To me this song highlights his never ending battle with addiction. It's a battle that never ceases once it begins. We pick our poison and thus it begins. It's a battle we ultimately fight alone. Thinking we always have control but something inside knows you really don't. This song speaks of that journey and anyone who walks that path will understand it.

They're so good it gives people a warped idea of what MTV was like back in the day. It was 90% playing the same 5 pop hits of the day again and again with some rock played some nights. But they did these amazing Unplugged concerts and now many young people think, omg MTV was incredible back then! But on the whole it really wasn't and actually made the music industry more about image than music, way more than it was pre MTV. Generally speaking, MTV was not good for music. But AT LEAST they gave us Unplugged.

    SIDE NOTE:
Here is a little story about Layne that I thought his devoted fans would find interesting, possibly even touching.
In the Heart book Kicking and Dreaming, Ann Wilson revealed that Layne attended a party at her home around 1999. She said after most of the crowd left at night Layne was still there, and she wanted to go swimming so Layne followed her to the pool. Layne didn’t get in, but sat in a chair sipping a beer. He told her as a kid that he excelled at swimming, he said “I loved to dive into water.” He said the water felt like a whole other world. As Layne sat there and Ann was swimming, a huge meteor went over them and it lit up Layne’s face. She said he looked like a kid again, and at that moment there was no darkness in his life. Layne said, “Did you see that? How close do you think that was to us, Ann? Do you think that almost hit us, Ann? How lucky are we to have seen that?” Ann responded that it was beautiful, and Layne retorted, “Do you have any idea how rare it is for a meteor that big, and that bright, to come that close to us? We are really really lucky people Ann. You and me.”
Here is a link to these interesting Factoids in case anyone wants to check them out.

@@TheWalper If you haven't already i suggest checking out their stuff. They were labeled as "grunge " because they got popular around the time grunge got big( 1991) but are a bit more heavier and at the time I was a kid into rap music but as soon as I heard Alice in chains i became an instant fan. Songs to start with: (We die young, Bleed the freak, Man in the box, Them bones, Angry chair, Rooster, No excuse, i stay away) I chose mostly their biggest songs because that's what got me into them and then listening to the rest was like uncovering magic. Songs like the one in this video(nutshell)while amazing i think are appreciated more after you've become familiar with the band and know what frontman Layne Staley went through with addiction before passing away in 2002.

What you just witnessed was an artist near the end of his journey.. If you watch Layne's earlier performances.. he was a lot more lively and energetic... He had been weathered by years of heroin abuse at this point.. The gloves were to hide the tracks on his hands. This.. sadly... was not Layne Staley at his best.. and while it is an absolutely brilliant and haunting performance... The words he sang were literally his torture. Fills my heart with as much pain as it does joy to watch this video. RIP Layne Staley.. You are missed by many!

Layne died in such a horrible way, needle in his leg sitting up on his couch. Wasn’t found for 2 weeks. AIC bass player Mike Starr saw Layne last in the apartment he ended up dying in, they argued about Layne’s drug addiction and Mike got pissed off, Layne asked him as he was walking out the door to please not leave, Mike left any way and Layne ended up od’ing and died. It fucked with Mike really bad the rest of his life, all the way up until he too died from a drug overdose.

The friends don't let friends get haircuts was a slight to Metallica from my understanding. I didn't know that two of their members had OD'd. I just had a friend OD on heroin last week. we didn't see each other much anymore but we grew up together and she had such a sweet soul but had been through sexual trama and all sorts of things in her life. I live in North Alabama, there is an episode of intervention about where I live in title they call it magic mountain but about seven years ago heroin made a comeback for the first time since the 70s and now people are dropping like flies. If anyone reads this and needs help please see the treatment you need and deserve before it's too late.

Layne and Kurt barely crossed paths but everyone in their circles say that they are very similar people. Very sensitive, with a heart for the underdog, biting hilarious sense of humor, courageously vulnerable and honest, dark and self destructive. It's too bad they couldn't have known each other and helped one another I'm their lifetimes. I had this idea of a painting of them hugging and crying in heaven that would be very powerful I think.

Only way to get to heaven is thru Jesus Christ. I hope the two of them called out to the Lord for forgiveness. He was not "near death". He lived another 6 years. Don't get me wrong, he was definitely deteriorating - but he wasn't dying. Back in 1996, we hadn't seen Layne/AiC perform in over 2 years. At the time, we THOUGHT this unplugged show was AiC making a comeback. We did NOT think it was some kind of "farewell show"... Ultimately, that's what it turned out to be - but we didn't realize it at the time. Looking back, it makes the unplugged show absolutely amazing - but it took hindsight for that to become apparent.

While it probably contributed, your accusation isn’t entirely true. You’d first need to know what Sludge Factory is about and then know who was sitting nearby taking in the performance. It’s said he may have been a bit nervous blasting his record execs to their faces. He really didn’t blow many other lyrics the rest of the show. Minor misstep in Got Me Wrong, can’t think of another off the top of my head (and he tore that song up misstep aside). Just some extra bit of info the bass guitarist of Alice in Chains Mike Inez, has this written on his bass guitar during this show - "Friends Don't Let Friends Get Friends Haircuts...". He and the band wanted to express disappointment about the fact that All 4 band members of Metallica got their haircut short. Long hair was and still is an unspoken symbol of metal music. So incredibly heart wrenching. Layne had the demons sitting with the him.on that stage. As if telling him, dude give the performance of your life, because we will be taking over your life. Such a talented guy. The really awful thing is the demons we carry in our lives just sit waiting patiently to ruin us at every chance they get. It's so sad that Layne's demons took him way too early. After all these years his voice remains one of the most eccentric voices on the airwaves. Hope wherever Layne is now, he can finally see what a talented man he is. He'll never be forgotten.

As to your comments about Layne, and how he just came out on stage in sunglasses, sat down, kept it simple and sang the song.
He was pretty much an introvert.
Often times he would spend alone in his apartment shooting up, going into a dark place of despair, and then put it all his thoughts and feelings on paper.
Then he would just show up to band practice, lay down the lyrics until it was a song and then go off by himself and get lost in the world of drugs and self isolation.
It’s rough to say, but that’s what most people who are addicted to heroin do. They Shut out the world.
It’s too bad he paid the price with his life before he could get his shit together.
Thank God we still have his music.
