  • James Kalm has been documenting the exhibitions of Katherine Bradford on UA-cam for fifteen years. During that time, viewers have watched as her recognition and reputation has become international. On April 17, 2021, a brisk early spring evening, half an hour after closing time, Canada’s Phil Grauer accommodated an “un-masked” walkthrough of Katherine’s latest show “Mother Paintings”. On this gracious stroll, Bradford chats about her artistic musings, the role of mothers during the pandemic, and paint-head trivia. This latest selection of paintings has been called “masterful” and the artist’s close descriptions and explanations of both technical and aesthetical decisions are insightful. A musical intro is provided by Kid Krill, and was recorded on Bedford Avenue, Williamsburg Brooklyn. This program was recorded April 17, 2021. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

Love that she can talk in practical language and describe her thoughts that form such abstract beauty. So fluent.

Thank you Katherine, Kate and James! Very nice work. Very nice artist.
Katherine has been around many blocks: she is almost 80 years old, raised two highly successful children, lived her life with two partners (separate times) and paid her dues in the art world. Age and experience and much study has raised her work to a high level of accomplishment. She relates to modern painters on back to Matisse, Motherwell and Diebenkorn but especially Marsden Hartley and others from the New England past. There is a great expressive quality with both muted/greyed and bright raw colors, and yet a stern held back aspect. She trusts her gut intuitive direction but she has the time of practice under her belt. She knows what she is doing.

To me, the eye-popping painting, 'Upsetting Times', embodies a current evolution of Piet Mondrian.
Keep up your fantastic, educational, & needed work, James.

The wonderful Kathy Bradford is in the house. Thank you James and Kate for covering this.
Love the way you guys have that relaxed teasing, that only old friends can do
The pallete appears quieter, more tonal than previous works. Less obvious use of primary fluorescent colour, perhaps the reflective times we're living through
    Rose Wylie please!
    Greetings from lockdown France.

Great work, Kathy. I love color in these paintings. I am the proud owner of two of your smaller paintings and treasure them. It happens that I'll be in NYC and will make an appointment with CANADA to see your show on April 30 after I visit the Whitney to see Julie Mehretu's retrospective. All the best! Phil

OMG Kathy Bradford!!!! Excuse me for being so excited but she is just the best and one of my favorite artists. No, my favorite. I hope to see one of her paintings in person one day. I’m so glad she is being recognized as one of the greats because she deserves all the praise bestowed on her. I can picture her in her studio, brush in hand AND JUST PAINTING. What color and composition and feeling. If people aren’t grabbing up her paintings they are missing out. She is my inspiration and I hope one day to be able to express the freedom in my work that I see in hers. Sorry for rambling on but I did say I was excited. I will watch this many more times. Thank you Kathy Bradford and thank you James. 😊❤️ Thank you Kate.

Fantastic paintings, all in such refreshing color combinations, some of them look the way sporting goods stores smell. And love what she says about the people being the landscapes, reminds me of what Stanley Whitney said about realizing that the space is IN the color.

Loved Katherine and her paintings...not crazy about the interviewer. He seemed to not know how to ask the right questions...And his audio was much louder so it was hard to hear Katherine quite a bit of the time. Still, I learned so much and will continue to follow Ms. Bradford's work.

Underwhelming. If the goal is to make people cry like an opera (as she said) there is a LONNNNG way to go. The only thing propping these up is the pretentiousness of the NYC gallery scene.
