  • A midsummer treatment for Varroa mites is essential for beehive health. Formic Pro is ideal for use in strong hives with honey supers on.
[Fun Fact: like the Academy award-nominated film "1917", this was shot in a single take.]

I just added FP. I hope the way I added it will be okay. My hives are still insulated for winter. I did not pull them a part to add the FP. I put 2 FP on the top supers where there is brood and eggs. I am sure there is more in the deep and other supers below. Then I added a 2'" frame before putting the inner and outer covers on. I left the insulation since it is still in the 40's at night.
    Thanks!

    Hello,
I see in your video here that you mentioned that you have screened bottoms with your hives, as I do as well.
Prior to your full treatment of formic pro for varroa mites as shown in your video here, did you ever use a sticky board with just one formic pro pad on it (pre-treatment)?
I was told by a very experienced beekeeper to do this method instead because just doing a sticky board by itself for 24 - 48 hours could give you alot of false negatives.
I really like your video here and just wondering if you've ever done a pretreatment prior to a full treatment of Formic Pro.
    Thanks.
    Scott

      Scott,
We follow the manufacturer's instructions and generally just use two strips for 14 days. For a weaker hive, or in hotter temperatures, we'll use the single strip for 10 days twice.
Because we keep Russian stock and they usually have low mite levels, we leave the screened bottom boards open. We lose about 10% of the efficacy of the treatment but it seems to be enough. We've had good success treating once at the high summer and a second time around Labor Day.

      @@thehoneyexchange great, thank you.
I started the full treatment yesterday. Only a high of 80 yesterday with highs in the upper 70°'s for the rest of thes week. Thought the best time is now.
      I appreciate your reply back!

    Hello there,
After doing your first mite treatment shown in this video, once the treatment was fully completed how long did you wait to take the super off that you put on top of the hive for hive expansion during the treatment of Formic Pro?
    Thank-you!

After 14 days you can remove the pads, it's also okay to use while honey supers are on. It's the only approved one. And you want to use it while it's above 10c

@@JustinTurner000 Thank you for you insight on this. I will go ahead and remove the pads.
In regards to my super, it was only put on for hive expansion during the treatment. The Nectar/honey flow isn't as fulfilling now so I don't expect to see any build out of the super I put on two weeks ago but I'll know more when I open it up. I will have to wait and see at this time-frame.

@@soz8365 Since I don't know where you're located it would be better to ask someone near you about the current and anticipated nectar flow. In Portland (ME), the goldenrod just started blooming, along with some early knotweed and the end of the purple loosestrife nectar. On a big nectar flow like that, if there are sunny days for the bees to fly they can build and fill a medium honey super before the beginning of September. We pull supers, full or empty, between Labor day and September 20th.
      Hope that helps.

Thanks for info, how soon did you do second treatment. Do you check levels prior or just auto treat every July.

Sorry, I just discovered comments on the channel and realized I'm supposed to reply. We did a second treatment in the first week of September. I should do a better job of monitoring mites but the season was too busy and I treated proactively.

Hey 👋 so if I have 3 deep boxes of brood should I put 1 strip in each brood box? Or is that too much medicine? I’m just 🤔 not sure??? Let me know what you would do .Thanks friend !

    • @thehoneyexchange
      @thehoneyexchange  3 роки тому +1

When I have brood in three boxes I put one of the two strips on the lowest box and one on the second box. Two strips is one full treatment but this spreads it out a bit in the larger space.
      Hope that helps.
