon, and this gave me a lot of very useful ideas and information. Thank you so much!
What are you using for an easel? I like the fact that your's seen stable. I have a somewhat expensive easel and expensive is not always the answer. I also appreciate this particular video very much. Thank you.
I wondered why you remixed the green for the trees, why didn't you just do all the green trees at once? Also, I didn't realize that blocking in with acrylics is a common practice. I have had issues with getting my oils to cover completely, having to resort to double coating.
If you paint the nearer trees and further trees the same color, even if they are the same species of trees, they'll look like they're all the same distance and that makes the painting look flat. This is a over simplification but the greens will look cooler further away, warmer closer up. It has to do with atmospheric haze.
Hello Michael, what value of gray do you use for the panel under your palette? Thank you very much for going into such detail in describing how you mix and apply the block in colors. The way you work is very logical. Your artistic eye is breathtaking. Just simple perfection. Again, thank you so much for this lesson.
Thank you. Appreciate your teaching style 100%. Please how do you keep your paints from not drying out while mixing especially under your camera lights?

Your ability to mix the colour you need, especially when you get to the oil painting stage, is superb. Thank you for your videos.
Thank you James for your existence, keep going like this, because it's people like you that make the world so much better !!
So true . Selflessness
I'm red-green colour blind and I tried your method of colour matching today. Happy to say it worked very well, I'm told. Thank you, James.
Your landscape painting is the most realistic I've ever seen.
Detailnya sempurna...terimakasih atas sajian videonya pak..

Really, it is very impressive what he paints, and, more when he explains very carefully, thank you MASTER!
Brilliant! Thank you for the more in-depth study of the blocking in. Looking forward to joining your new website very soon.
Oh this is great! I use a glass too, but it isn’t non-reflective. It still works pretty good though. Now I can do this better. Thank you!
Thanks! What an ingenious way to do color matching! I've noticed a lot of artists using glass palettes, time for me to give it a try.
Always enjoy your painting and tips for aspiring artists like me. I’ve learned so much from you and I sincerely thank you!
That's a really good idea using the photo reference under a clear plexi as a paint palette.
I know, right? One of those genius things that you wonder why you (or anybody you know!) never did it!
Underpainting seems to be key.

I love the photo under the glass as your palette. It will help a ton with color matching. Time to go non reflective glass shopping!
Really appreciate the help with mixing colors!

I really hope you will consider continuing on to the next phase w this project!

@@readhistory2023 this was not the finished paint but the blocking in stage and colors were just approximate.

Sou artista a mais de 20 anos, suas arte são maravilhosas.👏
Regarding the brush marks and gloss you mentioned in the sky...do you varnish your work? With the right matte/gloss mix you can hide a lot of that.
Belo trabalho ! Muito realista , Parabéns!
Thank you. Appreciate your teaching style 100%.
Please how do you keep your paints from not drying out while mixing especially under your camera lights?
