The Brutal Murder That Ignited Denmark's BLM Movement

  • Phillip Mbuji Johansen was killed with a knee to his neck a few weeks after George Floyd was murdered. The killing by two brothers - one with white power tattoos - took place at night, in the forest on a remote Danish island. It took just two days for police to declare that it had "nothing to do with race." The case is probably the most racially charged in living memory in Denmark, and has forced many Danes to confront the issue of racism in their country for the first time.

Another observation is there was no mention from the opposition about the boys family. They were not with the boy’s mother at anytime. What happened to the assailant’s mother? She did what Emmet Till’s accuser did-distort the truth. I highly doubt Phillip actually and with clear motives, purposely touched his “friends” mom’s breast. For example, one of my coworkers passed out and was unconscious in the office of a pharmaceutical company. When I called the emergency (Danish 911) I heard in background " her name sounds African. She'll be ok". Emergency refused to do their job, I drove her directly to hospital for emergency surgery. Let this sink in, it is 100% true.

I try to see things like the border situation with children in cages who may look different than mine as essentially the same as if mine were isolated/imprisoned. For reference I am a US born Mexican-American, lived my whole life in Southern California. It’s interesting… this whole racist/racial discussion. I understand how there could be a large portion of white/Caucasian people who might be frustrated over “incessant” whining or non-stop playing of the “race card” as if it’s something non-whites or minorities use to trump an argument or shut white people down. Especially when said individual may not feel that they themselves are racist. But to reiterate something that has been said over and over before, until you have lived as a black/brown or non white person in a white majority society you will simply not understand. While I feel like I look obviously Latino I have passed for white before. I often forget that I am a “minority”. That is until I am rudely reminded of that fact. While I don’t let it bother me so much, it’s definitely a hard feeling to describe. Imagine never being given the benefit of the doubt in any situation. Imagine immediately being second guessed by people and when attempting to find common ground, being denied full stop before given the opportunity to be heard. And ALL because you are not white. It is very disheartening. So if by chance you find yourself as a white person and feel or have ever felt contempt for the discussion surrounding race I urge you to reevaluate your reasoning. You are always heard, seen and accepted and considered “normal”. The instant that is challenged you get upset. We live every day feeling this way. Until you recognize that, you won’t fully understand. Simple as that.

    • @SmokeyChipOatley
      @SmokeyChipOatley 2 роки тому +10

@metamorphosis in process I think you either misread what I wrote or got the wrong message entirely. I never implied that black/brown people aren’t racist or are not capable of being racist themselves against whites. They most definitely can be and I don’t condone such behavior nor imply it doesn’t exist or is somehow “not an issue”. What I’m referring to isn’t as simple as having two random black ladies smack talk you simply for being white. The core difference between what I’m attempting to describe and what you’re likely describing is an inherent power imbalance. Not to downplay shitty racist behavior by minorities towards whites, because that is real and it’s bullshit. That being said I don’t quite understand how I’m being “entitled” by pointing out the fact that if you (as in a random person) are part of a cultural majority in a country/community/etc. you cannot fully understand what it feels like to be an “outsider/minority/etc.”? To clarify, this only applies to countries with a historically white-majority rule. Like I said previously, it’s difficult to describe. But that shouldn’t be a reason to dismiss it outright. Chances are we’re still not going to fully see eye to eye but I hope you at least understand that (at least in MY case) I’m not here to vilify you because then I would be a big hypocrite. The only reason I’m so vocal about it is because I can sit here and list every single time I’ve been directly verbally attacked for being Latino and list every word used but I cannot translate that feeling to you because no equivalent words exist for white people and the few that kinda exist and might be “offensive” don’t convey the same sting because we grew up in a society with white people in control. I hope that sums it up for you, in the most well-meaning way possible. Thanks for replying by the way. No sarcasm.

I’m having so many thoughts and emotions while watching this.
As a mom, it’s especially heartbreaking to see this mother crying for her son. In the US we’re very vocal and have a long history of publicly recognizing the racism in our country. Then you have these other European countries, majority white, that love to deny the racism that exists. When I see this group of supposed friends talking, in their faces all I see is white people wanting to assure each other and believe that they couldn’t possibly be racist themselves, or know anyone that is.
Many white people would take offense to what I’m saying here, but oh well. Many try to lecture Black and other POC when somebody us voice our distrust of them, especially the ones that straight up say they do not want to deal with them at all. They want everything to boil down to individual actions, and ignore the bigger systemic and societal impact of racism.
This is why I speak openly to or around my kids about these issues. I’ll be damned if they grow up and become the token to “friends” that are clearly and openly racist.

As we were sitting near each other the family and I started talking. The parents seemed nice enough but they went off to do something while the son continued talking to me.I don't remember exactly what we were talking about, but somehow the topic of being mixed race came and up his response was: Who wants to be mixed race?" For someone so young to have that sort of hateful opinion says a lot about the people he comes into contact with. And as an obviously mixed race person, I definitely took offense. His comment has always stuck with me, so sadly, I'm not that surprised that this hate crime occurred in Denmark.
Side note: For any minorities thinking of traveling to Denmark, The Netherlands, Germany or Austria you should know that all of these countries share very similar ideas about race and equality. Similar as in they all believe that they are progressive, yet none are.

@Tuy Randolph So get your governments out of their countries' affairs and then they won't have an excuse to come to yours in the first place. No more oil from the middle east, no more diamonds, food, or other natural resources from Africa and every single white European goes back to Europe and has no authority in any other region of the world. You ready for that? I hear a lot of talking but no actual DOING.

Many fascists and white supremacists start out as the victims of bullies. If Phillip was also bullied (as this 58 minutes makes painfully clear) then they could have been "childhood friends"... it's called trauma bonding.
More likely, the entire island is small, and "friendship" is simply "we grew up on the island together". The only real friend I saw, realized how toxic culture on the island was... after Phillip was brutally murdered...

When we say “BLM” we are not saying other lives don’t matter.
We are trying to bring awareness to the cruelties that people of colored are subject to based only their ethnicity.
But this is often a common reaction among Europeans.
“The Gueto Law” is not racist because it’s not called the “anti-colored people law”.
You can have racist tattoos, and call people racist names and tortured a colored person and people still say that you are racist.

this is such an eye-opening piece to someone who lives in a very split red/blue state in the United States. I experience racism and BLM protests alike and as a white woman it is still heart breaking to see my friends of color being treated unfairly. Seeing how absolutely brutal it is in other countries just makes me more adamant on making sure our generation realizes just how important it is to be inclusive. It really brought tears to my eyes at the end when they quietly spoke their sayings for Phillip at his place of death. The amount of respect these BLM protesters had and the amount of disrespect the ALM protesters had in this piece were so eye opening to someone like me. This was truly an amazing way to portray this event in a way that can reach all audiences correctly on this topic.
