Daoism: An Appeal to Nature

  • The thought of the ancient Daoist sages, Laozi and Zhuangzi, is at times dismissed by philosophers as nothing more than an appeal to nature. Throughout the video, I explore why Daoism does not fall victim to the appeal to nature fallacy. Through the concepts of wuwei and ziran, Daoism provides an reasonable argument as to why their conception of 'natural' is beneficial.

Yo, no wonder you were quick at picking up on differences about Chinese Philosophy. Just clicked on this channel to find another fellow philosophy UA-camr, really like the atmosphere you have created with darkness and ambient background music. Keep up the good work bruh.

The core understanding of 道家daoism is to understand that it’s not about dao it’s about nature 人法地地法天天法道道法自然 Human follows earth earth the heaven heaven the way and way it’s nature ... u can cut it down to 人法自然 human follows nature and that u can cut down to 自然而然 nature develops out of its self and therefore Wuwei ist not the opposite of ziran , Wuwei is in it’s nature ziran . It’s not about be or not to be , it’s not be is be :) but thank you for your video

Thanks for watching the video and the comment! However, I don't believe that I suggested that wuwei [無為] and ziran [自然] were opposites but rather 'two sides of the same coin.' Ziran, being 'that which is so of itself' or 'naturally,' and wuwei, being 'non-action' or 'without interference,' both mean the same thing. Only that wuwei gets to the 'natural' through a negation of wei [為] or 'action/effort/interference,' which is why it is often used in advising humanity which is so obsessed with 'effort.' When one practices 'non-action,' they are doing what comes 'naturally.' This is why throughout the video I reference both concepts in the Daoist emphasis on 'nature' or the 'natural.' I apologize if the phrasing I used in the video did not make the association between the two clear.

Ian Withy-Berry sorry! Don’t need to apologize for anything! I am German and maybe it always sounds a bit hard when a German is trying to make his point in English . All in all a good video !

Do you have any recommendations on books to start off with when studying Daoism?

Yea! In the days of yore, I would have probably just said the Daodejing but I've since realized that your understanding of the Daodejing is deeply framed by the translation, introduction, and translator. The text is, probably intentionally, really enigmatic. So let me suggest give a frame of reference first by distinguishing between three "Daoisms" so as to help illuminate your possible journey into studying Daoism. (I'll likely make a video about this some time in the future so I'll keep it brief here.)
First, there is the "Daoism" I talk about here, commonly referred to as "Daoist philosophy" or "Pre-Qin Daoism." It is constituted primarily of the Daodejing (also known as the Laozi) as interpreted by Wang Bi (3rd century CE) and the Zhuangzi as interpreted by Guo Xiang (also 3rd century CE). To get into that, I'd honestly recommend just jumping into the Zhuangzi. Brook Ziporyn's translation is the most recent and from what I can tell right now, a really solid version.
Second, there is the "Daoism" that is popular all throughout the internet, which has been called "Western Daoism" or "American Daoism" at times, although it isn't exactly an organized movement or scholarly field. It is a recent (like 1970s) Western romanticized interpretation of the "Daoism" directly above. Its central works include the Tao of Pooh, Stephen Mitchell's Tao te Ching, and some others that are evading my mind. It isn't so much a study as an artistic interpretation of "Daoist" texts. Lots of people have problems with it. I, for the most part (excluding Mitchell), don't mind much.
Third, there is the "Daoism" of the Daoist religious tradition that has been organized for nearly two millennia (at least). It has gotten a lot of flack from Western scholars and so the study of it in the West has really just picked up in the last half-century. Of the three "Daoisms," I'd say this one has the best claim to the name of "Daoism," but I'm not one to get really nit-picky. The Daodejing and Zhuangzi are also fundamental to this tradition, although interpreted through a different lens from that of "Daoist philosophy." Probably, the best place to begin with the Daoist tradition is either the late Kristofer Schipper's book The Taoist Body (Schipper's work on the Daoist canon revolutionized the field) or most anything by Livia Kohn.
I should have some good stuff on this channel about the Daodejing and its reception by the summer that can help elucidate some of its mystery. Whatever your interests are in, I hope this helped. And good luck with your studies!

this is an is/ought problem ; there is nothing TO prove ; nature IS , regardless of what man says something OUGHT to be ; i do appreciate ur mention of commercialism non-stop profiting from and promoting ignorance , this honestly cannot be overstated until whence the majority of our species are no longer the ignorant masses

really funny adverts though, but your right, some of the supposed natural ingrediants have their own toxic properties. As always `the dose makes the poison`

The modern person is educated into bureaucratic thinking. If you're looking for guidance, go to x or y expert. While none of the experts can teach you anything core and meaningful. It's like the film ikiru where the ladies are trying to get something fixed in their community, and get the run around being told another department covers that, not them. They finally get recommended to the original place they went before giving up. Worthwhile knowledge doesn't exist in academia, only things trying to be useful and appearing useful. The long list of fallacies are a result of this, everything has to be stamped and labeled.

    Louzi Zhuangzi for people's benefit.
    What is nature?
Your outside spring and summer nature?
Or Nature of your Eternal Completed Life?
When you are awakened by I of you
then you so naturally notice that whole world and everything is the expression of I.
    So named Tao.
Tao is Moses' God definition, the I am that I am.
Tao is also Tathagata, 自法燈明, I phenomena Enlightened.
When any people know everything about Tao but he do not know himself then he know nothing about Tao.
Laozi Zhuangzi come from I Ching, Whole Awakened, 周易 of 圓覺.
    周 is 圓 and 易 is 覺.
易 is the image of the sun and that anything can't be, the neti neti so yes yes.
Which is the same in Thomas gospel's 2,
When he become troubled completely then he will be astonished.
So he will rule all revive whole.
When you say Tao is, the can't be said, that's good.
When you say Tao is, the whatever said, that's also very good!
Don't be fool by the wrong Louzi's
    Have nice day.
