That was the malediction of 2nd european in World Cup :
1982 : Germany --> 1984 : first round
1986 : France ---> 1988: not qualified
1990 : Italy ----> 1992 : not qualifed
1994 : Sweden ----> 1996 :not qualified (with 16 teams)
1998 : Croatia -----> 2000 : not qualified
2002 : Germany ----> 2004 : first round
2006 : France ----> 2008 : first round
2010 : Netherlands ---> 2012 : first round
2014 : Netherlands ----> 2016 : not qualified (with 24 teams !)
Croatia is the first second european in world cup since 1982 to qualify and pass the first round of next Euro but it has been all buy easy.

I would say that they were probably Europe's top team from 1986 - 1988.
They would have deserved to win Euro 88.
The USSR / Belgium game at the 1986 WC quarter finals only ended in a Belgium victory because the refs were against USSR

Ich finde, dass diese EM- Qualifikationsgruppe eine der Kuriosesten überhaupt war. Frankreich als Favorit enttäuschte auf der ganzen Linie.
Die DDR gewann auf Island 6:0, UdSSR als Tabellenführer nur 1:1 auf Island, dafür 2:0 Sieg in Paris gegen Frankreich. Unglaubliche Konstellation!

La RDA, jamais mauvaise, mais ne se qualifié jamais, curieusement.
J'avais 9 ans en 1986 et j'avais découvert le football lors de la Coupe du Monde de cette année. Je ne sais pas pourquoi, je garde le souvenir, dans ces qualifications, d'une longue nuit qui n'en finit pas. Les matchs à la télé étaient rares à l'époque, chaque match de l'équipe de France était attendu (un à chaque fois, pas deux ou trois en dix jours comme on a déjà aujourd'hui) et c'était triste, désespérant. Les anciens avaient l'impression d'être revenus dans les années 70, ceux de mon âge n'avaient jamais vu l'équipe de France en difficultés. Face aux Islandais amateurs et les deux matchs face aux Norvégiens qui devaient l'être aussi, un terrible sentiment d'impuissance.

Warum absolvierte Platini noch einige Spiele in der EM-Qualifikation und hörte dann auf ? Meines Wissens übernahm er dann sofort das Traineramt der Franzosen.

Wer weiß warum Michel Platini die ersten Spiele der Qualifikation 1988 absolvierte und dann ausschied? Er versuchte sich dann sofort als Nationalcoach !? Eigentlich ein ungewöhnliches Vorgehen.

Ah oui, très forte cette équipe. Zavarov, Belonov, Aleinikov, Protassov, Rats....la plupart des joueurs étaient du Dynamo Kiev qui avait remporté la C2 en 86. Kiev- Atletico 3-0.

l'équipe de france est resté 10ans dans le vide un euro 92 décevant pas qualifié pour là coupe du monde 1990 ni celle de 1994 le déclic vien à l'euro 96 quand l'équipe de france ce sépare de la génération cantona, ginola, boli, papin, mozer et j'en passe mais ont doit admettre que l'équipe de france est restée 10ans dans le vide de 1986 à 1996.

Simples o tele Santana levou a seleção envelhecida de 82 houve poucas renovações levou Muller campeão mundial sub-20, Casagrande que foi mal nos dois jogos e Edson boaro, que substituiu o lateral Leandro que foi cortado junto com Renato gaúcho e depois colocou o Josimar que deu a conta do Recado no lugar de Edson , Tinha também o futuro campeão mundial de 94 o Branco que jogou demais em 86 e Zico que ficou basicamente na reserva e e entrou no jogo da França em que ele perdeu o pênalti que botaria o Brasil na semifinal por isso que não deu liga mesmo que sofreu 1 gol

@@joserachidmaluffilhomaluff8090pois é o Renato gaúcho foi cortado por causa da indisciplina e o Leandro tomou as dores do Renato preferindo não ir pra copa o careca não quis bater o pênalti deu para o Zico bater e o goleiro Joel bats defendeu no tempo normal o Júlio Cesar e o Sócrates nas cobranças de pênaltis perderam as suas cobranças foi o jogo atípico porém a França teve mais paciência do que o Brasil

@tomasjurogutierrez2294 Technically they didn't qualify for the finals (when four teams took part), but they did reach the quarter-finals after negotiating the first qualifying group. France bombed in the qualifying group for 1988.

Lobanovsky li faceva giocare ad una velocita' doppia, atleticamente superiori. gli anni iniziavano a farsi sentire. Quei giocatori erano una generazione al tramonto, in quelle qualificazioni successe alla Francia cio' che successe all Italia 4 anni prima, non ci fu il ricambio generazionale a chi per motivi anagrafici a chi per motivi atletici non riusciva piu' a dare il 100% alla Francia.
