  • There are so many different options when it comes to finding the right helmet. You have choices between full-face, open-face, modular, and shell helmets. The helmet you choose will make a big determination in how well you are protected.
In addition to finding the style, a rider needs to make sure the helmet fits, not only in size but also in head shape.
This week let's talk about motorcycle helmets and look at a few of the options available.

A friend, wearing a 1/2 helmet, went face first into cinder ground cover when he crashed his bike at about 30MPH. I wasn’t there that day but they told me the blood poured out of him faster than doctors could put it in. He died within 12 hours. So very sad. He was a nice man who, momentarily, lost control and it cost him his life.
I once crashed under similar circumstances. My full-faced helmet had a huge scar on it. The nurse told me I wouldn’t have walked out of the hospital had I not worn that helmet.
I respect everyone’s right to wear, or not, the gear of their choice. I am simply sharing my experience.

Here in Europe many modular helmets have an official approval to be ridden with the chin part in the up position. There are even some helmets on the market on which you can move the chin bar as far as to the back of the helmet.

Kevin, I started riding while in the Navy and they required motorcycle safety training class (which the provided) prior to riding on base. During the class they required all the safety gear. Since that is the way I was taught that was the way I always rolled ATGATT!
Fast forward to retirement and I started riding with several retired men from my church ( all large touring bikes) and none ever wore dedicated safety gear. I was still ATGATT, now they are starting to wear proper gear.
I wear a full face helmet with clear outer visor and prescription sunglasses and on those really bright sunny days or when riding looking into the late sun I drop down the tinted interior visor and really like it!
Stay safe and maybe I’ll see you on the road.

I don't want to be a troll, but, shoei makes a flip-up which can be worn with the flip raised and even added an extra, stronger detent for it. Some even have dual homologation, both as jet/open-face and as modular/full. But i do get your reasoning and agree. Personally, considering the latest heatwaves, I gotta say I love a flip up, at least for city riding 😉

Commuting daily, and being very tuned in to the visibility of other riders, I say go with a white helmet-it sits like a beacon on your shoulders announcing your presence.

I wear a full face whether on my Harley or my GoldWing. I became a true believer after a friend of mine was killed instantly from massive brain damage after hitting a cow at night on a backroad. He was riding two-up. He was not wearing a helmet. He never did unless it was raining. His wife was wearing a full face and survived with hardly any issues

Bought a $100 modular when I started riding in March, plan to upgrade to a full face non-modular (since I never use that feature anyway) sometime this summer. Was pleasantly surprised to find my local motorcycle dealer (Sloan's) has helmets ranging from entry level, to whatever you want to spend.

Thanks for the video, Kevin. Quick correction, there are several modular helmets that are homologated for both closed as well as open riding. So you can ride them both ways as a full face and in a jet configuration. (obviously with different levels of protection).

Thanks for the great content Kevin, as usual! I wear a Shoei Neotec 2 modular helmet (as worn by our local constabulary here in South Australia). This helmet is actually designed and approved for use with the chin bar locked in the raised position, not that I have ever done it. On the topic of face protection, our motorcycle police used to wear open-face helmets until a tragic fatality in the '80s. A motorcycle officer went down face first in an accident and lost the front of his head to the road; a traumatised workmate of mine saw it on the way to work. That made my decision on helmets easy. And our Police have been wearing full-face helmets since.
Keep the good work coming Kevin, I look forward to sitting down with you and a cuppa every Saturday morning! Cheers from Oz. 👍🇦🇺

For me the best helmet I've ever owned is a HJC-RPHA-70ST it's a Catbon Fiber Modular Helmet.
    Why this Modular Helment
You don't have to take your glasses off to put the helmet on. The helmet is light and has good air flow. Dark internal visor.
I like the external visor to be clear. If you put a couple of strips of Gaffers tape across the top of the clear shield when the sun is blinding bright all you have to do is tilt your head down and the tape blocks the sun just like a visor except better. The tape can be removed leaving no Mark's or residue on the shield plus it only takes seconds to put the tape on.
When riding on hot days at low speeds drop your internal shield while raising your external shield.
I always wear a do rag to keep my helmet clean plus I pull the do rag over my ears when putting the helmet on. This keeps my ears from rolling over when putting the helment it also helps the helmet slide over earbuds.
    That's my 2 cents

I use the modular helmets with built-in sun visor -- though those "features" compromise weight, extra wind noise, and perhaps a bit of safety as compared to full face helmets without those features.
    Always tradeoffs to consider...

Interesting topic, thank you for your opinion, Kevin! I like modular helmets, there are ones designed (and homologated) for open riding as well as closed, however I prefer riding with a closed one. (I make exceptions for when I ride my bike to my garage after parking it in front of my appartment to unload but that's less than 200 m.) Even then, they're more comfortable because in order to have a drink I would have to take off my glasses (I need them to drive), take off the helmet which usually dislodges one of the ear plugs, put the glasses, drink, reinsert the ear plugs, take off glasses, put on my helmet and finally put on the glasses. They're also popular among instructors for obvious reasons, they do not want to carry two, not mentioning a half helmet is illegal here AFAIK. (The ECE test appears to be designed so that you need the side protection to pass.) I've had 1.6 and 1.8 kg helmets and never found the weight an issue.

The modular helmets must pass the same tests as the full face helmets. They are considered to be "full face helmets". They are not a "step down" from full face. My old biker Cousin always said "If you have a cheap head, buy a cheap helmet."

Great video yet again. The Arai Signet is the only helmet I have found that fits my long oval head shape. Plus excellent quality. Just paid $850 for a Arai Signet-X Dyno Helmet. Wanted one to match my bike so did pay the extra $150 over a solid color. Only complaint is that by design, the windshield does not stay open once you hit around 40mph. When its 90+ degrees I ride with it open and use sunglasses. But have to ride with it down or keep pushing it back to the open position. I've seen some hacks people have done to keep it open but hate to do so for an $850 helmet. Might buy the Arai shaded face shield or for a bit more, their Pro Shade System which is like the internal drop down visor but sits on the outside, which Arai says is safer.

Full face is the way to go wether it be Busa, Vulcan or scooter. Max protection with full face. A good looking helmet can accent your bike, but that is far secondary to protection. Ride safe, ride long.

Man it's been hot here in Tennessee this year! I use a modular helmet as I find it goes on over glasses easier, and is very convenient for stops. When it comes to heat, I think a closed in helmet provides protection from the hot air blasting the bare skin of my face. It's funny that many riders think jackets add to the heat, when they actually protect you from the sun and hot wind.

I wore a 3/4 red metal flake in the 70s. Didn't get contacts till 77 so it worked with glasses.
Back then full face were the bubbles with the little open porthole and no vents. Now they're fine for me and more comfortable at speed than an open face.
I saw some modular model that swung open 180 degrees amd locked into a 3/4. You could ride it either way. Can't recall the make.

Great tips and reminders, man... I'm scheduled for my next helmet around Christmas (from me to me... lolz)... BUT it never hurts to get started on the usual refreshers and research before I buy something I (hopefully) won't need to buy again in 5 years or so... I'm in the mountains and experience has taught me to get a modular... In part, when you hit a "cold spot" in a full-face, it's very similar to having a white blanket wrapped surreptitiously around your face... AND the other side, mostly my asthmatic issues, full face "solid" just seems constrictive. I can deal for short periods, but I like to ride LONG periods... because nothing is a short ride from my house... The last tid-bit is maybe a nit-pick, but my nose is shaped like a ski-jump, and it can play Hell just trying to get a full-face on... I even had to trim out some of the plastic in the current modular I've got, because the day after I got it, I dropped the front piece a tad too casual and clipped the end of my nose! It nearly had my brother in hysterical laughter while I squawled and ran to the bathroom to deal with the "bloody onslaught" and put off the ride for about an hour while he laughed and I worked to staunch the situation. Apparently there's a LOT of blood-vessels in my nose...
IN any case, I'll still likely hold onto the old helmet for two possibilities... Even an older used helmet is better than NO helmet, so 1) in case I damage the new one, I still have something "passable" to ride with... AND 2) in case I find someone out without a helmet, I have a "pass me down" they can use for the interim until they get their own... on the condition that they also remember to pass it along (honor system, of course... I'm not tracking them down to check) so we continue to foster a more supportive community and culture among bikers in general. ;o)

I purchased or was given all my motorcycle gear before I even took my MSF course.
I did a lot of research for the kind of helmet I was looking for. I found a modular helmet that suited my needs at the time. It has been less than a year, and I am already looking to purchase a non modular full face helmet, because it should be lighter and quieter than a modular helmet. When looking for a helmet in your size, don't forget the shape of head for the helmet you are looking for.

In answer to the question of how much should you spend on a helmet, the best answer I've ever heard is how much is: "How much is your head worth?" As far as material goes in my opinion you need something that has fiber in it, like fiberglass or today carbon fiber. The molded plastic helmets don't have anything to hold them together if they crack. Keep the good stuff coming buddy.

LS2 helmets offer nice features for a bargain price. Last year I found an LS2 Stream model on sale for $65 (normal price about $110). It is DOT and ECE rated, removable, washable liner and cheek pads, pin lock ready visor, lever-actuated fold-down sun visor, vented, and full-faced. The stream is a long oval model, but LS2 offers other models that are round oval. They also have some nice high-end carbon fiber helmets. The stream is the most comfortable helmet I’ve ever owned and it looks good, too. I saw a nice modular LS2 at the Harley dealer in Abilene a few weeks ago.

Some modular helmets are homologated for use in the open position while others are not. New Zealand and Australia police officer ride with their chin bars in the raised position on city streets and lower them once in higher speed areas.

This is a topic that has exposed the value of a good ol' home town motorcycle shop with a collection of helmets one can try one in the store. I've ordered, and sent back so many helmet purchased on the internet. It seems that every manufacturer has a slightly different "fitting guide" and I've yet to find one I really like and find comfortable. I use a modular, only because it comes the closest (for me) in the compromises of comfort, convenience, (communication at the gas station AND toll booths) and safety.

Hello Kevin, thanks for the video. I have a light on the back of my helmet, it's removable. The light has a blue tooth module that I wired in. The module tells the light to light up if I use the brakes, or turn signal. It can also be set to a flashing pattern, which is what I use, seems to get better visibility. Don't know how anyone can ride a motorcycle without a helmet, yet I see it all the time. I also put on the helmet before getting on the motorcycle, because you can lose it just getting the thing upright and wind up head first into the pavement. I thought that your message with the little Honda was great. I guess haters have to hate, it's in their genetics!

I understand there are also systems that can light up the brake light or an auxiliary light when the rider rolls off the throttle and uses engine braking. I have seen the auxiliary lights fitted to the back of helmets, integrated into motorcycle jackets and as a separate item that can be attached to a backpack if that is what you ride with.

I advise riders buy helmet from a physical store, not on-line. Fit is critical and a store tech can help with proper pad placement. Sizes vary between manufacturers, so getting the right fit to your noggin can really only be done in a store where you have a variety of options to choose from. I probably spent 45 miutes with a tech when I bought my Shoei modular to get it right. BTW, one other advantage of a modular it is easier to work on, do pad adjustments and set up a communication system. I don't think the hinge on a modular really degrades structural integraty. If it does, I'd like to see the test data.

Thanks for that! I have to admit I'm guilty with that 1/2 helmet stuff, but the main thing I got out of this video is the sizing options. The back of my head is pretty flat, so a small is even kind of too big. I literally use about a size 6 ball cap. I have to cut those pesky one size fits all velcro straps in half. I'm going to take your advise to the bank and get me one of those molded type of helmet that is close to my head shape. And if I'm going to get me a better fit, I'll surely go for a full face while I'm at it. Keep it up!! Note: "not playing with a full deck, 98 cents short of a dollar, ... LOL! Nice ones!

I have both a full face and a modular. I got the modular last year because I wanted the ability to take a drink of water easier. I was dehydrating too much on longer rides and with the modular, I can flip up quickly at a stop sign or light and get some water. Waiting until I stopped for gas etc, was not providing me with the water intake that my body needed on hot 90+ days. A few headaches and 1 case of the shakes let me know that I needed to come up with a better plan for hydration. I do not want to use a back mounted system because I don’t want to land on it if I go down.

Kevin, I wear a full face helmet. However, I also ride with an inflatable motorcycle safety vest. If I leave the bike unexpectedly, the vest inflates, including a collar that stabilizes the helmet... I hope all my safety gear is a total waist of money and I never have to rely on them...

Well for my helmet, I purchased a Arai Regent-X
Helmet and it was 580 bucks it was more than I was thinking about spending, but I do not regret the purchase, and I must say it is a very comfortable helmet and it is supposed to be very good at protecting the noggin but luckily I have not tested. it’s functionality in that department yet. Hopefully I never will but because you never know, I was OK with spending that much on the helmet. Yeah the motorcycle cost me $3300. But I very OK with having expensive good helmet and riding a inexpensive motorcycle.

I have had many helmets from the basic HJC to expensive modular helmets. I settled with a LS2 valiant I ride a Electra Glide and no a full face is not part of the culture but the reason I made the choice is the LS2 is the only modular you can open all the way back so it doesn’t catch wind and the reason I have a modular is I also live in TX and it’s hot sometimes you can’t always stop on some roads and you need to stay hydrated on hot tx days so I got it so I can have a drink of water other than that it stays down but that ability to drink water is my reason for the choice. Now weather you should drink water while riding would be another argument for another video. I think that would make for a great video Kevin how important it is on these Hot days to stay hydrated and what are the options for riders to stay hydrated…

Hi Kevin I'm glad I watched your video on the RF 1400 as I'm also thinking of buying one. My head size is 85cm and all my helmets are mediums. You said you went a size up to a large. Was it the padding or was the shell size to small. I don't want to buy a large for it to feel loose after a while. Or not to be able to break in the medium. How is the helmet feeling after you've been using it. Should I keep with the medium. Thanks for the great topics.

Two years ago a friend called me to see if I could bring him a full face/modular helmet while he was on a long distance challenge. He'd run through a storm and his face took a hail beating because he refused to wait it out. I bought two helmets to ensure he'd have the correct size and I've been wearing the other myself ever since. It's not intentional but I ride in rain and wind quite often, having my modular helmet makes the wet crotch the only uncomfortable part of wet riding.
I now carry a leather sleeve that stores my extra face shields. It takes a few minutes at sundown to change to the clear and when I'm heading east in the morning putting on the mirror shield lessens the eye strain. Taking a few minutes beside a road or in a parking lot for safety may not be COOL, but I don't give a rat's hind end about your opinions of me as long as I am safe.
My Lady enjoys just being a passenger and now wears a modular happily. "being claustrophobic" was a bad excuse! She now enjoys the comfort in her dome and doesn't feel disconnected from the world which was another bad excuse.
You ALL are in my prayers

I just don't see the need for the drop down tinted visor. I need my shades after I take the helmet off anyway. I agree that the modular helmets are less robust at the chin guard hinge point.
