Nice to see that you also cover the Vuelta. Your highlights are far ahead of the ones of german television. I am always looking forward to see your view on the stage.
Come on, german Sportschau TdF coverage was absolutely good. The Highlights were exceptional for german TV. You just can not compare it to LR because its a different target group. Just be happy that the TdF is shown from neutral start to finish with decent commentary (except Sprint Stages)
mountains wasnt awarded (according to wiki* & neither was combativity) just the three podiums for BMcN: stage, gc & points at 26 BMcN doesnt qualify for the young rider classification, so Mathias Vacek is in white BMcN has also put UAE on top of the team classification (i'm not sure they do a daily podium for that, it never gets shown on tv coverage until the final stage) *cross-checked with official site
5:46 WVA said in the post race interview that he rode his double disc wheels from the bus to the start during recon. By the time he got to the start he already realised it was way to windy for the double "disco volantes" today. Hence he did the recon as well as the race on a traditional setup. And as you mentioned, they indeed made weird choices on who to follow during the TV broadcast, not only for Vacek. Küng's TT wasn't broadcast for even a millisecond. I understand that you can't send a TV motorbike with every rider, especially when you need them minutes later to follow GC riders and other stage win candidates. But his start wasn't shown on TV and neither was his passage at T1, where he took the 4th split time. What does the TV director do: show us that information just with an info screen showing the split times. There wasn't a single helicopter shot of Küng and not even his finish was broadcast. Completely ignoring a possible TT winner, who is knówn as a notorious TT specialist, is completely beyond me.
It's actually amazing how UAE manages to keep their stacked roster happy. (Except for maybe ayuso). Being in Red but still just outright saying he'll work for the leaders speaks how McNulty is satisfied of how UAE is treating him.
McNulty has the look of a quintessential American character actor. I wouldn't be surprised to see him appear as a henchman in the big lebowski or a getaway driver in Heat.
@@blackpaint9093 Mathias' older brother Karel has been a GC hopeful, matching the likes of Remco a few years ago in junior ranks. He has stalled in the last few years though.
@@smetja i raced with Mathias competitevely and raced with Karel in training(who raced with remco in junior years). Mathias was a superior climber from my experience, even better TT abilities and excellent sprinter. He was lackluster only when it came to Endurance, in longer and harsher races he would often be nowhere to be seen, just to come back the day after and win, but didnt like long climbs and long stages. I raced with Antonio Tiberi and Andrea Piccolo too, both GC prospects, the latter right now banned for doping, but both of them despite often being beaten by Vacek(who in his second year as a junior, which was my first year, was almost guaranteed to win every single race he partook), despite that, both Piccolo and Tiberi were much more consistent in the long run, thanks also to the fact that they were smaller in size. In junior categories being bigger helps win you races, but that backfires among pros where being 170-180 is optimal, and 180 is a stretch. My first grand tour stage! thank you for reigniting my excitement for cycling with your content over the last few years, I'm so stoked that La Vuelta came to Lisbon this year, it was a blast to be in amongst it the last couple of days, most of my cycling knowledge I would say is thanks to these breakdowns

excellent review as ever - your reviews will be the only Vuelta I will see as I can watch no live cycling since Eurosport withdrew their (albeit rubbish) app and force me to watch via a TV channel. Keep up the good work
First time I've noticed Vacek. I am sure it won't be the last. He has a bright future in world tour cycling. Also, congrats to Brandon McNulty for the stage win. He's had a great year.
What am I missing for the car behind Vacek? Shouldn‘t the cars have to be minimum 25m behind the rider instead of 10m since this year according to the UCI?
Cian did a really good itt for being him 12 seconds faster than kuss and 3 after del toro on a course like this i was waiting like a minute gap for him
They don't want the tactics of a 21 stage race to be dictated by the first day. On a long TT Roglic could gain 2 or 3 minutes on some of the contenders. He would defend for three weeks and we would be bored.
NASCAR calls it tandem drafting or aero push when a car follows close enough to increase the speed of both cars. In aerodynamics, the air “anticipates” being parted by a moving object. The air starts to pile up out front and deviate before the vehicle. Thus a following vehicles air deviation or high pressure wave moves forward over the lead vehicle, lessening drag on that vehicle (if everything’s right, can also increase drag) and allowing both to go faster. So not only does the following rider gain some advantage from the air parted by the first, but the lead rider can theoretically also gain speed for a given wattage (power) input. This also happens in a stream or river when you have a big low pressure wave out in FRONT of a big obstruction like a rock and often fish sit in that pillow in front of the rock to get first dibs on food coming by. Air and water at these speeds are both incompressible fluids and act in a similar manner. It’s also why Jumbo’s helmets have a huge, odd looking forward spike in order to push the high pressure wave farther out, allowing the air to part sooner and inducing less drag when it reaches the less aero parts. Same with Lotus front forks, which are supposed to provide this “aero spike” effect for the very un-aero legs of a rider rather than the legs being the first to “see” the air. Hope that helps. Aerodynamics is both science and magic…and gets crazier and more capricious at supersonic speeds. That’s the best I have and stand ready to be corrected by those with better and perhaps more scientifically correct explanations! ☮️
