Thanks for this video, currently I'm looking to get into teaching overseas and looking for TEFL classes online! Thanks again for the video,it gave me a lot of information to look at.
Hi Zinatara, nice and detailed video, am currently working in UAE but planning to visit Vietnam shortly, am having a few questions on Vietnam where I would like your help, will it be possible to reach you through WhatsApp?
Hi Zina. My name is Zine from SA. I work in Qatar. I'm in the medical field. I came across this inspirational video of you while trying to help my daughter. She is 26 years old. I think you went in same institution. She just finished her course October 3. No she is looking for a job. She is very frustrated because we were under the that she was going to be placed immediately. Here she is no job. More frustrated because of the skin colour preference. 🤔 Thank you so very much for this video. You really doing a good job honey. May God bless you abundantly. Could you please contact me on WhatsApp sweetheart , +974 77984518. I would really like you to see how you can help my daughter. I can tell she will be very motivated again after talking to you. I forwarded your video to her. Her name is Anikwa. Stay blessed sweetheart. Don't ever loose focus.❤✌
5 months ago I watched this video at my boring office job in gloomy London and thought f*** it I need to get out of here and do something with my life. Now I'm in HCMC teaching English thanks in part from your inspiration...so thanks for that :D
This is really inspiring as I'm thinking the exact same. I just booked a month in Thailand with a group holiday to see how I find Asia. I hope after i visit Asia ill have the courage to go back and do TEFL.
Those who are offended by an honest discussion about race. And the problems caused by racism, should be ignored. Please continue to share your life stories.
@@martinherald6492 the core is, Asian don't think themselves are a "superior race". So, racism here is more based on social classes, differents in beliefs, cultures and some racist Asian don't show it on surface like some white supremacists. More "clever" and "covering well" than in Europe or North America.
@@martinherald6492 yeah and that just shows how retarded alot of them are to give more about status then your well being is beyond even ignorant at least white people know that melanin is good for them even if they hate black people.. its normal common sense and alot of them dont get normal common sense not even to be racist cause alot are not racist like some white people it does not make any sense haha
Teringventje Asian people understand that they are still behind European especially White on many fields, so in modern time, they don’t consider themselves “superior race”. What you say about China or Korea or Japan reflect more about their nationalism affected by Confucianist view of world and social orders.
As a Vietnamese American, I am sorry that you got discriminated against in Vietnam. It is important for some Vietnamese to realize that people of all ethnicities speak and teach English and at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is how well you teach.
I’ve been teaching in Vietnam for 4 years and I’m loving it, but yes discrimination and racism exist here and that’s just the way it is. I’m an US born Asian American whom speak And understand Vietnamese but I struggle to get a position when I first started. I get laid-off for being Asian and replaced by a Russian English speaker whose speak English with a heavy Russian accent. as long as you’re Caucasian it’s a lot easier to find a job. just don’t give up and keep on searching, not all school discriminate but mostly public school does. With all ends well, you did it Girl keep it on things will be even better once you’ve teach for more than 2 years. Good job...great honest video...
Sorry, but your English writing isn't what I'd expect from an American-born native speaker. Try editing what you wrote above. I worry about teachers of English who can't put together good sentences.
@@W8ASA I agree. As a native speaker, I can understand Dan's writing, but it is an absolute mess. Proof reading before posting is needed. I can't emphasize enough on laying a proper foundation with grammar. But perhaps conversational English is all a burgeoning Vietnam needs at the moment.
I am Vietnamese, and I hope you will have more things make you happy here and never mind about some bad things like racism in this country. Everywhere has good and bad sides either. I love your video, your honesty, I'm starting subcribing your channel, I wish you will have more amazing experiences and friends here ❤️
Thank you all for watching! I hope no one is offended or discouraged by my video! I'm just sharing my experience and I am aware that not all POC are treated in the way that I was. The past 5 months have been incredible and I honestly love living here in Vietnam.. P.s don't forget to hit that subscribe button for more videos ❤️
Z I N A T A R A I have a question... can you choose with what age you want to work or do you have no say in the matter? I prefer working with kids, I have no idea if I could handle teenagers and adults :O :D
Xandri Coetzee You could just apply for just kindergarten schools. I think it depends on the school but if you teach at a regular language centre, you'll probably teach all ages xx
This video was so informative and helpful. I for one am thankful for the honesty. I'm bi-racial (black/white) and honestly I do wonder if they can detect, lol, that I'm part African American will it affect me. But either way, I will stilly try and I'm really happy that you found a job inspite of that, you know. I also am really trying to figure out where people are getting these in-person TEFL certificates at? Like did you get yours there in Vietnam, or in London where you're from? I can't find any in-person classes where I live in the states. The only thing I've found in the states are the TEFL academy locations but those are only in a handful of states, none of which I live in. I'm just having difficulty trying to figure that part out. If you could make a video on that part of your journey and elaborate that would be awesome, or you could just respond lol, either way, thanks. And happy travels and teaching.
heatmopwho Hey, thanks so much for watching. A detailed video about my TEFL experience will be up on Sunday. Click the notification bell so you are notified as soon as it's up xx
For sure no one is offended. Currently I'm living and and teaching in Thailand. Almost the sqme here, especially for non native English speaker teachers. I for instance, am well qualified, but it's like, hello, how are you? Oh we want natives, sorry bye!
Yes you are right about racism in ESL world. Actually it is not only Vietnam but the whole ESL industry. Some people believe that the phrase "native speaker" actually means "white". I have seen some companies hire people from Ukraine, Latvia, Czech republic as "native teachers" but they won't consider people from Ghana/Nigeria to be "native".
Hi ,I am so sorry to hear about your story I am Vietnamese to hear that I feel so bad ,I hope your story will change many mind of Vietnamese people ,I have many wonderful black friends , I enjoy times talking .and drinking all good people.I hope you will stay in Vietnam and enjoy living in Vietnam and good luck
I graduate college in May and I think this is the next step for me! I've been watching many TEFL videos but did not see any POC let alone POC women! Thank you for this wonderful video!
Bryan from Pho Your Eyes Only discussed this as he's Vietnamse-Canadian. He had a tough time finding jobs because he didn't look the part, whereas his wife was white and got a good job.
That's an inferiority complex issue. When a person or a people view themselves as less than simply because of what thy are or where they're from or what they lack (money, education, material things, etc). It's sad really.
I admire your persistence and I am so happy on your success despite the (unnecessary) challenges and hurdles. You are instrumental in changing the perception that non Caucasian people are not "adequate" to teach English. You're opening doors and paving the way!
I have been a travel nurse for 3 years and have been wanting to try teaching abroad. Just wanted to say thank you for posting this video and inspiring me even more to try this.
Hi Zinatara, I will be moving to Hanoi in January to teach English. Are you aware of places that I can get hair care? My hair is locked and right now that's my biggest concern lol. Also are there fitness centers? To comment on the race issue, part of why I chose Asia is because of the color of my skin. Positive exposure is the best way to eliminate ignorance. The more people of African decent go to countries like Vietnam the better. Thank you for the video and keep up the great work :-)
Globetrotter5km Hi, thanks for watching. I live in Ho Chi Minh City so I don't know about much about Hanoi, unfortunately. Also, I do my own hair so it's not something I've really looked into out here. I know a few people usually travel to places like Thailand etc to get their hair done. All the best x
I'm planning on coming too in 2020 but through TEFL Academy. It has been really eye opening, I heard rumors once that Asians sometimes discriminate against Africans but it hasn't stopped my dream. At the end of the day it's about teaching English and making a difference. They might choose to appreciate it or not. That's entirely up to them.
I ran across your video and was truly inspired. I am in my 40’s and my children are grown. I am soooo bored with my job and I am looking to have an adventure and do something different. Thank you for posting this video, and giving me a glimmer of hope that I can now do this.
what an absolutely lovely personality and beautiful way of interpreting the "not-so-always-awesome" world around you.... ....keep on with the *shining *
I am so grateful for you video. My boyfriend and I are Jamaican and we are currently discussing getting the TEFL and I'm glad to see someone of similar complexion sharing her experience it's more relatable to me and I'm happy UA-cam recommended your video. Thank you so much for sharing ❤️
I'm considering teaching English in Spain or Vietnam for 15-20 hours per week. I appreciate your feedback! Great video! I hope employers don't discriminate against me, but at least I have your insight to help me understand.
Thanks so much for sharing, I'm considering teaching in Vietnam. I will def be emailing. I'm sorry that you had to encounter such ignorance but super happy you got a job you enjoy.
The way you have presented your case in this video is a perfect exemplary of : ‘degree is just a piece of paper’. You’re a true inspiration. Keep up the great work 👍🏻
Very informative and helpful. I'm from the Caribbean so these points are really worth considering. Being black with Caribbean-english accent I expect the process will be so much harder
I just found your videos and they are super helpful! I only just came off the academic conveyer belt at age 22 here in the UK and after 3 years of living by myself studying at Uni, I have to live within my parents house as I receive my degree in September. I don’t want to start a dead end job and try to afford a flat here in the uk I could probably barely afford. Luckily, I have always been interested in foreign language and different cultures as I made many polish, Lithuanian, French, Malaysian, Spanish and many more foreign people whilst in Bristol, UK. So, I recently found out that Thailand is a great place to afford to live and work as an English teacher. And similar to you, I have been hooked on the videos from people talking about living and working abroad. But now finding your video’s is making me interested in finding out about Vietnam instead. I will do some more digging in to the subject on teaching and living in Vietnam to base a decision between the two countries. Also, I just Subscribed! Peace and love and I wish you well - Harry.
well those center racist foward everyone except white , it call white fever in asia , heck even vietnamese american will have hard time geting a job cause they are not white ......
Thank you for sharing. Others have posted videos stating exactly what you've stated. I travel to SE Asia often for business, including Vietnam (HCM/Vung Tau) and understand what you are saying. The more I travel there, the more I like it. I realize I look different and use it as a learning and teaching opportunity. I have made some great friends there who have helped me. Please continue posting. Be blessed!
just look at a few of your videos but I realize that you have great experiences about our country for the detail, being the travel you've learned a lot of thing, rent an apartment your self, try to find your favorite job, you're right some of our school even don't have printer that you call technology bla-bla, in some of school just teaching grammar and no practicing speaking English as well, even English teacher may probably not speak E, We are really need some of people like you just a traveler or English couch go some of places and share some thing in English, that we all have a great chance to practice with the native or just a foreigner Thanks TARA
Congratulations on the contract! This is the first video of yours I've watched and I've immediately subscribed, I can already tell you're a really awesome teacher ^_^ I have been super nervous considering doing TEFL but this video has inspired me to take a step closer to taking the plunge! Thanks for sharing
Girl! NEVER allow anyone define you by race or gender! You are powerful, remember that, remind them too if they don't know, they best ask someone and stay blessed! I am looking at moving to New Zealand, keep shining and enjoy the journey!
You are so brave to face head on racism. You are great to stand up in the face of such horrible direct color of your skin kind of stuff. Well at least they told you what was going on. In the US racism is just hidden.
I know this is an old vlog....but I cant stress enough that this is me currently, I move to Thailand in less than 2 months. I'm so overwhelmed I have watched evey UA-cam and Thailand expats especially black expats, how to find a place to live cost of living, how to get around and how to pack which lead me to your videos. I have to say THIS vlog although not moving to Vietnam has pu me some what at ease. Thank you!💞💫
I'm about to do this as well I already planned my trip to Vietnam in June 2018 and will be on this crazy adventure. Thank you for making this video! I will have my in class TESOL/TEFL Certification as well I hopefully will be able to find something in Ho Chi Minh City your video made me a bit more confident. I don't have a Bachelor's Degree yet either.
Thank you for your honesty, and sharing your experience in such an open way. I am truly glad you are now teaching, and are happy living in Vietnam. I've just come across your channel and find it truly inspiring. Keep on with the videos girl. Love and support from London. Xx
I totally agree with you 100%. There's one youtuber currently in Vietnam that's actually giving misinformation about teaching and being a traveling youtuber. I really am grateful for her honesty.
Thank you so much for the information I just really love what you"re doing and I am planning on moving to Asia I haven't decided Thailand or Vietnam but just seeing your video has kind of leaned me more towards Vietnam because I'm going to teach to. I want to start by doing online teaching before I come there but it was nice to know your experience that I could actually get a job there so thanks again and maybe if I move to Vietnam we will get to meet! I also have a channel and I have done some traveling and I cook and do hair.
Thanks immensely for your authentic elucidation of your Vietnam english teaching expedition, blatant racism episodes, teaching procedures and process, in class temple course, salary, cost of living, and inexpensive foods, developing country and technology, rent. An interesting educational informative discourse. I have 17 years of teaching in the USA with a Special Education, B.S. degree. I would be interested in teaching abroad.
I honestly am so sorry that was your experience in Vietnam in regards too the colour of your skin. That makes my heart hurt❤️ I am glad I found your videos, it's so refreshing to get an HONEST experience. Thank you!!
I have a respect for you for not not giving up and continue to try and try. By the way, my suggestion, most Vietnamese have straight hair, so if you straighten your hair, it might look good on you. Don't worry about being black since people from the neighbor country, Campodia, have very dark skin (the sign of working hard in the rice field and darken by the sun, this is a respect of hard working, which is part of Vietnamese culture). I wish you luck and prosperous. Think of it as an experience for a better future!
Zina, you are beautiful and what an awesome attitude! I teach private lessons in Vung Tau, Vietnam. It's a struggle, but i live simply and I've been away from California since 05. Keep on keepin on! By the way, your voice is amazing too
Hey I saw your comment as rather recent. I'm currently in Bali teaching at a private school but the pay is just not enough.. less than 1000 USD per month and 45 hours a week. I'm not white so I expect difficulty in ahead but do you have any advice in citites.. whether Ha Noi vs hcm City or smaller coastal towns? Any info would be much appreciated!
Thanks for your info. I've been tossing around Vietnam. I'm coming from Long Beach, CA and been looking for ways to make a living out there. This helped a lot.
I lived in China for 3 years and in my first year there was a male POC in our teaching group. He quit after 6 months and went back to the U.S. because the racism was so bad. When people saw him in the streets they would literally run away from him or tell him to go back to America. East and Southeast Asia are really hardcore racist against POC. I've always wondered the reason. I know that light skin is traditionally a sign that you don't work the fields, whereas having a tan means you're a labourer, so maybe it has something to do with that. But still, you'd think people would be able to overlook that and treat people with human decency, instead of objects. I swear, that part of the world for all its wonders can be so incredibly backward!
Thank God you are one of the lucky ones. It's mainly because you still come from a native English speaking country. So, although with a pigmentation issue, it's easily overlooked.
Happy new year and cheers for your informative video about teaching in VN...nowadays i try to get my tefl online and i know that could be tough for me to teach cause i'm not a native English speaker so i came across your video and gave me some more information about teaching in this country....cheers about that...
U are so amazing and natural thank u for the video, it's very helpful and u are a strong woman that u don't give up. I'm sad to hear. That some people are still judging you because of your colour , you are an amazing woman, we love you
Zinatara, Vietnamese people DONT want their kids to learn English teaching by Vietnamese either. So Vietnamese, or Asians in general, will have very difficult time finding English teaching job. They will hire you before they hire Asians. Don't feel bad Zinatara, in Viet Nam only rich and very rich people are able to send their kids to learn English and they want their kids to learn English from the best, someone like Zinatara to teach their kids. During day time the kids have to go to their regular public school and English is a private school parents have to pay. I LOVE your videos!
really? Only rich and very rich? Oh, you are kidding me. It's common in medium class, too. You are misunderstanding it with sending kid overseas to learn English in foreign countries.
As a black person in the America typically they're not going to tell you that you didn't get the job because of your skin but I'm sure that there are plenty of us who have put in applications for jobs we even have statistics on name discrimination so that is a hindrance that we are used to. the ignorance of the Vietnamese or any of the group of people country people that feel like only white people speak English perfect English whether it's British or American that is in place purposefully. what could you possibly expect from them it's not their fault it's just that who do you see mostly on TV is white people a lot of times when you see black people on TV they might be speaking ebony phonics. and the stereotypes is what messes us up abroad what we have to do is go abroad and show people who we really are and not allow the dominant society to control our narrative. I would encourage teachers people going abroad carry videos of you conversing with your family your friends that are whatever color they are and allow your students to watch some of those videos so that they can wrap their head around this idea which is actually a reality.
Thank you, this was really informative! Your personality really shines through in your videos. Congrats on getting your full time contract!! So sorry to hear that you have experienced racism. As a mixed (half Indian and half English) girl I've definitely felt a bit anxious about this myself.
I love Vietnam i train MMA and teach BJJ Classes they pay Good, I spent 7 months I was having so much fun I went Riding all over Cambodia Thailand, I'll message u give u some Great ideas u might love, thinking of Comin Back next year Congrats Happy Birthday
I am 50 so its not only the 'wrong' color in Asia that cuts down on a fair go. I am baselessly age discriminated against ;-( I just flew into HCMC today. I want to try and get some pick up work without a contract. Any tips, pointers or help would be great.
Leeza Silverman Hmm I don't know anywhere in particular tbh. Usually you would at least have to sign a part time contract. Have a look on Facebook, Craigslist, or Daves ESL cafe.
Happy birthday! I turn 49 on 11 July (four days). Thank you for the video and information. If you came from UK, I understand there is a large climate difference - how well are you adapting to the heat? I may be in Vietnam in a couple months for the same reason (teaching English) and would like to know which city you're in and the main differences between Danang, HCMC and Hanoi (if you've been there long enough to find out). For a small holiday/trip/vacation, I recommend visiting Ha Long Bay - you are in for a breathtaking experience.
Paul Gianni Happpy Birthday! I hope you have an amazing day 🎉 I'm currently in HCMC and it's very hot lol. You do get used to it and there's Air con everywhere. I haven't been to Danang yet but I have been to Hanoi. In my opinion HCMC is hotter than Hanoi but I still prefer it here... I went to Ha Long Bay last month! It was absolutely beautiful 😍
Good video and glad you got the opportunity and made the best of it. Yes I have been abroad as well and know about the racism too. But consider those who have degrees and even Masters degrees in Edu and still get snubbed for interviews or after the interview. Knowing that you're highly qualified.even after you got your paper.
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. I traveled and taught in Thailand a few years ago and still I haven't done video lol..yours is so in depth and necessary. I have been thinking of travelling to Vietnam and I just don't know what to expect. I am sorry to hear about the racism discrimination you experienced too. That really hit home I went through that too in Thailand. Its so disheartening considering you just want to work. *Anyways I will be posting my teaching/travel vlogs soon (I am new to youtube). Feel free to check it out*
I came across his videos as well and he had my Durban accent from South Africa lol. Was excellent to find someone say his course is great, I will apply for it tomorrow. Thank you for video! (I'm from the same city as Alex but I'm not Caucasian so also a bit anxious about that as I heard about that aspect of teaching in Asia)
Good video! One GREAT resource for ESL teachers is Mark's English Grammar Shortcuts. Totally different from every other textbook. Saves miles of headaches.
I'm glad you addressed the racial issue. As you have noted, it is not set in stone as it was in 1955 Alabama. Asian racism is more of a "skin color preference". No one gets lynched and they even discriminate against their own people who are darker.
Shit. I'm here in HCMC and I was told that I was too dark. The same company asked me to recruit white South Africans because they don't know how to get into the South African market without getting black people. It was my first experience. Second experience was when the principal took a picture of me and sent it to the agent to find out why a dark teacher pitched up for their class. So I found a lovely place who hired me for the new school year. Let me know if you need contacts in Ho Chi Minh City. It will always be tough for us.
I have a couple questions. I'm an American and I want to teach English in Vietnam (probably Saigon). I love the culture, people and land of Vietnam, but I'm anticommunist and I hate their government. I realize I'll have to bite my tongue there about my political views. What I want to know is, are the schools there mostly private or mostly government controlled? Out of principle I'd like to be in a private school if possible. What are the pros and cons of government vs. private schools? Also, do we have to do some pledge to Ho Chi Minh or their communist flag each day?
Yes, you're right...bite your tongue and forget about politics. If not, you would be marked or accused as a criminal or spy against the goverment. It is not fun.
Thank you for your videos! They are so helpful. I particularly like them for your honesty and how you show your emotions. I love it that you are excited about your apartment, job, etc. I liked and subscribed! :)
Folks in the comment section repeatedly mentioned racism against black folks in Vietnam. IMO, I don't think it is a matter of racism but a matter of preference based on the Vietnamese standard of beauty and the presence of black folks in Vietnam. Vietnamese citizens, primarily women, equate beauty with the lightness of a person's skin color. The lighter the skin tone, the more attractive and appealing. We know this is absolutely untrue. The presence of black folks living in or traveling to Vietnam is extremely low. Therefore, interactions between the two races are very limited. Vietnamese citizens need exposure to black folks and their culture. They only learn about black folks through the media and the media often portrays black folks negatively. My brothers and sisters, you need to come to Vietnam and show Vietnamese citizens how beautiful you are! They need to know that black is beautiful.
I've been teaching in China for 9mths now and I'm really torn between resigning and just coming to Vietnam. I don't have a degree but it's super easy to get hired in China and the only thing holding me back about coming to Vietnam is that it might take me so long to get a job! I was worried about the money until I watched this video but seeing your apartment and knowing your salary! Seems like I could live exactly the same as I do here in China!
Anabellw0w Hey, salary amount is definitely not a problem for English teachers out here. However, it does take a while to get hired at a decent school/language centre! Some people find it easier than others but you definitely have to be prepared financially just in case.
Thanks for replying! There is one thing I am kinda curious about as well.. How could your school get you the working visa if a degree is needed? Is there something special they can do so that you don't need one?
Anabellw0w Hi, how did you manage to get a Z visa in China without a degree, if you don't mind me asking. I have a 3 year diploma from a university. But I've been told Chinese schools want a 4 year bachelors in order to organize a Z visa for me. thanks.
Well, most school's require it but others work their way around it! I'm not sure how/what they do but I have got my work permit now and I'm a non degree holder. I know a few other people that are in the same situation as me.
I have watched a few videos of people teaching English, your channel is great and has revealed a cracks in south east asia and their views of people from other nations. I really admire you for having the guts to go out there and turning things around...it is interesting that a boxer named Muhammad Ali refused to go to war in vietnam because he felt it was wrong to kill other brown people and lost the best years of his boxing life for his convictions...i will be in vietnam very soon...
I know you've left Vietnam but girlllll thank you so so much for sharing your experience! I'm from London and considering whether to move to Thailand or Vietnam. I'm more inclined to go Thailand because I feel like they are used to seeing Africans whereas I am a bit concerned about Vietnam and the racism. I'm not dealing with it lol. Imagine how dumb some people are, my English accent is considered posh to many lol but these imbeciles will judge based on my complexion. I'm glad you still travelled regardless and enjoyed your experience regardless of such foolishness.
Thanks for the love. I’d still do lots of research. That was the beginning of my 4/5 years there. I love Vietnam so much and I’m considering going back. Thailand doesn’t pay as well and I think the perks are also different. Definitely weigh up your options. Racism/ignorance in Asia exists everywhere unfortunately 😩 x
@@zinataraaa heyy girll ah thank you so much for the reply! I appreciate it. Ah really less pay. That isn't great then. I can also see the programme I am going to register with for Vietnam seems to be better. Thanks a lot! I will continue with the research before I head off.
I am of Vietnamese ethnicity but was born and raised in the UK. I obviously speak with a British accent but look Vietnamese. Would this hinder my chances in finding teaching jobs? I also have a BA degree and will be completing a 4 week in class TESL course soon. Thanks!
I like that you shared about racism. I experience the exact same thing here in China. Keep having to find new jobs because of my skin color. And some tell me out right that it's my color. It's like you have to prove something to them. And now i because of it I want to move ro Vietnam because they claim to not be racist.... but now I am wondering.
Thank you for this video, especially for being honest about discrimination. We need to hear more about how that plays out, and you are definitely contributing. I also like your "25" dance ; ) I know it's too lat, but I would have recommended Ko Tao for your birthday : )
This Video is 2 years old so it is even more difficult to get a job here without a degree. By law, a degree is required to teach in a Vietnamese school. When you work here without a degree expect to be really messed around.
Fantastic video; I'm looking to find out more about TEFL as I have 8 months left before returning to Uni. I cannot believe you had to experience someone saying you cannot teach because of your skin colour, it's shameful. You speak very clearly and that should be all they focus on.
Congratulations on your job. I was born in Vietnam and have visited periodically but am amazed that they are able to pay good salaries. I am a professor of English at the University in the States...and I remember visiting in the early days when Vietnam was so poor, it could only rely on volunteer teachers. Have a great time!
I'm black from Trinidad and raised in USA ... I've been asked many times to teach, but I refused the offers .. I'm married to a Vietnamese girl/woman and have children living in Da Nang... Maybe they prefer the black man over the black woman, I'm not sure ... I do however know the girls here have an obsession with being white...I chose to do investments rather than any time of salary or hourly work in Viet Nam ... My time I've lived in Da Nang have been incredible and haven't experienced any problems with my color ... I ride my bike around in the most rural areas of province Quang Nam and most people wave and say Hi to me.... Never had I had anyone deny me of anything I know of, however my wife being Vietnamese have had more discrimination because she's not the ghostly white they like girls to be in Viet Nam ... They have however because she's married to me, a foreigner have aired her three or four times now on TV ... Our investments are up over one million USA and still going ..
Hi, Zina. I'm one of those people who still believe that although a license is important, it should not be the END ALL BE ALL for anyone to teach especially language lessons. I wish you all the best! ;-)
I'm trying to decide between teaching in China and Vietnam. Which do you think is a better option? I'm looking for a balance between saving money and enjoying a good quality of life.
I rarely watch whole youtube videos, but I had to with yours. You're a natural and my God I could feel your charisma through the screen. Are you still there? How's everything going? Still good?

Thank you so very much for this video. You really doing a good job honey. May God bless you abundantly.
Could you please contact me on WhatsApp sweetheart , +974 77984518.
I would really like you to see how you can help my daughter. I can tell she will be very motivated again after talking to you. I forwarded your video to her.

5 months ago I watched this video at my boring office job in gloomy London and thought f*** it I need to get out of here and do something with my life. Now I'm in HCMC teaching English thanks in part from your inspiration...so thanks for that :D
Oh wow! That's actually so cool. Glad I inspired you :)
Rudy Visuals what was your first step? A year on are you still working in Vietnam? Was it a good choice?
This is really inspiring as I'm thinking the exact same. I just booked a month in Thailand with a group holiday to see how I find Asia. I hope after i visit Asia ill have the courage to go back and do TEFL.
Wonderful
Oh gosh hopefully this will be me too soon
Those who are offended by an honest discussion about race. And the problems caused by racism, should be ignored. Please continue to share your life stories.
Denise Smith Thanks for your lovely comment, I will ☺️
@@martinherald6492 the core is, Asian don't think themselves are a "superior race".
Teringventje you still don’t understand the reality here.
As a Vietnamese American, I am sorry that you got discriminated against in Vietnam. It is important for some Vietnamese to realize that people of all ethnicities speak and teach English and at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is how well you teach.
blacklight4 Thanks so much for your lovely message. I totally agree x
Speedy Gonzalez says the non black person bitching and complaining
blacklight4 what world we are living in very sad.
It's because education levels aren't great here. So people are still ignorant.
@sinnerandprejudice
Oh well
I’ve been teaching in Vietnam for 4 years and I’m loving it, but yes discrimination and racism exist here and that’s just the way it is.
Yea wtf lolol
@@W8ASA Wow! Sounds like some real White worshiping. Sheesh.
@@ellvtv2314 it's a comment on youtube, not the Wallstreet journal.....
Wow, you are brave or crazy like you stated. Just pack-up and came to a country and tried to make a living. Bravo to you!
Degree or not, you speak English better than I do and I have a Master's Degree.
Fred Azbell notice for her age range she doesn’t say “like” every few words. That in itself is refreshing.
@@donrainesoh lol!
Don't feel bad, they told me that the reason that they couldn't hire me because I am Vietnamese (born and raised in the US).
Bryan from Pho Your Eyes Only discussed this as he's Vietnamse-Canadian. He had a tough time finding jobs because he didn't look the part, whereas his wife was white and got a good job.
Doodah Gurl That's what inferiority complex is all about.
That's an inferiority complex issue. When a person or a people view themselves as less than simply because of what thy are or where they're from or what they lack (money, education, material things, etc). It's sad really.
@ TheSpd9548 did you end up getting a job in vn elsewhere? not at the particular place you applied?
@Tony Dinh became I am not white enough.
I admire your persistence and I am so happy on your success despite the (unnecessary) challenges and hurdles. You are instrumental in changing the perception that non Caucasian people are not "adequate" to teach English. You're opening doors and paving the way!
Marko Mendoza Thank you ❤️
I have been a travel nurse for 3 years and have been wanting to try teaching abroad. Just wanted to say thank you for posting this video and inspiring me even more to try this.
Amala K You’re welcome 😊
yasss girlll first black British tefl video ive seen xx
Didn't know they pay that good in VN !!! from what I see I think you're a great teacher !!!
Z I N A T A R A thanks :-)
I'm planning on coming too in 2020 but through TEFL Academy. It has been really eye opening, I heard rumors once that Asians sometimes discriminate against Africans but it hasn't stopped my dream. At the end of the day it's about teaching English and making a difference. They might choose to appreciate it or not. That's entirely up to them.
Hello. .are you in ventinam. ...am coming there next month..need to a little of it
Hello my sister. ..are you in ventinam. .
I ran across your video and was truly inspired. I am in my 40’s and my children are grown. I am soooo bored with my job and I am looking to have an adventure and do something different. Thank you for posting this video, and giving me a glimmer of hope that I can now do this.

I'm sorry that you had to encounter such ignorance but super happy you got a job you enjoy.
great video !!! I'm at Vietnam and I'm really enjoying this country
I Know you're a great teacher having a kind heart. You deserved all good things.
Paramoore Jorack That's so sweet, thanks ❤️
The racism really sucks...sorry you had to go through that. But as you say it's ignorance, but times are changing! Thanks for the awesome videos :)
well those center racist foward everyone except white , it call white fever in asia , heck even vietnamese american will have hard time geting a job cause they are not white ......
I'm sorry you had to go through that. However, I'm really happy that things ended up working out for you. You're lovely.
Thank you so much for sharing your story. But it's so sad that there is still discrimination based on skin colour. It's just wrong.
Girl that home looks gorgeous! Let me check and see if you did an apartment tour yet. :P
oh look like you did. I'm watching that next :D
Thank you for your honesty, and sharing your experience in such an open way. I am truly glad you are now teaching, and are happy living in Vietnam. I've just come across your channel and find it truly inspiring. Keep on with the videos girl. Love and support from London. Xx
This info is priceless. Thank you for posting.
I totally agree with you 100%. There's one youtuber currently in Vietnam that's actually giving misinformation about teaching and being a traveling youtuber. I really am grateful for her honesty.
Thank you so much for this video. I’m just starting my research on teaching abroad & this has helped me a lot.
So happy for you, I am currently in the process of planning how I'm going to make this happen! Excited and scared...
Good for you. Congratulations on your new job!
Thank you for the useful show.
It's good to see a real person tell of some real experiences
Have thought about teaching English abroad in Vietnam, what an amazing experience that would be
I love your honesty and passion! You are a beautiful woman! Kiaora from New Zealand
You are misunderstanding it with sending kid overseas to learn English in foreign countries.
rich or very rich? bruhhhhhhh nhà cấp 4 vẫn học VUS
Hi Zina. Thank you for sharing your experience. Its a big help for me tho. I will be moving in Vietnam this Feb 2020.
(I'm from the same city as Alex but I'm not Caucasian so also a bit anxious about that as I heard about that aspect of teaching in Asia)
diven algu I'm still here a year later lol. It worked out for the best 😊
I used to be taught by a French teacher and his pronunciation was very suck , somtimes i feel i can pronounce better than him Lol =))
Congrads on getting your full time contract.
Andrew Ward weird World Thanks Andrew :)
It is not fun.
same in thailand, their military junta govt. is a huggeeee turnoff.....
But I've been told Chinese schools want a 4 year bachelors in order to organize a Z visa for me. thanks.
Hi, I work in Vietnam and not China. I'm sure what the Chinese laws are sorry..
@@zinataraaa and you are right. Especially across South east Asia it's very common.
Your very brave and an absolute legend! Thank you for the inspiration 🙂
You sound genuine and lovely lady shame on people who not nice
I am of Vietnamese ethnicity but was born and raised in the UK. I obviously speak with a British accent but look Vietnamese. Would this hinder my chances in finding teaching jobs? I also have a BA degree and will be completing a 4 week in class TESL course soon. Thanks!
Julian Dang Apply for the bigger/well known Language centers like VUS and Apollo. They have lots of different campuses. You’ll be fine there 😊
You have such a beautiful accent and voice. Thanks for the information.
Thank you for this video! I've been looking into maybe moving to Vietnam to teach english. I just graduated from University with and English degree.
Thank you for this video, especially for being honest about discrimination. We need to hear more about how that plays out, and you are definitely contributing. I also like your "25" dance ; ) I know it's too lat, but I would have recommended Ko Tao for your birthday : )
I have SL parents too :) I just randomly decided to look up living in Vietnam, I just might go for it. The world is our oyster ❤️
A Musa GO FOR IT ❤️🙏🏾
This Video is 2 years old so it is even more difficult to get a job here without a degree.
Vietnam is developing .. Thank you :)
Modern technology should SHOW them that black people are in Africa, Europe and North America! So there's no excuse for their racism!!
Still good?
That was quite an informative piece. Thank you so much. You are a real darling. Well articulated... God bless you.
You sound like a great teacher 👩🏽🏫- very calming voice. Are you still there ?
